BROWNIE GIRL SCOUT DISCOVERY

Recruitment Presentation

 Necessary Items:

 One or two positive and enthusiastic volunteers

 Brownie Girl Scout Handbook, Try-Its, the guide for Brownie Girl Scout leaders and

Safety-Wise

 Registration materials for the new Girl Scouts, adult volunteers applications and leader

position descriptions, pens, Juliette flyer

 General Presentation/Points you will want to cover:

Introduce yourself and the volunteers who will be helping you. A brief overview of Girl Scouting has

already been given (handout piece “This is Girl Scouting”).

Points to cover:

 Pass out Juliette flier and explain this opportunity.

 Invite parents to fill out registration forms and join today.

 Emphasize the special connection between caring adult role models and the girls.

 When most girls look back on their membership in Girl Scouts they think of fun first and

then the adults who took the time.

 Being involved in Girl Scouts provides adults with the opportunity to let girls know how

important and special each of them is.

 Everyone has an interest and talent that could be matched to a volunteer opportunity in

Girl Scouts.

 Traditionally people think of Girl Scouts as weekly meetings, held in a school setting with

the leaders being capable of doing everything imaginable. BUT, Girl Scouts can be done

in a variety of ways such as meeting every two weeks or even just once a month, meeting

at schools, homes, community buildings, libraries or places of worship and others can be

invited to share their talents with the girls.

Give a brief overview of a Girl Scout meeting:

 How a meeting is generally structured.

 How to find activities/crafts/outings.

 Philosophy For Obtaining Leadership:

 Troops/groups need to have a minimum of two leaders – stress the possibility of 3 or 4

leaders... a multi-shared leadership group reduces anxiety.

 Stress the safety issues as very positive and important.

 Parent support of the troop/group activities are very important... invite others to be

involved with the girls through Girl Scouts.

C:\Docstoc\Working\pdf\4531c11b-7f39-48c7-a7a3-a8b3ddee4608.doc Rev. 9/02

 Stress flexibility of the troop/group, i.e. when their meetings are held, how many girls per

troop/group, how often they have a meeting, length of time needed for a meeting

(flexibility builds a comfort level for the potential leader).

 Validate point that there may be a feeling that: “I wouldn’t know where to begin!”, “I’m not

experienced!”, “What would I ever do?”. Practically everyone who starts out in an adult

leadership position with Girl Scouts felt the same way.

 Support is available:

 Free training for leadership position

 Volunteer service team members in the community (Service Unit Manager, Organizer,

Consultant).

 Staff members who provide assistance, and program opportunities are available.

 Monthly adult meetings to network and talk with other leaders.

 Tell them Girl Scout Leaders also have FUN! 

 Keep in mind:

- Monitor yourself so as not to overwhelm your potential volunteers

- Be enthusiastic and positive in your delivery

- Stress the fun of Girl Scouting

- You need to believe in what you are saying to obtain their trust

 Remember: Every objection is an opportunity for you to obtain leadership! 

 At this meeting: Leadership Possibilities –

 Troop/group meeting style with “leaders”.

 Multi-leader arrangement – shared leadership.

 Activity leaders – alternate assigned days (i.e. meet one Saturday morning a month;

leadership would vary from month to month). Assistance is available for monthly program

development.

 KEY: Ask for volunteers and/or ask which method of delivery parents/guardians feel

would work out best in their arrangement – key is “ask” for volunteers!

 Now that you have interested adults:

 Invite parents/guardians to register the girls as Juliettes.

 Have volunteers fill out volunteer application.

 Let them know someone will check their references and call to interview them.

 Explain that the next steps are new leader orientation and training.

 Provide direction and support to the new troop.

Juliettes for Your Daughter

The Girl Scout Council of Orange County is pleased to announce

the introduction of Juliettes as another way that girls can grow

strong in Girl Scouting! Juliettes are individual Girl Scouts, not in

a troop, who work closely with a parent or other special adult in

their life to learn and grow as only a Girl Scout can.

As a Juliette your daughter can earn awards, sign up for and

participate in some short-term programs that provide service to the community, informal learning

activities or just plain fun!

Sign your daughter up as a Juliette Girl Scout and enjoy the quality relationship that comes from sharing

your time and skills and providing a lifetime of wonderful Girl Scout memories.

Juliettes are Girl Scouts

As a Juliette the individual girl can:

 Participate in local or council-wide activities with an adult guardian.

