INT. EVA'S APARTMENT BEDROOM - NIGHT
The camera rises toward an open window over two forms in a
double bed. Both people are fast asleep. The woman's face
is toward us. She wears a scarf over her head to hide the
baldness from Chemotherapy.
A gentle breeze moves the curtains slightly. The glow of
what might be the moon at first gets brighter and brighter.
The camera floats toward it and out the window as the light
grows more intense. The form of a glowing saucer becomes
apparent.
EXT. GARDEN BEHIND EVA'S APARTMENT COMPLEX - NIGHT
An energy field in the form of dust and mist rises as the
spacecraft silently lands over the garden hill and out of
sight.
INT. EVA'S BEDROOM APARTMENT
EVA and DOUG sit up wide awake and turn toward the bright
light coming through the window.
DOUG is a husky man in his early sixties. A gardener all his
life, his face and hands are rough and tan from years of
outdoor work.
EVA is Doug's height, but frail and swimming in her clothes
from extreme weight loss.
EXT. GARDEN PATH BEHIND EVA'S APARTMENT COMPLEX - NIGHT
EVA and DOUG start up the hill and approach the space craft.
They see that indeed, there is something strange in the
garden. They stop to assess the situation.
EVA
I'm going up there.
DOUG
No you're not Eva.
EVA just looks at him and starts walking toward the dust.
Doug throws his arms up in exasperation. He waits to see if
she means it then starts to follow.
DOUG (CONT'D)
(talking to himself)
You're suppose to take it easy and
not exert yourself. I don't call
this taking it easy.
Eva walks slowly and with great pain. Doug puts his arm
around her in support of her endeavor.
As she approaches the craft we see a cloudy mist. It has a
light glow to it like an energy field. She approaches slowly
as the mist blows about her, she straightens and her step
quickens.
She turns to Doug and smiles. Apparently she feels much
better and the pain is gone.
EVA
Doug, I think I can go on my own
from here.
She stands at the mist/energy opening not knowing what is
beyond. Doug watches, nods and smiles reassuringly.
Eva walks into the mist a little further.
Tree branches around the craft move and we see the outline of
what appears to be a very thin individual with a large head
and enormous eyes. The skin is of a silver nature. He is
dressed in human clothing very much like Doug's.
As the camera moves down his body he indeed looks human,
except for the feet. Each ankle looks like the bottom of a
small tree trunk, circular with root structures coming off of
each one. His hands have a similar appearance, thought not
as dramatic.
The camera stops at the feet and the alien's roots start
pushing into the soil.
Eva stands there staring at this being in disbelief. She
hesitates but finds words, however clumsy.
EVA (CONT'D)
Dear God - I can't believe you're
really here.
The dust becomes thicker and envelopes Eva. The thin alien
with the large head smiles and seems to communicate to her
without speaking...
Somehow we hear the following...
GEORGE
The Time has come!
Eva practically drops to the ground at the sound. She
searches for words to communicate with this being.
EVA
Who?... What are you? Why are you
here?
GEORGE`
My name is George. You are Eva and
we have a cure for cancer and have
come to share it with you.
EVA
I have so many questions for you.
We have waited for you and listened
with our telescope dishes for so
long.
Eva looks around the mist. She is visibly better. She tries
to look into the space craft through the door behind George.
She smiles at the being.
EVA (CONT'D)
A cure... you - you have a cure? I
have cancer...
GEORGE
Yes. We know you have that
disease.
Your cancer is in the final stages.
You do not have long to live now.
The remedy for this is something
Earth beings already have, but very
few are able to put it to use. It
requires no drugs or surgery.
EVA
But wait. Where are you from? Did
we pick up your signals not knowing
what they were?
GEORGE looks quizzical. (Why has she changes the subject?)
Eva still cannot believe her eyes and steps to the side
trying to see behind George and into the craft.
EVA (CONT'D)
What does this mean? What will you
do?
GEORGE
We have been doing this kind of
healing on our planet for centuries
and now, no one is sick from
diseases.
In the meantime, outside the energy mist, Doug has lost Eva
in the mist and is trying to make a decision. Should he go
in after her? He looks at his watch, then down to the
apartment complex then back to the energy field, feels around
for his cell phone then calls out.
DOUG
Eva..? Eva???
EVA
(to Geroge)
Just a second.
(to Doug)
I'm fine dear. Just wait right
there.
Doug starts to question but thinks better of it.
DOUG
(calling back to her)
But...how do I know.... Oh... okay.
The camera goes back to Eva who is still trying to look into
the space craft.
GEORGE
Eventually our bodies will wear out
and we will die, but until that
time we all lead productive and
satisfying lives.
