Course Description: IB Chemistry 2 is an upper level chemistry course, which fills the
need for the first year IB Chemistry and an Honors path class. Chemistry is taught with
an emphasis on higher order thinking on important issues involving chemistry. Students
must have a high ability in mathematics and their self-motivation must be above that of a
regular chemistry student.
A prerequisite to this course is a passing grade in Honors Chemistry 1 (Pre IB
Chemistry).
Procedures:
1. The teacher starts the class and ends the class-- not the bell.
2. Homework assigned may be collected and graded mostly on completion and
selected problems will be graded for correctness. All homework assigned will be
returned and you are expected to place it in a separate section in your notebook.
All I ever ask of you on homework is to attempt all problems and always show
your work. No Work = No Credit!
3. Late work: There is no late work accepted.
4. There will be pop quizzes given periodically to assess your progress. Be
prepared!
5. Tests will be given about every 2 weeks and generally cover 2 chapters. Tests
will be mostly multiple choice and true-false type questions.
6. Expectations of what to bring to class each day:
pencil and blue or black pens only.
Scientific calculator (must have EE or EXP key); graphic calculator is
suggested.
class notebook
USB Drive
Chemistry 2 AP, SL and HL Y1 Syllabus: 2008-2009
7. There is to be no copying; copying is a serious violation of the IB/AP Honor
code and if you are caught cheating the appropriate actions will be taken.
This includes bell work, homework, tests and especially lab reports!
8. Note taking is required: Do not try to write down all I say; only write down the
items you feel I stress enough to make them important. For your convenience, the
appropriate power points are available on the class website you may print in
outline form (ask if you need assistance).
9. Absences and make-up work procedures: When you are absent, it is YOUR
responsibility to find out what was missed. Turn in make-up work in make-up
work bin; do not try to hand it to me. Make sure the paper is labeled properly.
10. Headers for homework:
a. First Name Last Name
b. Assignment with page number
c. Date turned in
d. Period/Seat Number
11. You will be expected to keep a notebook for class with a section for a) general
class materials, b) notes, c) homework/class work, and d) quizzes and test answer
sheets, in chronological order), e) Group IV materials. Notebooks are to be 3 ring
binders (preferably a 1.5” binder or larger). A separate folder (white 3-ring
binder ½ to 1 inch) must be used for lab reports (you should already have this).
This is a requirement for CCHS IB/AP Sciences.
Discipline Plan:
A. Rules:

Lab Contributions:
There will be a $15 lab contribution associated with this course. The contribution should
be paid to the instructor no later than Wednesday of the second week of school.
Grading:
Grades will be assessed based on a points-average system in accordance to the following
table:
Category Points per Item Weight (%)
Homework 25 16
Quizzes 20 10
Tests 100 40
Group IV Project/AP
Reaction Quizzes Varies 10
Practicals (Labs Reports) 100 24
Totals: Total points divided by Percentage from previous column
possible points multiplied by weight = grade
**Weight Percentages are susceptible to change
Letter Grades will be determined using the Orange County Adopted Scale
Laboratory :
1. Goal: To provide the student the opportunities to observe and apply the
knowledge gained in the classroom setting as well as familiarize the student with
IB practices concerning practicals.
2. Text: Lab sheets provided by the instructor.
3. Lab Expectations: Students are expected to comply with the HIGH classroom
expectations. In addition, lab safety precaution (Lab Saftey sheet) MUST be
followed at all times. These rules will be strictly enforced to ensure your safety
as well as the safety of others around you. Infractions of the safety rules will
result in immediate disciplinary action and/or removal of lab privileges. Also a
Lab Safety quiz will be given and a minimum grade of 80% must be achieved to
participate in lab activities.
4. Points: Labs will be graded based on a rubric in accordance with IB standards.
There may also be a written pre- and post-Lab quiz/assignment.
5. Absences on Lab Days: lab missed: if excused absence you may make it up
after school; see instructor for appointment. frequently missed labs will
require a parent/teacher/student conference to discuss the repercussions of
missing labs.
6. Lab write-ups: Labs must be TYPED and placed in your lab notebook according
to guidelines on attachment. You must stamp a rubric stamp and sign the anti-
plagiarism contract each and every time. All lab reports should be written in the
third person (no I’s nor you’s allowed). If the instructor states that a written
report is acceptable for a lab, DO NOT write on the back of the page and only
write LEDGILBLY!