 Receive the council newsletter (Tel-a-Scout), periodic information about events and other

opportunities, a Family Girl Scouting guide for Brownie or Junior Girl Scouts, as well as a copy of

Active Encounters (a council booklet listing activities available to her).

 Have the flexibility of working independently on Girl Scout badges, patches or Try-its.

 Purchase the Juliette patch to put on a vest or sash in place of the troop number.

 Read and do the activities in the Girl Scout handbooks and other available resources.

 Participate in day camps and/or resident camps.

 Have priority on service unit waiting lists if she wishes to be placed in the troop setting. Girls waiting

to get into a troop are encouraged to participate through Juliettes until they are placed in a troop.

 Participate in cookie sales (by affiliating with a local troop).

 Become eligible for financial assistance for membership fees, special events and program materials

 Learn more about the Girl Scout organization.

How to Register as a Juliette

Call the Girl Scout Center and ask for the Membership Development Director from your area.

She will send you a registration form or give you information about the volunteer in your area

that has them. Complete the form and send it with $7 (the national membership fee) to the Girl

Scout Center or give it to the volunteer in your area who is responsible for them.

and Try-Its, pens and Safety-Wise.)

Thank you for coming to our Brownie Girl Scout Discovery! We hope you and your daughter are

having a great time. While the girls are rotating through the activities, I’m going to tell you more about

Girl Scouting.

Girl Scouts is the world’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls - all girls - where, in an

accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In

partnership with committed adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives - like strong

values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. In Girl Scouts, girls

discover the fun, friendship and power of girls together. Through the many enriching experiences

provided by Girl Scouting, they can grow courageous and strong.

Girl Scouts is an informal educational program that promotes character, conduct, patriotism and

service. This handout titled “This Is Girl Scouting” provides you with some basic information about our

organization. The Girl Scout Promise and Law are the guiding principles upon which Girl Scouting is

founded. There are 5 program levels in Girl Scouting serving girls ages 5 - 17. Brownie Girl Scouts are

in 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade or 6 - 8 years old.

The purpose of this event is to introduce you and your daughter to Brownie Girl Scouting and

invite you to join in the fun! There are many ways to participate in the Girl Scout program. One of them

is to join as a Juliette Girl Scout. Juliettes are individual Girl Scouts, not in a troop, who work closely with

a parent or other special adult in their life to learn and grow as only a Girl Scout can. As a Juliette Girl

Scout, your daughter can earn awards, sign up for and participate in some short-term programs. This

flyer explains the many benefits of being a Juliette Girl Scout and you may register your daughter today.

The cost is just $7 for the membership year and financial assistance is available upon request.

Another way for your daughter to participate in Girl Scouting is for her to join a troop.

Traditionally people think of Girl Scouts as troops that hold weekly meetings in a school setting with the

leaders being capable of doing everything imaginable. BUT, actually Girl Scouts is done in a variety of

ways such as: meetings every 2 weeks or just once a month. Troop meetings can be held at schools,

homes, community buildings, libraries, or places of worship. Troops need to have a minimum of two

leaders, but many troops have a leadership team where several adults, both men and women, share in

the fun.

Brownie Girl Scouts may go on field trips, do community service projects and go camping. The

families of the girls work together to plan their activities and to finance the needs of the troop by

participating in our Fall Product and Cookie Sale and through dues paid at each meeting. Most troops

decide upon dues of 50 cents to $1.00 a meeting. Brownie Girl Scouts have a variety of uniform

components to choose from, but a uniform is not required for participation in Girl Scouting. Brownie Girl

Scouts have their own special pin, Handbooks, and can earn special awards called “Try-Its”. You can

find pictures of Brownie Girl Scouts in this Catalog, the Handbook and The Guide for Brownie Girl Scout

Leaders.

Girl Scout leaders are adult volunteers who make a one-year commitment. This means we

form new troops with new leadership every Fall. We know that some of you are thinking about

leadership and wondering what that entails.

Sample Script for Recruitment Presentation

If you are interested in being an adult volunteer, the first step is to fill out a volunteer application.

Next, our volunteer Service Unit Manager will check references and schedule an interview. Our Girl

Scout leaders are given an orientation and participate in free training classes. They learn about safety,

how to plan and conduct troop meetings, as well as special activity ideas. In addition, the leaders of our

community have monthly meetings to share ideas and plan events, PLUS an entire Team of adult

volunteers is ready and eager to support, mentor and guide new leaders. On top of that, Brownie Girl

Scout leaders have an entire troop of parents to help out.