George studies Eva actions then offers...
GEORGE (CONT'D)
We have come to Earth so that your
planet will have what we have.
He generously steps to the side so Eva might see better.
GEORGE (CONT'D)
Courage to walk into and through
the mist is the first part of the
cure. The rest we will teach you.
Because of your knowledge and
cancer condition you can be used as
a portal for your world. If you
accept this cure and the world is
made aware of it, no one will die
from any diseases.
Eva starts toward the opening to the craft. George keeps
talking, apparently enjoying the sound of his voice.
GEORGE (CONT'D)
They will still die from old age or
accidents, but not from cancer,
H.I.V., or any other devastating
diseases that Earth is plagued
with.
Eva carefully enters the craft opening and tries to adjust
her eyes to what is inside. George follows her like a puppy
and continues his monologue.
GEORGE (CONT'D)
Are you willing to be the one who
brings this your kind?
INT. ALIEN SPACE CRAFT - NIGHT
The camera pans not a spaceship full of computer screens
flashing lights and buttons, but a room that looks much like
the inside of a cluttered garage.
There are old bicycles, wooden crates hanging from the
ceiling, lots of Terra Cotta pots, lawn mowers, rakes, old
tires, smashed garbage cans and hefty bags.
EVA
Is this a joke?
GEORGE
"Joke: a thing that someone says to
cause amusement or laughter
especially a story with a funny
punch line."
EVA
(referring to the mess)
This is too much.
GEORGE
I understand. Take as much time as
you need, the future of this planet
is in your hands Eva.
Eva hasn't really heard what George has said. She is much too
preoccupied with the strange interior of the craft.
EVA
The what?
The alien smiles broadly at Eva and gestures toward the junk.
GEORGE
I love Earth things. Why do humans
have such things Eva?
Eva smiles back.
EVA
I'm not sure George. We seem to
collect a lot of stuff in our
lives, don't we.
GEORGE
In your lives?
We hear Doug from outside the craft getting a little more
frantic.
DOUG
Well, we better go now. This has
really been a nice visit. We
should come with a welcome gift or
something Eva... Eva...? Are you
still there? Eva...?
Eva smiles as the both walk toward the door of the craft.
She walks back through the energy mist where she sees Doug
waiting for her. He is concerned, but smiles when he sees
her glowing face and her renewed strength. They walk hand in
hand back to their apartment.
INT. EVA'S APARTMENT- NIGHT
Eva and Doug sit by the fire with a glass of wine and she
proceeds to tell him about what just happened. They are
going over what just happened and trying to decide what to do
next.
EVA
I have not felt that good or felt
like laughing or enjoyed another
being, like that for a very long
time... Maybe since I was a kid.
It was the most wonderful feeling.
DOUG
This whole thing is weird. What
should we tell the people.
Everybody will want to know what's
going on. Melody has picked this
thing for sure.
EVA
It WAS weird. I have so many
questions for that little guy, but
suddenly it was just time to leave
and that was fine with me at the
time.
DOUG
...so he has a cure for cancer?
You mean he can cure YOUR cancer?
EVA
I don't know yet. He said
something about me being a portal
or something.
DOUG
Well, we should call your SETI
people first then go back up there
for an official welcome visit.
Maybe he can cure my plants
EVA
I don't think that's what he meant
when he said he could cure all
diseases.
DOUG
Well maybe not but plants are alive
too.
EVA
Yes they are and come to think
about it, it did look like he had
roots for feet. I don't know how
I'm going to sleep tonight.
DOUG
How about coming to bed, lying down
and closing your eyes. You're going
to need your rest.
EXT. PARKING LOT OUTSIDE MANAGERS OFFICE - DAY
People are standing around a satellite dish with signs that
say, "Aliens go home" "Ban the dish" "Why us?" Etc.
MELODY, an astrophysicist and E.T. expert is explaining the
dish device to the people.
Eva walks up to the back of the crowd. Melody proceeds fast,
as if reading the information from a book.
MELODY
I know this looks ominous, but it
is really very simple. Here, we
have a parabolic antenna designed
to receive microwaves from
communications satellites, which
transmit data transmissions or
broadcasts, such as your very own
satellite television. The
difference is that this analyzes
deep space radio telescope data
that it obtains while other
astronomers are using the big
telescope... uh... yonder. (points)
Nothing to fear. Any questions?
At first there is silence, then Melody is inundated with
abusive shouts and yelling. "Get that damned thing out off
the parking lot" ( why is she stunned)"Why do they rent to
every nut that comes along?" "What's all that junk on the
roof? Are you trying to blow us all up?" " I can't get good
TV reception, These radio waves cause cancer"
The crowd disbands. Only Eva is left looking admiringly at
the radio telescope receiver. Melody is stunned.
