Keep our planet clean and green

POLLUTION

INDRODUCTION: Pollution is when water, air or

land becomes very dirty. Pollution can come in

4 different types effecting different types of

areas in the world. Air pollution affects the air,

water pollution affects the water and marine

life, land pollution affects the land destroying

life and the environment and there is also noise

pollution that can affect our hearing. We all

contribute to pollution in some way or another.

Whether it is with a large amount or small

amount we can still cause major damage to our

health and the environment.

Although we all contribute to help stop the

increase of pollution very little people realize

that pollution is very harmful because they

don't think of the environment, themselves and

other people and what it can do. Pollution is an

important factor to our lives. It involves our

society and all other animals. Pollution is

gradually destroying our planet and is gradually

killing ourselves too. Like air pollution, smog

and acid rain is a killer to all of us. It destroys

marine life, our own health and destroys

historical monuments and statues.

DEFINITION: Pollution is an undesirable state of the

natural environment being contaminated with harmful

substances as a consequence of human activities.

Different types of pollution: Chosen two types of

pollution are:

LAND pollution and WATER Pollution

SUB TITLE: WATER

 Definition: When toxic substances enter lakes,

streams, rivers, oceans, and other water bodies, they

get dissolved or lie suspended in water or get

deposited on the bed. This results in the pollution of

water.

Causes:

 Marine dumping- Dumping of litter in the sea.

 -Industrial waste- Industry is a huge source of water pollution, it

produces pollutants that are extremely harmful to people and the

environment.

 -Radioactive waste- Nuclear waste is produced from industrial,

medical and scientific processes that use radioactive material.

Nuclear waste can have detrimental effects on marine habitats.

 -Oil pollution- Oceans are polluted by oil on a daily basis from oil

spills, routine shipping, run-offs and dumping.

 -Underground Storage Leakages- A tank or piping network that has

at least 10 percent of its volume underground is known as an

underground storage tank (UST). They often store substances

such as petroleum, that are harmful to the surrounding

environment should it become contaminated.

 -Atmospheric deposition- Atmospheric deposition is the pollution of

water caused by air pollution.

 -Global warming- An increase in water temperature can result in

the death of many aquatic organisms and disrupt many marine

habitats.

Effects: The effects of water pollution are not only devastating to

people but also to animals, fish, and birds. Polluted water is

unsuitable for drinking, recreation, agriculture, and industry. It

diminishes the aesthetic quality of lakes and rivers. More seriously,

contaminated water destroys aquatic life and reduces its

reproductive ability. Eventually, it is a hazard to human health.

Nobody can escape the effects of water pollution.

Control methods: The individual and the community can help

minimize water pollution. By simple housekeeping and

management practices the amount of waste generated can be

minimized.

 Oil goes inside the duck's wings preventing it from flapping it.

SUB TITLE: LAND POLLUTION

 DEFINITION: Land pollution basically is about

contaminating the land surface of the Earth through

dumping urban waste matter indiscriminately, dumping of

industrial waste, mineral exploitation, and misusing the soil

by harmful agricultural practices.

 CAUSES:

 Wastes from Agriculture: This comprises of waste matter

produced by crop, animal manure, and farm residues.

Wastes from Mining: Piles of coal refuse and heaps of slag.

Wastes from Industries: Industrial waste matter that can cause

land pollution can include paints, chemicals, and so on.

Solids from Sewage Treatment: Wastes that are left over after

sewage has been treated, biomass sludge, and settled solids.

Ashes: The residual matter that remains after solid fuels are

burned.

Garbage: This comprises of waste matter from food that are

decomposable and other waste matter that are not decomposable

such as glass, metal, cloth, plastic, wood, paper, and so on.

EFFECTS:

 The effects of land pollution are far-ranging in the

industrial age. The nature of the industrial revolution

and the lack of a sustainable development model for

industrial progress have allowed the creation of

chemicals and products which may serve the idea of

convenience or productivity or efficiency, however, the

concept of environmental stewardship is largely an

afterthought. This has led to long-lasting chemicals

which persist in the environment and are potentially

toxic to life.

 Don’t let it become like this
