Message From Barry
Fantastic news this month! The Beattie government has shown their commitment to Queensland‟s
Outback by providing an additional $750,000 funding over three years for marketing and product
development. This money is geared not to our traditional marketing activities, but to new market
segments, interstate. Tourism Queensland is the lead agency on the project and we will be working
closely with them. This additional funding will be very much geared to a whole of region perspective
and will pick up on the iconic nature of the region to improve awareness of our Region in southern
states. Therefore, we will see very little, if any, change to our traditional marketing activity, as this
campaign will have a life of its own. On your behalf I have sent thanks to both Premier Beattie and
Minister Keech.
Tourism Awards – I am pleased to let you know that Restaurant 2 (from Brisbane) will be catering
for our Tourism Awards this year and having sampled their catering on several occasions, we are in
for a treat. It is also pleasing to advise you that all the produce being used for the Awards has been
sourced from Queensland‟s Outback. Well done to Noela Ward and her team for pulling off such a
coupe. And the Carnivale Cocktail! will knock your socks off! That is certainly going to get the
evening off to a fitting start!
Last week I attend the annual Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) in Perth. ATE is the biggest
international marketing activity that we undertake each year and this year was no exception. I spoke
to a range of wholesalers from New Zealand, UK, USA, Canada, Germany and Scandanavia. There
is a lot of interest in Queensland‟s Outback as many wholesalers are keen to send their repeat
visitors to somewhere new and interesting – where else but Queensland‟s Outback.
Two weeks ago, we farewelled Brett Murphy as he left the OQTA to commence work with BMA
Speakers and Celebrities. As you were aware, Brett was our trainee and unfortunately his 12
months came to an end. It was great to see Brett grow over the last year and he has certainly been
of great assistance to us in this time. I don‟t think this will be the last we will see of Brett – he
definitely wants to come to the Tourism Awards in Mitchell and at present we think we can use him
as a sound technician! And he‟s popped in to visit us a couple of times since he left
On Monday 4 July we welcome Dianne Anderson from Southern Cross University, who is
completing a 5-month internship with the OQTA. We have a number of projects that have been on
the back-burner for a while (like fact sheets) that Dianne will be taking control of. Dianne spent a
number of years in Longreach, so is no stranger to our Region. I know she will be an asset to us.
Also in July, Stephanie Sinton – a marketing student from the University of Queensland – will start
www.outbackholidays.info
working as a volunteer with the OQTA, one day per week to gain some more practical industry-
based work experience. We know that Stephanie will be of great assistance to us.
To add to the influx of staff to the OQTA Office, this week we appointed Kimberly Chisholm as our
Tourism Education Development Manager – we have been affectionately calling this staff
member TED for the past 6 months. Kimberly comes to us from a recent stint in Alice Springs in a
very similar role with the Northern Territory Tourism Commission. Over the coming couple of
months, Kimberly will be identifying what training needs are required in the Region and preparing
our Training Plan and then we will commence implementation from mid-September and go through
until April 2006. Kimberly will spend a lot of her time in the Region – so you will get to know her very
well. Kimberly commences on Monday 25 July 2005 and I am hoping to bring her to the Region the
following week.
We are awaiting word on funding for a new trainee in the new financial year. If we are successful,
we will be recruiting a new trainee to take over the work that Brett has been doing. I would like to
recruit someone from within the Region (or close by) if possible, so if you know of anyone who might
be interested can you please let us know.
Having just driven through parts of the Region, I know there are a lot of caravans on the road and
people in attractions – great to see! It was great to also see some good rainfall throughout the
Region. I hope you were lucky enough to get some of it!
Until next month.
Barry
Check out Queensland’s backyard’ – Campaign
Update
The Check out Queensland‟s backyard campaign has produced excellent results since its launch
in February this year. Our campaign tracking indicates nearly 40,000 visitors to the campaign
website www.adventureoutback.com.au and a strong conversion rate of around 14% through
brochure orders, email referrals to products and link referrals to products. Brochure requests
received through the call centre have also been very good, with nearly 1,800 orders.
The next burst of activity for the Check out Queensland‟s backyard campaign will be running in
August. There are still opportunities for members to participate in the press components of this
campaign. Limited advertising space is still available in the Queensland‟s Outback features to run in
the Townsville Bulletin, Rockhampton Morning Bulletin and Sunday Mail. To secure your space
please contact Tracey McCulloch at Coroneo & Co on 07 3252 4860 or
t.mcculloch@coroneo.com.au The booking DEADLINE is 20 July and the material DEADLINE is 5
August. Space is limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment!
Remember, even if you are unable to advertise in all, or any, of the cooperative press features
throughout the year you can maximise the direct benefits for your business from this campaign
by:
1. Advertising in the Travellers’ Guide to showcase your product to every consumer that
receives a brochure throughout the year – total circulation of 110,000 copies per year!
2. Subscribing to ATDW to reach your share of the ever-increasing number of consumers
visiting the campaign website – current visitation of around 10,000 per month!

Queensland a Big Hit at ATE- Queensland was a big hit at the Australian Tourism
Exchange (ATE) 2005 in Perth last month. As always, the quality of international buyers was

Great FUEL SAVER offer IS A WINNER!
What can be done to challenge the continuing increase in fuel prices and million dollar airline
www.outbackholidays.info
promotional programs? Limestone Coast Tourism has responded by launching a Fuel Saver
Campaign.
The RTO has produced a special four-colour brochure featuring 40 accommodation properties
participating in the scheme. Visitors need only stay 3 consecutive nights in any of the properties
between 18th May and 16th September 2005, to receive 30 cents per litre off fuel.
To access the fuel offer, visitors receive special stickers for each night and this is affixed to the
back of the brochure. This is then presented to any of the participating 18 fuel stations listed in the
brochure to obtain the discount.
Limestone Coast Tourism reports a great response to this innovative fuel offer with lots of free
media coverage as well. For more details, please contact: Peter Abbott on Email:

„lottery-type‟ ballot process. We think it is very important to communicate to industry this is
happening, so they have an opportunity to secure appropriate domain names.

