Final Exam Review
Three of the following questions will appear on your final exam. You must choose TWO
(2) of them to answer completely, in essay format. They will be worth 50 points each, for
a total of 100 points. Make sure you address all aspects of the questions.
1. Explain the evolution of the social movements of the 1960s. You must discuss at
least three separate movements, including the Civil Rights and Women’s
movements. How did they begin and how did they evolve over time? What were
their goals and strategies? How did they change over time? Did earlier
movement affect later movements, and if so, how? How did the Vietnam War
affect the movements, if at all?
2. Starting in 1968, America experienced numerous events leading to a sense of
disillusionment among people. Discuss at least three of these events, describing
how and why they created this disillusionment. Then, discuss at least three of the
various world-wide “backlashes” to previous American actions/policies that
occurred during the Carter and Reagan/Bush I administrations.
3. Explain American involvement in the Vietnam War from the end of WWII to
1968. Why did the U.S. role escalate? What were the obstacles to American
“victory” in Vietnam during this period? Next, discuss the Tet Offensive. How
and why was Tet a pivotal event in the war? How did it affect the U.S. role in the
war? What was Nixon’s strategy for Vietnam and its result? Finally, describe the
end of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Additionally, discuss the changing nature of
public opinion on Vietnam and the role it played in the war effort. In your
opinion, what lead to U.S. failure in Vietnam? Make sure to give specific
4. Discuss the election and presidency of Ronald Reagan. What were the factors at
work in America that led to his election in 1980? In 1984? Who was “Reagan’s
Majority” and why did they vote for him? What were the major accomplishments
and failures of his administrations? Make sure to discuss this in terms of both his
foreign and domestic policies. What are the ramifications of his decisions on our
society today? Additionally, discuss why you, personally, think Ronald Reagan
was a good or bad president. Make sure to give specific examples for each part of
5. Compare and contrast the scandals of the Nixon administration (Watergate), the
Reagan administration (Iran-Contra), and the Clinton administration (Paula Jones,
Whitewater and especially the Monica Lewinsky scandal). What was the media’s
role in each of these scandals? Discuss the effects of each scandal on the
president at the time. Explain why some presidents were affected negatively and
others were not. Make sure you explain each scandal fully.
6. What is globalization? Discuss when modern globalization began, the factors
contributing to it and the results in the U.S.