EVA
Quite the machine here.
MELODY
...um.
EVA
...lota work
MELODY
Yeah.
EVA
Any activity?
MELODY
Oh yeah.
EVA
Really... what?
MELODY
Last week... wasn't even coming
from the big radio scope. It was
close. Really close. Like, right
in our back yard. We got Spikes,
Gaussian, pulses.
Eva is very uncomfortable.
EVA
Huh.. That's three separate radio
events. What can that mean?
MELODY
Only one thing.
EVA
Have you contacted the other SETI
members about this? Does anyone
else know?
MELODY
I've mentioned it to a couple
people I trust. The group misses
you Eva. We could really use you
back in the office at a time like
this. It could be what we've all
been waiting for. Come on up. I
want to show you the monitors.
Doug is walking toward both of them with a big smile on his
face. Apparently his reaction to the angry crowd. Eva
signals for him to follow them.
INT. MELODY'S APARTMENT - DAY
The room is filled with all kinds of equipment. Computers
with sky maps, persistency graphs, Frequency Histograms,
Power Histograms.
EVA
Is the signal still going out to
sector 212?
MELODY
Oh yeah. And there is some sort of
transient pulse that I've never
seen before.
Doug and Eva close in around the computer screen that shows
the outgoing signal.
EVA
What's different?
MELODY
It's scrambled, but last night I
cleared it up and its an exact
reversal of what we're sending. As
if something is trying to mimic our
signal and send it back... sort of
like looking into a mirror.
EVA
Maybe we should shut it off?
MELODY
No way, things are just getting
interesting now. Anyway, this
computer only has the signal
software on it. So if we aren't in
a position to send, and I want to
save energy, I just shut it off.
Turn it back on and the signal
starts up again... can't get
simpler than that.
Doug smiles... even a Gardner gets it.
DOUG
That reminds me. I need to check
the timer on my sprinklers when I
get back.
EVA
Whoa... that is expensive stuff.
MELODY
I know. The deal is that I keep it
here and never let the SETI group
have it.
It has a live feed to every stat
OM's group is monitoring.
Downtown city high-rise, Floor 20, a dark SURVEILLANCE room
lit only by computer screens and the lights from nearby
skyscrapers.
INT. CITY SURVEILLANCE ROOM - NIGHT
Men in black suits analyze data on the computer screens
marked with Alpha and Omega symbols.
The ALPHA computer screen shows much activity with falling
numbers from every country in the world. These are the
projected births.
The death screen begins to drop off to a trickle.
The third screen shows maximum occupancy of planet earth.
O.M., A mature and finished business woman with perfect
clothes and makeup and a cold stern face ushers EVA into the
room.
O.M.
This is the surveillance room Eva.
All the data of the births and
deaths on Earth comes in here and
is analyzed by these gentlemen. We
have resources from all over the
world.
O.M. leads as they continue walking.
O.M. (CONT'D)
This map shows the projected
population of the world.
She points to India.
O.M. (CONT'D)
What if it looked like this?
The entire map glows and O.M.turns to Eva.
O.M. (CONT'D)
Can you imagine the population so
huge that we can no longer provide
food, fuel, clothing, shelter?
EVA is dressed sharply in business attire, visibly weak from
her battle with cancer.
EVA
It looks like you are monitoring
the population. Why would you want
to do that?
They walk toward the window. The glow of thousands of lights
from skyscrapers light them from behind.
EVA (CONT'D)
What does this have to do with me?
O.M.
Because, Eve. You will have a
decision to make. One that will
effect the whole world. One that
will determine the life or death of
this planet.
INT. EVA'S APARTMENT BEDROOM - NIGHT
DOUG, Eva's husband, enters the bedroom, where Eva has been
sleeping most of the day.
DOUG
Hey... are you awake? I brought
you some tea.
EVA sits up on the bed. Doug sits beside her.
EVA
I'm just so tired I could sleep the
rest of the night. How was your
day?
Doug hands her the tea.
DOUG
Good. The roses are red and the
violets are blue. Oh and the
hummers are back I had to put more
sugar water out. How was your
meeting with O.M.?
EVA
She knows about the spacecraft
somehow. She says I have to make a
very important decision.
Eva slumps against Doug's shoulder. Dark circles are around
her eyes. Doug steadies the tea cup before it spills.
EVA (CONT'D)
I don't think I can do this
anymore... I can't go through Chemo
again. I'm just too tired.
DOUG
What do you mean?
