MADISON COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
What are we going to do?
“Whatever it Takes”
Transcript Evaluation
Your transcript is an official document listing all of the
classes you have taken, along with the grades you
made, in the 9th – 12th grades
Additionally, a transcript lists your GPAs, total credits
earned, and shows a record of standardized tests such
as the Georgia High School Graduation Tests, SAT and
ACT
Colleges require a copy of your official transcript
before they will admit you and many employers
request a copy of your transcript before they hire you
We will conduct an in-depth evaluation of your
transcript
Graduates of the class of 2011 must have 27
units to graduate.
Assuming you pass all seven classes you are
scheduled to take this year, a minimum of 20
units would be needed at this point in order
to satisfy the 27 unit requirement.
Locate the credit
summary portion of
your transcript. Here
you will find credits
attempted and credits
earned. Record the
number of credits
EARNED on your
transcript evaluation
form. Do you have at
least 20 units? Record
yes or no…
If you have less than 20
units, please indicate
your credit recovery
plans!
Graduation requirements vary depending on the diploma type you
have chosen: technology/career preparatory, college preparatory,
or dual diploma.
We will now complete a graduation requirements check-sheet.
Beginning with the classes you took in the ninth grade, record the
actual grade you made in the class on the line beside the
corresponding course on the graduation check-sheet.
Note: not all classes will need to be recorded (i.e. team sports and
other electives…)
Advisors: Please assist students with this activity (a copy of a
registration form has been provided to assist with questions about
cluster concentrations and academic electives)
Upon completion of the graduation check-
sheet, please answer the following question
on your transcript evaluation form:
Have you passed or are you currently taking
the classes needed for your diploma type?
Also list on your transcript evaluation form
the classes that you MUST pass in order to
graduate in May.
GPA’s
Academic GPA
Cumulative GPA
Rank GPA
Academic GPA: calculates the
average of only the academic
classes and academic electives
you have taken thus far.
The NGA stands for “numeric
grade average” and is on a 100-
point scale. The GPA is
calculated on a 4.0 scale where
an A = 4, B = 3, C=2, and F= 0.
The academic GPA can be used as an estimate of your
HOPE GPA. However, it does not exactly match your
HOPE GPA (it can vary up or down). The actual HOPE GPA
is calculated by the Georgia Student Finance Commission.
To be HOPE eligible, students working toward a
Career/Technology seal on their diploma need a 3.2 HOPE
GPA. Students working toward a college preparatory seal
or a dual seal need a 3.0 HOPE GPA.
Bearing in mind that the academic GPA is an estimate of
the HOPE GPA, at this point, will you be eligible for the
HOPE scholarship? Please record your answer on your
transcript evaluation form.
Rank GPA: calculates your rank
in class and determines honor
graduates. In the rank GPA,
academic courses are
weighted. AP or Honors
courses get 12 bonus points,
college preparatory get 10
bonus points, and career/tech
get 5 bonus points. Non-
academic courses and
academic electives do not
receive bonus points, but are
included in the Rank GPA
calculation.
A Rank GPA of 96.5 or higher is required to be
considered an honor graduate at the graduation
ceremony in May. Final honor graduates are
determined after 3rd quarter grades are posted,
but preliminary honor graduate status can be
discussed at this point.
Record your rank GPA in it’s numeric form on
your transcript evaluation form.
At this point, will you be an honor graduate in
May? Record yes or no on your transcript
evaluation form.
Cumulative GPA: The
cumulative GPA averages all
of the classes you have taken
in high-school. No courses
are weighted in the
cumulative GPA.
Many colleges, military personnel, and
potential employers ask for your cumulative
GPA.
Please record your cumulative GPA on your
transcript evaluation form.
Standardized Tests
Georgia High School Graduation Test
SAT
ACT
ASSET
Compass
In addition to meeting the minimum unit
requirements (27) and the specific classes
required for graduation, you must pass all
five parts of the Georgia High School
Graduation Tests in order to receive a
diploma and participate in the graduation
ceremony.
Georgia High School Graduation
Tests: Can be found under the
Standard Tests section of your
transcript. The test part, your
score and a result of Pass (P) or
Fail (F) is recorded on your
transcript.
Have you passed all parts of the
Georgia High School graduation
tests? Please record yes or no on
your transcript evaluation form.
If not, please record the test parts
you still need to pass. Dr.
Spellman (Graduation Coach) will
have study materials for you.
Please see him!
Your transcript also lists your scores for the SAT
and/or ACT if you take them.
The SAT and/or ACT is required for 4-year
colleges, some 2-year colleges and private
schools.
For technical colleges and some 2-year colleges,
the SAT and/or ACT is not required. Instead, you
will take the ASSET test or Compass test
depending on the school. Your ASSET and/or
Compass test scores are not recorded on your
transcript.
If you take the SAT
and/or ACT, your scores
will be recorded in the
Standard Tests section of
your transcript.
Remember: SAT or ACT
scores are only needed at
4-year, private and some
2 yr colleges.
If you hope to att college
or private school and
haven’t taken the SAT yet,
you need to register at:
www.collegeboard.com
If you have already taken
the SAT, you may need to
re-take the test in order to
try to improve your score
to be competitive at your
college of choice.
The SAT has three parts: Critical Reading, Math and Writing.
It is important to note that some colleges only consider the
Critical Reading and Math sections when determining
admissions eligibility.
Some colleges use the Writing score for statistical purposes
only.
Each college can set their minimum SAT requirements. A
general rule of thumb is that you would need at least a 450
Critical Reading and 450 Math for most colleges.
However, many colleges set their minimums higher. UGA is
very competitive with the average SAT score of last year’s
freshmen (Critical Reading and Math only) between 1190 -
1360.
Really want to improve your SAT score?
Then participate in the free, on-line SAT
preparation course sponsored by the
CollegeBoard (offered until Nov. 1, 2010).
Pick up a password card from the guidance
office, then go to
http://www.satonlinecourseschool.com to
register.
If you hope to attend college
and would like to take the ACT
instead of SAT, you will need to
register at:
www.actstudent.org
Again, if you have already
taken the ACT, you may want
to take it again to try to
improve your score.
The ACT has five parts: English, Reading,
Math, Science, and Writing.
Colleges set their minimums for the ACT. A
general rule of thumb is that you would need
at least a 19 on each section to be considered
by most colleges.
Again, many colleges are more competitive.
As an example, the overall average ACT score
for last year’s freshmen at UGA was 27 - 31.
Technical colleges and some 2-year colleges do not require
the SAT or ACT.
Instead, you take either the ASSET or Compass depending
on the school.
The ASSET and Compass are college entrance tests designed
specifically for technical colleges and 2-year schools.
In order to register for the ASSET or Compass, you must first
apply to the technical or 2-year college. Upon processing
your application, the college will send you a date and time
for taking the ASSET or Compass. This will be free of charge
to you.
Note: Gainesville and ABAC now require an SAT or ACT
score for admission.
On your transcript evaluation form, please
answer the question, Have you taken the SAT
or ACT or ASSET/Compass by marking yes or
no in the appropriate box.
