Mobile Search: Where It’s At
We’ve spoken about mobile search before, and especially with an upcoming holiday season next
month, there’s never been a better time for mobile advertising. But just how powerful is mobile
search becoming? I read an article recently that outlined some key take-aways from the mobile
search argument.
Mobile Ad Revenue will top $1Billion for the first time in 2011. According to emarketer.com,
Spending on mobile advertising—long a bit player in the digital media mix—will top $1 billion
in the US for the first time this year as smartphone adoption and rising mobile internet usage
have made the market more attractive to advertisers.
Advertisers will spend nearly $1.23 billion on mobile advertising this year in the US, up from
$743 million last year, according to a new forecast by eMarketer. By 2015, the US mobile
advertising market is set to reach almost $4.4 billion. This includes spending on display ads
(such as banners, rich media and video), search and messaging-based advertising, and covers ads
viewed on both mobile phones and tablets.
In perhaps the most exciting report I’ve seen this year, The Mobile Movement, explains some
key findings:
89% of folks use their smartphone throughout the day, and get this: 93% use it at home,
compared with 87% on the go.
When it comes to how they are using it, 81% browsed the internet, while 77% used
mobile search
77% of smartphone users mostly visit search engine sites, compared to 65% visiting
social media sites
95% of smartphone users have used their smartphone to look for local information
The last bullet point is key. With the upcoming holiday shopping season and folks doing more
and more mobile search, it’s going to be a great, great season for advertisers based on the
number of users looking for local deals, local eateries, movie times, etc. Of holiday shoppers
that are smartphone users, 80% used their device to research or shop while in a store.
Mobile search is taking off and if it’s already ahead of social media, imagine whats in store for
this generation of multi-taskers… The possibilities are limitless. Like we say here at SeedCorn,
the seed has been planted. Let’s watch it grow.