Being a Girl Scout leader gives you a special connection with girls as their role model. When

most girls look back on their membership in Girl Scouting, they think of fun, friends and the adults who

took the time to be with them. Being involved in Girl Scouting provides adults with the opportunity to let

girls know how important and special they are. Brownie Girl Scouts are eager to learn new things and

their enthusiasm for each activity makes being a Brownie Girl Scout leader great fun!

I invite you today to become a partner in your daughter’s Girl Scout experience. Whether you

choose to take on the role of parent mentor of a Juliette Girl Scout, Brownie Girl Scout Leader, First Aide

parent, field trip driver, troop treasurer, or song leader; this is your opportunity to volunteer your time,

talent and treasures to provide your daughter with the best possible Girl Scout experience. Best of all,

it’s FUN!

May I answer any questions for you?

Please take a volunteer application. You may fill it out now or take it home and return it in this

attached envelope. Please remember to add postage.

I am happy now to assist you in registering your daughter as a Juliette Girl Scout. Our Service

Unit has the following activities planned that Brownie Girl Scouts and Juliette Girl Scouts may participate

in:

 Daisy/Brownie Event in month

 International Fair Event in month

 Me & My Guy Event in month

 Mother/Daughter Event in month

 Summer Day Camp in month

 Share Active Encounters activities that are coming up

 Pass out family Girl Scouting booklet

(Once all questions are answered and forms completed, invite parents to join their daughters and

participate in the remaining activity rotations.)

Now it is time for you to join your daughter and rotate with her through activity stations. Please

take your fliers with you.

GIRL SCOUT GLIDER INSTRUCTIONS

Have you ever seen a glider with wings shaped like rings? These wings don’t flap

like a bird’s, but they do help the glider move through the air. Try it!

Supplies

 This sheet of paper  A ruler

 Scissors  Cellophane tape

 A plastic drinking straw

Instructions

Cut out the two strips on this page.

Make two rings out of the strips of paper by taping both ends.

Make sure the ends overlap by about 1”.

Carefully slip one end of the straw in between the taped ends of

the big ring. Do the same with the smaller ring.

Check to make sure that the ring stands straight up from the

straw. If they are crooked, the glider will not fly right. Tape the

inside of each ring to the straw.

Here’s how to make your glider fly. Hold the straw in the middle with the

smaller ring in front, then throw it gently. You have liftoff!

Program Goal 1: “Girls will develop to their full potential.” Girl Scouting will

allow girls to utilize and practice talents and abilities.

THE FITNESS WHEEL

To make the fitness wheel:

Make a circle out of heavy cardboard. Label it as shown below or with different activities. Make a hole in

the center of the circle and fasten it to a larger piece of cardboard with a metal brad. Draw an arrow on

the bottom of the larger piece.

Spin the fitness wheel and do the exercise that stops nearest the arrow. Do as many as you have time.

Other options:

Start and stop a record player or radio (as in Musical Chairs) while using the Wheel of Fitness. When the

music stops, spin the wheel again. Start the music and do the new activity.

Put the name of each activity or exercise on a card. Place the cards in a box or bag. Have the girls draw

a card out and perform the new activity.

PLACEMAT SERVICE PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS

Placemats can be decorated and donated to a local nursing home, homeless shelter, meals on wheels or

hospital.

This Service Project provides girls with an opportunity to implement the part of the Girl Scout Law that

reads “to be considerate and caring” and also supports Program Goal 4 “Girls will contribute to the

improvement of society through the use of their abilities and leadership skills, working in cooperation with

others”.

Plain paper placemats can be purchased from a restaurant supply store such as Costco, Sams, or Smart

& Final OR create your own from large pieces of construction paper. These can then be embellished

with stickers, crayons, markers and construction paper shapes cut and glued on. Girls might choose a

holiday or seasonal theme (i.e. spring flowers, Valentine, autumn harvest) or something more general

(i.e. America – Red, White & Blue, or All people are special). Let the girls use their imagination and

creativity.

While the girls are creating their masterpieces, discuss with them why community service is important:

 Helps girls develop concern for the well being of their communities

 Promotes girls’ understanding of how the quality of community life affects every member of

society

 Encourages girls to use their skills to work with others for the benefit of all

Labels can be added to the lower right hand corner identifying the troop, but girls should not write their

names on the placemats.

“BROWNIE SMILE” SONG

I’ve something in my pocket.

It belongs across my face,

And I keep it very close at hand

In a most convenient place.

I’m sure you couldn’t guess it

If you guessed a long, long while.

So I’ll take it out and put it on --

It’s a great big Brownie Smile!