Eva sits up straight and musters the energy to have a talk
and change the subject.
EVA
It was fun looking through all the
scrap books and trying to remember
those people. Remember how
important all that was then?... Now
it's all wrapped up in a little
memory and a smile.
Doug nods, understanding what Eva means.
DOUG
The attorney said we need to
notarize the will.
EVA
Hmm. Well that's it in a nutshell.
The past and future are all taken
care of.
Eva gazes into his eyes and smiles.
EVA (CONT'D)
I'm going to miss those eyes.
DOUG
Not if I can help it. And quit
talking like that.
EVA
You'd better start facing this
really soon Sweetie. It's
happening NOW.
DOUG
They still want you at the
children's hospital tomorrow.
Should I tell them you can't make
it?
EVA
No, I've slept all day and I have
some pills. Can you come along?
DOUG
Wouldn't miss it.
EXT. GARDEN BEHIND EVA'S APARTMENT COMPLEX - NIGHT
Eva approaches the dust and the branches start shaking as
before.
EVA
George. I need your help. I just
need enough energy to get through
tomorrow with the children.
GEORGE
Eva, you know we can do that, but
without the final steps of the cure
you are shortening your life even
more.
EVA
Sooner or later doesn't make much
difference at this point. Will
you?
MONTAGE: - DAY
Eva and Doug visit children with cancer. Eva is in the
center of a class, outside sitting on swing sets. In a
science lab helping them finish an experiment.
EXT. PLAYGROUND AT CHILDREN'S CANCER CENTER - DAY
One little boy won't leave Eva's side. His name is JIMMY and
he wears a Dodger's Baseball cap over his bald head. It's too
big for him and turns to the side.
Eva spreads out a picnic blanket in the grass and Doug brings
over a big basket full of Kool-aid and sandwiches.
Eva hands Jimmy a peanut butter sandwich and the three of
them watch the children play. Jimmy is old beyond his years,
as most kids who have terminal cancer are.
JIMMY
They keep saying it's okay to die,
but I don't think so.
EVA
Why not? We all have to do it
sooner or later.
JIMMY
It's just... I don't know... I'm
really frightened of it. I don't
want to be alone.
Eva puts her sandwich back into the wax-paper, folds her
hands and thinks a moment.
EVA
Jimmy, what's the first thing you
remember about being alive?
JIMMY
The first thing? I have to think
back. I remember standing in my
crib and pointing to a thing in the
sky. It must have been an
airplane. Mostly I remember the
sound and how amazing it was.
EVA
Anything before that?
JIMMY
Velvet. It was so soft and I felt
safe and very still. There was a
square of color and I wanted to be
close to it and in the same place
with it.
EVA
Where do you think you were then?
JIMMY
Probably wasn't born yet.
EVA
Think further back... not with your
head. Close your eyes and try not
to think of anything.
JIMMY
There are impressions of color and
something like forests or
buildings, but I don't know how to
describe them.
EVA
How did you feel then?
JIMMY
Warm and safe I think is the best
way to put it.
EVA
I think that's where we all came
from Jimmy. That's our real home.
And, we're all going back there one
day.
JIMMY
Do you think that where Billy, my
brother went last year?
EVA
I guess we'll all know soon enough.
Did you ask your mom about coming
to my party. My grand-kids will be
there and they'll want to meet you.
EXT. PLAYGROUND AT CHILDREN'S CANCER CENTER - DAY
Eva and Doug pull out of the drive way. Eva looks back at
Jimmy, smiles and waves goodbye from the car window.
Jimmy waves and gives her a thumbs up sign.
EVA
It breaks my heart to know they
won't grow older. They'll miss all
those wonderful moments, parties,
first dates, having a family.
DOUG
It's strange that we could want to
hurry and grow up when there's so
much of life to enjoy while we're
young. Of course when someone finds
someone as lovely as you, time just
stops.
MONTAGE:
Eva looks at the stones at Forest Lawn. Doug and Eva sit on
the beach watching the ocean. Doug drives home, looks over
to Eva who is asleep in the passenger seat. They pull into
the apartment complex and he carries her to the bedroom.
EVE closes her eyes, smiles and lays back on the pillow.
EXT. GARDEN HILLTOP BEHIND EVA'S APARTMENT COMPLEX - DAY
Eva, leaning heavily on a cane, looks to the parking lot
below. A group of people, carrying signs are standing around
a satellite-type dish. She notices that there seems to be
more people there and they're more agitated.
Eva, still looking in the direction of the parking lot calls
behind her in a whisper.
EVA
George...
