DIRECTIONS
IF a transition metal is involved in an ionic bond, you must find the charge of the metal in
order to name the compound properly. In addition, any ionic compound that has a
transition metal in it, has TWO names. One name is the Systemic Name and one is the
Latin Name. Below are the instructions for each type of name. REMEMBER, only the
ionic compounds that involve transition metals have two names.
LATIN NAME
CrCl2 Chlorine has a –1 charge. There are TWO Chlorines for a total of –2. The one
Chromium that is present must be a +2 charge for an overall charge of zero. Look on the
Oxidation Table under the +2 column. The name for Chromium in that column is
Chromous. The Latin name of this compound is Chromous Chloride.
SYSTEMIC NAME
CrCl2 Chlorine has a –1 charge. There are TWO Chlorines for a total of –2. The one
Chromium that is present must be a +2 charge for an overall charge of zero. Every
Systemic Name has a middle initial just like most people. The System name for this
compound is Chromium (II) Chloride. The middle initial is always a Roman Numeral.
The Roman Numberal represents the charge of the transition metal.
