Repairing an “internet connection failed” condition on a Sony blu-ray or streaming media player.

Repairing an internet connection failed message on Sony Blu-ray player. My model is a BDP-S185 My

model of Blu-ray player is attached to the internet via Ethernet LAN cable, but the process may also

work well for wireless connected blu-ray players.

Step 1. Disconnect Ethernet cable from player and connect to laptop. Shut down the wireless

card/connection on your laptop if so equipped. Once the cable has been connected, open a web

browser and load a web page to make sure you have an internet connection that’s working.

Step 2. Open your command prompt and type after the prompt >ipconfig/all

Hit enter and a screen displaying your internet connection info will display on the screen. It will look like

the image below.

Keep this window open as you will need some of this information to manually set up your internet

connection in your blu-ray player.

Step 3: Plug the Ethernet cable back into your blu-ray player, go to the settings >internet

connection>manual setup>

You will have to enter all the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway from the IPconfig page. Since this

will be a static IP address you need to select one that won’t conflict with the other devices on the

network, try moving up or down about 5 to10 numbers and see if this works.

Step 4: Setting the DNS Server info, If it fails with the Ethernet connection, then it’s not a WiFi problem

and, as you discovered, it’s also not because of WPA. A DNS server problem is plausible since you get

connection errors to some services, but not others. There are many public DNS servers available. If

you’re still getting the errors, try testing with OpenDNS. The IPs for a couple of their servers are

208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 which you can see at the bottom right of their home page. I used

the openDNS servers which worked great on my blu-ray.

Step 5: After finishing up the manual set up, the last option is connect and test, it should say “ok” on

both the network and internet connections after final setup. Hit return and go back to the main menu

and try the various selections such as Netflix, Pandora or any of the other available streaming services

to see if it is working like it should now. You may have to go back and bump the IP address up or down a

number and retest. When everything is working fine then you need to restart the player and check to

see if your connection problem is cured.
