Learning About Error Propagation, Mass, Density and Measurement
CHE 2011
Due Friday, September 23, 2011 in class that day
1. Use the time during your first and second lab periods to estimate the density of each of the
samples given to you; a piece of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), a piece of silicon carbide, a piece of
lime stone (calcium carbonate, CaCO3).
2. Write a brief report that describes your findings. Your report must have the following sections:
a. Title (a few words)
b.
c. Author names, affiliations and addresses
d. Abstract (100 to 200 words)
e. Introduction (1/2 page)
f. Experimental
i. Materials (100 words)
ii. Experimental Procedures (1/2 page)
iii. Computational Procedures (1/2 page)
g. Results and Discussion (2 pages)
This section must include a table with your estimated density values, the error in your
estimated densities and a known value from the literature with a primary citation for
that value.
h. Conclusions (1/2 page at most)