There is a rustle of branches and dust begins swirling around
a very bright light behind her. The same light and dust we
saw in the first scene.
Eva, looks carefully at the crowd below to make sure no one
sees her. She straightens and the cane falls away.
From Eva's P.O.V. The camera tilts up to the roof where there
is a multitude of satellite dishes.
EVA (CONT'D)
George... are you there?
From another angle on the garden hilltop, we see a disabled
woman. She is sitting on the hillside playing with a bubble
maker.
At the sound of Eva's voice, the disabled woman scrambles to
her feet to listen.
EVA (CONT'D)
George, you were right. They know.
I saw the projections. The birth
and death rate won't balance. The
population will double within days.
We can't do this.
As the alien GEORGE talks to her, her facial expression
changes from a care worn cancer victim to a peacefully calm
and healthy individual.
GEORGE
It may be time for humanity to
evolve again Eva.
EVA
But the population will grow so
fast people will start going insane
and killing each other.
GEORGE
Take care of what your friend is
showing you. She has other motives
and has no faith in the collective
power of mankind. This is a grave
mistake. Are there not parts of
your world that are suffering from
war and genocide at this very
moment? This too is a disease.
EVA
You said the first step was walking
into the mist and that you would
teach me the other steps. I would
like to know the second one now
please?
GEORGE
Yes. You have noticed during your
illness that thoughts of the future
and past that were at first
intense, now have fallen away and
you, as Earthlings say, are living
one moment at a time? The past and
future are only electrical impulses
in your brain. This moment is
eternity. It is the only thing that
is really, always with us.
EVA
I understand my husbands love of
nature much more now. And when I
look at the stars I don't analyze
them. I see beauty.
GEORGE
This is the second step. Continue
this and it will calm you. You are
beginning to feel the harmony of
the universe. Soon you will be
ready to learn the third step. Pay
attention to your thoughts and
feelings.
EVA
Hmmm... George, this is a long
shot, but I'm giving a party and
I'd like you to attend.
George laughs out loud.
GEORGE
Eva. There is a reason you feel
well around this area when I'm
here. Humans are not ready to be
in contact with us yet. But, thank
you for the invitation. Maybe one
day that will happen.
The alien smiles broadly.
Eve walks out of the dust toward a crowd of people that has
gathered around Melody's dish.
She is visibly stronger. The circles under her eyes are
gone. She picks up the cane and nimbly walks down the hill.
The disabled woman, seeing Eva leave, goes closer to
investigate.
George slowly turns toward her and looks at her.
In fear, the woman runs down the path toward the Apartment
complex screaming something.
INT. OUTSIDE MANAGERS OFFICE - DAY
The disabled woman tries to get the managers attention, to no
avail.
MATCH CUT TO:
INT. SETI MEETING ROOM - DAY
Outside the window we see the huge Radio Telescope Dishes.
They are turning and constantly surveying the skies as the
group meets.
Eva is seated, slumped in one corner of a chair. As fellow
scientists come up to welcome her back one by one, she greets
them, then each time closes her eyes to rest.
Melody stands at the head of the table to speak
MELODY
We're happy to see Eva back with us
after a long fight with cancer.
The group applauds. Eva smiles from the corner of her chair.
MELODY (CONT'D)
The signal we picked up a couple of
days ago has been confirmed. It is
close to the apartments where Eva
and I live. Eva has contacted a
being on a craft and has a report
for us. Eva, the floor is yours.
The group reacts with much excitement. Eva looks very tired
and speaks from her chair.
EVA
It's true. We built these dishes
because we thought, due to the
distance of M class planets, that
no Intelligent life could visit us.
We are wrong. George, the alien I
have met said they have been using
warps in the space-time continuum
for centuries to leapfrog from
system to system.
Eva demonstrates with a piece of paper how travel from point
A to point B in warped space can be made much shorter that we
think.
SETI PERSON
Why did they choose this location
to land?
EVA
Because of me. They knew I was an
astrophysicist in the last stages
of cancer. Exactly what they
needed. They were also attracted
by the dishes Melody put on the
roof of the apartment complex.
SETI PERSON
So when do we go? I for one have a
million questions for these people.
EVA
We don't. George and his group can
manipulate energy and space-time.
If they don't want to be seen, they
won't be seen.
SETI PERSON
Okay, then can we give you a list
of questions?
EVA
Well... maybe later, but I think
for now we should play George's
game and go for the disease cure he
is offering.
SETI PERSON
Why would they want to give us a
cure? What do they want in return.
EVA
Once the cure is accepted we will
have an understanding of some sort.
We will be connected to this alien
race in some way and be no threat
to them.
