Farewell from Mrs Cox

Dear Parents, Staff, Governors, PTA and Friends, past and present,

It is with regret and some trepidation, that I write this final message to you all.

As I cast my mind back over the past eighteen years, I remember what a huge change it was for

me to work in a school, (and how busy I was) because, you see, my previous job was as a

secretary, working for a large electronic company called Plessey, where we were involved in

building a battlefield radio system for the Australian Army! I recall the day at Southleigh Park

House, when a helicopter landed on our large lawn, carrying some VIPs, a Brigadier and a Colonel,

from Australia, on a visit to the site.

I was reminded of this visit a few years later when the school celebrated its 50 th Anniversary

with the arrival of a very swish-looking helicopter, which hovered over the school playground to

take an aerial photograph of the children and staff who had joined hands across the playground

to spell out the message ‘Happy Birthday, HJS’. The pilot was looking for this pre-arranged

message in ‘words’ and was most impressed that we had spelt it out in musical notes, thanks to

Mrs Bundy’s expertise!! I will always remember the wonderful musicals we performed in the

school hall, where my knowledge of stage make-up came into use and with my teams of willing

helpers, we transformed the children into character, using beards, wigs moustaches, etc. In

later years, we took the musical productions to the atmospheric Kings Theatre – an experience

your children will always remember. I have known four headteachers during my time at HJS;

Maurice Le Blanc, (when my own three children were pupils), Barry Scott, Kerry Barnes (a great

teller of stories in assemblies) and Kate Utting (who works many long hours for the school). Each

headteacher has worked hard to give your children a good education; all have contributed to the

success of the school. I leave in the knowledge that this good work will continue. I will miss

everyone I have met over the years and wish to say a special thanks to the wonderful Admin

Team, who seem able to cope with any situation that comes their way. All the best to my

successor, Mrs Anderson, who I know will look after you all.

Good luck, Horndean Junior School and a happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year to

everyone.
