                                        To teach in a Tasmanian school, you must be:

                                        a) fully registered; or
                                        b) provisionally registered; or
                                        c) the holder of a limited authority; or
                                        d) under the direct supervision of a registered teacher.

                                       Like other professions occupying positions of trust and responsibility within the
                                       community, teachers are required to be registered in order to practice their profession.

                                       Our registration processes ensure that all teachers in Tasmanian classrooms:

                                             have appropriate teaching qualifications & are competent;

                                             are of good character;

                                             are fit to teach;

                                             are proficient in the English language;

                                             observe a code of professional ethics; and

                                              and competence.

                                       What is Provisional Registration?

                                       Provisional registration:

                                         is similar to an induction period; it gives you time to consolidate your teaching
                                          practice and to apply and develop professional knowledge, values and relationships
                                         forms part of the continuum of ongoing development from pre-service education to
                                          career-long learning.

                                        All teacher education graduates who meet registration requirements are granted
                                        provisional registration for a period of time, while they gain experience.

                                       How long can I hold provisional registration?

                                       You can hold provisional registration for up to five years.

                                       You can apply for full registration at any time during this five year period, once you have
                                       met the requirements, by demonstrating that:

                                         your teaching practice meets the Competence Standard (in the Tasmanian
                                          Professional Teaching Standards Framework ;

                                         you have been teaching for a minimum of 185 FTE days, i.e., the equivalent of one
                                          full-time year of teaching;

                                         you meet the requirements of a good character check; and

                                         you meet any additional conditions which might have been attached to your
                                          provisional registration, for example for proof of English language proficiency or
                                          the need to upgrade qualifications.

                                       The forms and supporting material are on our website.

                                                         If you apply for before October 2010, your application will be
                                                         completed on the application form.

                                                         It can be lodged, along with your payment, at any Service Tasmania
                                                         shop, or alternatively, you can mail it directly to the TRB.


                                                         If you apply from October 2010 onwards, your application will be
                                                         completed online at www.trb.tas.gov.au

                                       How do I apply for registration?
                                       Before your application can be processed, you need to:

                                         pay the application + annual registration fee.

                                                   Application fee of $45.00 +                      2 years       $213.00

                                       A Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) can enable a person, who is not a qualified teacher,

                                       in the supply of relief teachers in the second half of the year.

                                       Important things to know about a LAT

                                                An employer is responsible for initiating a LAT application.


                                       Step 1      The employer will complete their section of the application and then forward
                                                   the form to you to complete.


                                       Step 2      You complete the ‘Prospective Employee Section’ and submit the form to the
                                                   TRB, along with your payment of $129.00.



                                                                Allow for up to 4 weeks for processing.

                                       Important things to know about a LAT

                                            A LAT is only ever granted for one calendar year.


                                            A Generic Relief LAT is a temporary measure available for students in their
                                            final year.


                                            Once you are registered as a teacher, your cannot apply for a LAT.




                                                    If you have a LAT, you will still need to apply for registration
                                                    when you have completed all of your course requirements.

                                       Under Mutual Recognition, your Tasmanian Teacher Registration will give you reciprocal
                                       registration rights in most other states and in New Zealand.