SETI PERSON
Ah... "They come in peace." Isn't
that what we said to the Indians
when we arrived on their land?
EVA
From what I could tell they're a
much more advanced life form and if
they wanted to conquer us they
would have done it years ago. Well
like it or not, we play their way
or they're gone.
Eva stands an smiles broadly.
EVA (CONT'D)
...one more thing. You're all
invited to a party at my apartment.
Lets call it a celebration of life
All the SETI members quickly take out their Day-timers and
reach for a pen in their pocket protectors.
INT. EVA'S APARTMENT - DAY
The party-goers are gathering.
The grand `````kids sit on the floor with Jimmy. They have a
board game to entertain them, but are far mor interested in
finding about Jimmy's bald head.
GRANDCHILD 1
Why don't you have any hair?
GRANDCHILD2
Yeah, that looks funny.
JIMMY
I have Aplastic anemia in the final
stages. The doctors believe it has
metastasized to the actual bone.
Jimmy gets up to stand by Eva.
GRANDCHILD 1
What mata-sized?
GRANDCHILD 2
Dunno.
Jimmy tugs on Eva's sleeve and she leans down to hear what he
has to say.
JIMMY
Billy came in my dream an he sat on
the end of my bed. He said he
likes it there and he has other
kids to play with.
EVA
How did he look? Did you tell your
parents?
JIMMY
Yeah, I told them. He didn't look
the same.
EVA
What do you mean?
JIMMY
Well he was still wearing that old
hospital dress and his face was
kinda blurry but I know it was him.
I could feel it.
EXT. O.M.'S BUILDING, A CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY
As the last person enters the room, the doors are bolted
electronically.
Several doctors, scientists and business types sit around a
large table. O.M. is at the head. She rises to speak.
O.M.
I want to thank you all for coming.
We have research biologists,
Specialists in disease control and
CEO's from some of the major
pharmaceutical companies.
What I'm going to tell you will
seem impossible. Yet we now have
conclusive evidence that it is
true.
The group reacts verbally.
O.M. (CONT'D)
We have been watching the light
formation paths from the North now
for years. Many reports of
landings and crashes have been
investigated. All have been
reported as hoaxes until now.
She points to a map of Eva's apartment location.
O.M. (CONT'D)
A craft has landed here and has
been seen by several residents of
the area. They are frightened, of
course and have called the
authorities. The officials there
have been instructed to respond in
the normal fashion.
A DOCTOR
And what is the "normal fashion"?
O.M.
Don't go near it. It's a weather
balloon, military surveillance
craft, Airforce experiment gone
awry. Whatever they decide is best
at the time.
A DOCTOR
Who's investigating it? Has the
place been quarantined? We're
disease researchers... is there a
virus we need to check out?
O.M.
No, not a virus. But a cure for
all disease.
The group reacts with verbal hostility.
A DOCTOR
How can you know this? This is
ridiculous.
O.M.
I'll tell you how I can know this.
Because I have been contacted by
the alien bringing this cure to the
earth.
The group responds with mumbling. "She's nuts...
impossible... finally cracked.
One of the business men gets up and addresses O.M.
BUSINESS MAN
It does sound very crazy, I have to
admit. A bit out of this world.
A big laugh from all of the audience. As the man is about to
say more O.M. speaks.
O.M.
I don't think I need to explain to
any of you the threat this poses to
basic stability, not only regarding
the Earth population, but your
personal jobs and future.
The man stands there looking at O.M. With a look of
astonishment. No one is laughing now.
EXT. EVA'S APARTMENT - DAY
Melody and Eva are walking as quickly as Eva can, considering
her condition.
EVA
It's up in the garden. I've
communicated with it.
MELODY
That's impossible. How?
EVA
I don't know . It's like thoughts
just come into my head from this
thing. His name is George.
Melody laughs.
MELODY
How's the Chemo coming Eva? Are
they giving you extra medication?
EVA
I'm not taking Chemo and I know
what you're thinking. I want you
to come up there with me tonight
when nobody is around and meet
George.
MELODY
Yeah
INT. APARTMENT OFFICE, MANAGER - DAY
The Manager and the disabled woman leave the office.
EXT. APARTMENT PARKING LOT - DAY
The two of them walk up the parking lot past the dish and to
the garden where the woman saw the alien.
Sure enough, George is still there and doesn't disappoint
them.
They run back to safety.
EXT. STORAGE SHED - NIGHT
The disabled woman is taking all manner of weapons out of the
shed. Brooms, rakes, plungers, mops and anything else that
can be used to defend the property.
EXT. GARDEN BEHIND EVA'S APARTMENT COMPLEX - NIGHT
EVA
George says he can cure my cancer.