Show Report - Brisbane Caravan, Camping &
Touring Holiday Show
8-14 June 2005
The Queensland Caravan, Camping & Touring Holiday Show was held in Brisbane from 8 – 14 June
2005 at the RNA Showgrounds. Due to the expansion of the caravan show, this year it was not held
in conjunction with the 4X4 & Fishing Shows as it has been in previous years. Even with this split,
the size of the caravan show remained consistent with previous years with increased exhibits
directly relating to the caravanning market. Show organisers anticipated a 10% decrease in
attendance, however final numbers were stronger than predicted. The OQTA had a 9m X 3m stand,
www.outbackholidays.info Queensland‟s Outback News
Page 7
with the Overlander‟s Way and Australia‟s Dinosaur Trail both taking a 3m X 3m space adjacent to
this.
We would like to send out a big THANK YOU to all of the members & shire representatives who
came along to work on the Queensland‟s Outback, Overlander‟s Way and Australia‟s Dinosaur Trail
stands- Michaella Hindom, Boulia Shire Council; Sandra Allen, Blackall Shire Council; Kylie Owens,
Barcaldine Shire Council; Rachel Wilson, Murweh Shire Council; Marcus & Fran, Argylla Tourist
Park; Noela Ward, Booringa Shire Council; Terry & Jan Aspinall, Explorers Caravan Park; Pauline
Bilokur, Bulloo Shire Council; Jan Bimrose, Outback at Isa; Merry Higgins, Paroo Shire Council;
Fiona Wilkins, Rosegreen Station; Sherilee Honnery, Flinders Shire Council; Rob Ievers, Richmond
Shire Council; Margaret Oxley, Winton Shire Council; and Jan Wallace, McKinlay Shire Council.
Consistent with previous years, there was a strong interest in Queensland‟s Outback. It is
encouraging to see that consumer awareness and positive perception of the region is increasing
year on year. Travellers are keen to explore all corners of Queensland‟s Outback, not just the well-
worn paths of the major highways. The demographics of the market are also widening, with baby
boomers and young families interested in travelling to the region.
There was also an unprecedented number of customers saying that they had already received a
copy of the Travellers‟ Guide after phoning or writing away for one. This is a great indication that the
other marketing activities of the Check out Queensland‟s backyard campaign have been reaching
our target markets!
Consumer & Trade Show Calendar
OQTA is planning to attend the below shows over the coming twelve months.
Watch this space for more information on each show as the dates get closer. Remember- the best
way to have your product represented at every one of these shows is to advertise in the
Queensland’s Outback Travellers’ Guide.
2005 October 20 – 23 Melbourne 4X4 Show
2006 February TBA QR Rail & Holiday Expo
February 8 – 11 OzTalk New Zealand (Brisbane)
February 22 – 26 Adelaide Caravan & Camping Show
March 16 – 20 Perth Caravan & Camping Show (brochure only)

Keeping the Travellers’ Guide on Track!
As mentioned in the last edition of Queensland‟s Outback News, OQTA have been undertaking
some consumer research in order to determine the effectiveness of the Travellers‟ Guide as a travel
motivator and travel companion, as well as identifying possible changes to improve the Guide in line
with consumer needs.
This research has been completed and we are very pleased to say that overall the Travellers‟ Guide
rated very highly with our consumers! Of the people that provided an answer for these questions,
99.6% found the Guide useful, 92.7% used the Guide for pre-trip planning and 95% also used it
while on the road. The survey was quite comprehensive with questions relating to content, design &
layout, advertising, relevance of information, usability and more. Most areas received a very high
satisfaction rating, but it did highlight some areas for improvement. Some notable examples were
the need to include more information on National Parks, detailed sub-regional maps and the
inclusion of rate information in the accommodation directory. OQTA will be using this information to
further develop the content, layout and design of the 2006 Travellers‟ Guide.
www.outbackholidays.info Queensland‟s Outback News
Page 8
Of particular interest to members is that a whopping 84% of people found the advertising useful
(15% unsure). The standard formatting of ads is also well received, with 85% of respondents
preferring the formatted style for smaller ads. A direct quote from one survey was “We used the
advertising material extensively to decide where to stay and where to go.” Keep this in mind
when the advertising prospectus for the 2006 Travellers’ Guide arrives in your letter box!
The winners of the Birdsville Races tour package kindly donated by Greyhound Australia were
Cheryle & Jo Lindic from Greensborough in Victoria.

firstly in the way that they promote their city to its visitors.
We have had the pleasure of staying at Argylla for the past week and as seasoned caravanners
who have travelled extensively around Australia, we can quite honestly say that we have yet to stay
in a better run or friendlier park.
Free afternoon tea each day and free bus tours to the city is the norm at this van park. Nothing is
trouble to them and when two of our party fell ill, they went above and beyond their duty in ensuring
that we got immediate access to the required medical aid.
Park manager Michael is a great ambassador, not only for Argylla Van Park, but to the City of Mt Isa
as well. We will long remember our stay in Mt Isa as a direct result of the hospitality and care shown
to us by the management staff of Argylla”.
Sincerest thanks to you all.
