DOE OFFICE OF SCIENCE CONFERENCE SPONSORSHIP
QUESTIONNAIRE
1. Conference Organizer and Contact Information: Martha Condon (510) 486-7135
2. Title of the conference and a one paragraph analysis of how holding this conference
supports the Office of Science missions within your organization.
Title of conference: Beam Instrumentation Workshop 2008 (BIW’08)
The Beam Instrumentation Workshop (BIW) is an international periodic workshop held
every two years dedicated to beam diagnostic and instrumentation for charged particle
accelerators and beam transport lines. The workshop focuses on design principles and
engineering issues associated with a wide variety of equipment and measurement
techniques. The BIW, now at its 13th edition, is typically hosted by DOE-funded national
laboratories or universities. Previous hosts include among others, BNL, SLAC, Fermilab,
ANL, ORNL. The workshop offers both formal presentations and informal discussions
to promote the exchange of ideas and issues. Tutorial sessions serve as an introduction to
relevant topics. Beam diagnostics and instrumentation are fundamental systems for the
operation and the development of accelerators. Quite often the performance of
accelerators follows the development of new and more accurate beam diagnostic systems.
3. Conference Agenda, including duration and any planned activities beyond the agenda
such as site visits, after hours dinners, etc.
Strawman Conference Agenda is attached. Agenda will be based on current topics of
interest. Conference agenda from BIW06 is also attached as a reference.
4. Conference Attendees:
Provide by category the estimated number of estimated attendees that are SC,
DOE, other Federal agency employees.
Provide by laboratory the number of attendees not identified in #3 and #4 by
category such as University, Foreign Visitors, etc.

5. Location of the conference and a statement as to why that location was chosen, including
security if applicable.
The Granlibakken Resort and Conference Center was selected as the venue for this
scientific conference due to its convenient location and to the complete range of onsite
facilities/services available to guests. The Center is located about forty-five (45) miles
from the Reno/Tahoe International Airport and about two hundred (200) miles from the
San Francisco International Airport. The Center offers a convenient shuttle service
connecting with the Reno/Tahoe International Airport. The Center is convenient to
international and domestic and local travelers.
Of the possible alternative venues we looked into, the Granlibakken Center was the least
expensive (see Attachment 1).
LBNL facilities were inadequate to provide a large conference room with classroom
seating for 120, as well as the unavailability of meeting room space for an afternoon
poster session for approximately 80 posters.