MELODY
How?
EVA
They've been studying us for a long
time... they can cure everything.
MELODY
I believe that. Is all that dust
from him?
EVA
Yeah, we just walk into it and for
some reason you understand exactly
what he's saying.
MELODY
Interesting... let's go.
They continue walking up the hill toward the spacecraft
hidden in the dust.
EVA
When George cures me, everybody
will understand the cure, like
collective consciousness.
My mind will start a union with
everyone in the world. Within days
there will be no deaths from cancer
or anything else. The Earth's
population will explode.
MELODY
The Hoerner model.
EVA
Which Hoerner model?
MELODY
The one published in 1950. And
after that, there was a severe
downward trend in the number of
babies being born.
EVA
Good. People are were more
responsible.
MELODY
Not quite. Disease killers kept the
population down... Right after the
stats came out?
EVA
You think these diseases are being
developed by O.M. And her group to
lower the surplus population?
MELODY
If our population explodes like
rats on a small island, we'll start
killing each other at an amazing
rate. You think we've got war now,
just wait.
EVA
Either way these are violent
deaths. Disease or war. Disease
is more controllable though. Isn't
it?
MELODY
Yeah. Ah, looks who's coming to
meet the Alien.
In the parking area below we see a group of armed people
marching toward the garden gate.
The two are silhouetted by the dust from George's spacecraft.
MELODY (CONT'D)
Looks like it's up to you Eva. You
know how George communicates.
You can accept the information, be
cured and within a few hours...
everyone on Earth will be cured,
not only of cancer, but whatever
else George decides to cure.
EVA
I'll doom the whole planet. I
won't. I won't do it.
She starts running toward the dust yelling.
EVA (CONT'D)
George. I can't do this. It will
kill the whole Earth. Do you
understand? I can't...
She comes to a dead stop in front of the dust. The dust
folds back in. We see the lights of the spacecraft dimming.
Below the people have gathered around the garden table,
weapons and all.
Melody and Eva boldly approach the group.
"You brought this thing on us!" How do we know it won't come
back now." There's no help... the military won't believe us.
We have to fight this thing alone." The crowd continues
shouting until Eva holds up her hands to stop them.
EVA (CONT'D)
Quiet... I'll explain.
She motions them to all sit down.
EVA (CONT'D)
They came here for my benefit. They
knew that I was in the last stages
of cancer.
Time lapses as she speaks.
EVA (CONT'D)
So I suppose the planet will have
to find another way to cure these
terrible illnesses, but in the
meantime we can rest assured that
posterity is in the hands of our
youth, as it should be, and not
some alien.
ONE OF THE CROWD
But you'll die.
EVA
Yes, we humans do that... You
know...
I have felt so tired lately that I
sleep most of the day. But since I
met George, the alien, I am not
tired and I feel a newness of
spirit and life that I've never
felt before.
The camera tilts up again to the dishes on the roof and then
beyond to the stars as Eva continues.
EVA (CONT'D)
...thanks George. But we humans
are problem solvers. It may take a
while, but when we solve this one,
it will be the right time for all
of us when the understanding of our
brief time here on Earth is part of
our everyday life instead of a
constant search.
INT. CITY SURVEILLANCE ROOM. - NIGHT
O.M. Watches the population screen as the births continue but
the deaths pick up again to the previous rate.
O.M.
You people can leave for the
evening. I'll take the watch
tonight.
She smiles at them, then looks down at the Death screen
fondly. The numbers are falling as rapidly as the Birth
screen now. Just as Eva has given her speech to the group.
EXT. GARDEN BEHIND EVA'S APARTMENT COMPLEX - NIGHT
Eva is saying goodbye to the group. Only Melody remains.
MELODY
This is very brave of you. Thank
you.
EVA
What...
MELODY
Okay... brave... or selfish. Eva,
how many people could benefit from
this. The children he could
save... the suffering... gone.
EVA
Wait a minute Melody, you're the
one who was talking about rats
killing each other on a small
island.
I am not the one to make this
decision, but I have to. What we
think will be for the best now will
turn to terrible suffering. Man's
ugly inhumanity to man will only
multiply and I am supposed to be
responsible for that?
MELODY
...but, what if it's not. What if
it's better, and like George says
"it is time". Don't you see?
You're giving up... and you are
leaving us all. Doesn't your family
mean anything? What about our
friendship. How can you do this?
EVA
Okay, I get it. This is all about
you. Well, it's not your decision
to make Mel. Thank God, it is not
your decision to make.
INT. EVA'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Doug is sitting in his favorite chair doing a crossword
puzzle. His eyes drift into nothingness, he shakes it off and
goes back to the puzzle.
DOUG
What's a four letter word for
undying affection?
Eva slowly walks into the room and sits on the ottoman in
front of him.
EVA
(whispers)
Doug, I have always loved you...
you have made my life complete.
Watch over our children and love
them as you always have. I'm going
to miss everyone. And, seeing that
little grand-daughter grow up.
DOUG
I don't know what we're going to do
without you. You're everything to
us. You have made my life worth
living and I couldn't ask for
anything more.
As Eva rounds the corner to the bedroom
EVA
Doug... Doug!
DOUG
Eva? What's wrong. What's the
matter?
EVA
It's bad. Really bad.
Doug helps her to the bed.
MONTAGE:
As we hear Doug's voice on the phone with Hospice we see
hands preparing morphine, white pills, a glass of water. Eva
waving the pills away. More conversation on the telephone.
The transition of night to day. A Hospice nurse sitting by
the bed. A drip connected to Eva's arm. The beeping sound of
the drip.
MATCH CUT TO:
Doug looks out the window toward where the spacecraft is.
HOSPICE NURSE
You'd better get some sleep. I'll
watch her and tell you if anything
happens.
Doug lies on the couch outside the bedroom... time lapses and
we see the nurses hand on his shoulder waking him.
HOSPICE NURSE (CONT'D)
I think it's time now.
Doug jolts awake and (rushes)goes to the bedroom.
He holds Eva's hand as she exhales for the final time. He
stares at her face as if in trance. The nurse disconnects
the drip and puts it in a white plastic bag.
HOSPICE NURSE (CONT'D)
I need to get the rest of the pills
and morphine before I go.
Doug nods, still holding Eva's hand.
The nurse finishes gathering the medication from the
refrigerator and returns to the bedroom.
She sees that Doug is gone and the bed is empty.
EXT. GARDEN BEHIND EVA'S APARTMENT COMPLEX - NIGHT
Doug is carrying Eva's body up the hill toward George's space
craft. Eva's nightgown flows in the night breeze. He
approaches the area where the ship should be, but does not
see anything.
DOUG
George. Please, please help me.
It can't be to late. I need you.
Please George, I beg you.
The craft and George are gone. Doug breaks down, falls to his
knees and lays Eva's body on the ground ever so gently. Tears
run down his face and he wipes them away with a flannel
sleeve.
Glowing behind him is the light from Melody's Observation
Room.
Doug slowly turns and from his P.O.V we pull focus to the
window with the computer screens lighting it. Doug looks at
Eva's body, the Space Craft area then back to the window, and
starts racing down the hill to the apartment complex.
Doug takes the stairs by twos, but when he gets to the door
it is locked. He yells.
DOUG (CONT'D)
Melody... let me in... now!
There is no answer. Doug looks up and down the hallway and
with one heavy boot, kicks the doorknob, breaks the molding
and the door flings open.
He races to the computer where Melody said they sent the
signal that George picked up. He looks at all the screens
and all the data on them. He sees that the death screen is
not dropping. He whispers to himself.
DOUG (CONT'D)
Just turn on the signal computer...
Just turn it on.
He starts punching buttons on all the machines. Suddenly,
something happens and the death rate drops off.
He looks out the window where there seems to be a disturbance
in the air. A cloud begins to envelope the area where he
laid Eva's body.
He rushes back down the steps and up the hill.
The alien is standing above Eva's body. Doug watches as
George moves his hands all over what seems to be an energy
field around Eva. A green light is coming from Georges hands
and we see Eva's body starting to move. Her color is coming
back.
Eva stirs, gasps for air and coughs. Doug is dumbfounded.
DOUG (CONT'D)
You've brought her back to life...
She said you could cure her cancer,
but this...
GEORGE
Eva? Are you ready for the third
step now?
EVA
I've been part of their egos and
stories. It's a trap for us
humans. But now I've seen the
Universe George. Like you told me.
We're not part of it we ARE it...
the Universe. (
GEORGE
Eva is our portal and we still want
her to let us help her and let the
world know what is possible. She
has much to offer and now has a
deep understanding of us.
DOUG
Will she be alright? I.. I'll take
her home now.
George smiles as he watches Doug and Eva walk down the garden
path. Doug looks back at the alien in gratitude. No words
are necessary.
INT. CITY SURVEILLANCE ROOM - NIGHT
O.M. Is leaning back in her chair watching the surveillances.
Suddenly there is a beeping sound and the Death screen tapers
off to nothing again.
Her hand clenches to a fist and pounds the table.
O.M.
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE....
THE END
