          Ramona Quimby:Age 8 by Beverly Cleary

Goal: My students will read and make personal connections to
the story by responding to the attitudes and feelings of the
characters in the story through various lessons and activities.



CHAPTER 1 THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Objective: The students will recognize synonyms using
vocabulary words from Chapter 1. Eg. Presents of any kind had
been scarce while the family tried to save money. A. rare
B.desired C.plentiful D.unwanted

Procedure: I will read the chapter stopping to discuss
vocabulary words. We will do daily journal writing.
Journal Topic: Write about a special day you could hardly wait
for.

Assessment: WORD WIZARD worksheet on vocabulary words.
Students will volunteer to share their journals.

Technology: My students will create cover pages for their
journals using Microsoft Word.

CHAPTER 2 AT HOWIE’S HOUSE

Objective: My students will identify story elements. (Example
: character and setting)

Procedure: I will read aloud Chapter 2 to my class. We will
discuss the relationship between Ramona and Willa Jean. This
chapter takes place at the Kemp’ house. Journal Topic:Write
about a time you had to play with someone your didn’t like. Tell
about this person with naming the person. Tell why you didn’t
want to spend time with them and whether the experience
changed your original feelings.

Assessment: Students will complete a CHARACTER
SKETCHER worksheet on the book characters. They will have
time to volunteer and share their journals.

CHAPTER 3 THE HARD-BOILED EGG FAD

Objective: My students will develop an understanding of a
“fad”.

Procedure: After reading the chapter, each student will bring
an example of a fad from home. It can be a current fad or one
from their parents. (Parent Involvement). We will share these
with our classmates. (Oral Speaking).
Assessment: Students will be given credit for completing the
oral presentation. Complete ILLUSTRATOR worksheet.

CHAPTER 4 THE QUIMBY’S QUARREL

Objective: The students will practice oral reading with
expression.

Procedure: We will do round robin reading in groups of six.
Journal Topic: Write about the best meal you have ever had.
Where was it served? Who prepared it? What did you eat?

Assessment: I will monitor the student’s oral reading. They
will come prepared with the DISSCUSION DIRECTOR
worksheet. We will do three questions in class together first.

Technology: Bring a favorite recipe from home. Type these
out in the computer lab using Microsoft Word. We will put
these together for a class recipe book.

CHAPTER 5 THE EXTRA-GOOD SUNDAY

Objective: Students will use context clues to figure out the
meaning of a new word.

Procedure: Assign each student a word from the chapter.
Write the words on the board or chart. Have them use
context clues, dictionaries, and questioning to define their
word. They may work in pairs. Journal Topic: Imagine that you
vow to be perfect for an entire day, as Ramona had done.
Write about what you would have done on such a day.

Assessment: WORD FINDER

CHAPTER 6 SUPERNUISANCE

Objective: My students will learn to make predictions in this
chapter by answering questions. Eg. What do you think will
happen when Ramona returns to school?

Procedure: Read the chapter aloud and make predictions as we
go along using the PREDICTOR worsksheet. Journal Topic:
Ramona was embarrassed when she threw up in class. Write a
letter to Ramona to cheer her up.

Assessment: The students will complete a
COORESPONDANT/PREDICTOR worksheet.

CHAPTERS 7,8,9 THE PATIENT, RAMONA’S BOOK
REPORT, RAINY SUNDAY

Objective: We will finish the last three chapters.

Procedure: Journal Topics (for each chapter): Write a get-
well letter to Ramona. (Practice your cursive writing) Write a
short summary of a book you have read. Work with a partner
to make a list of things to do on a rainy day.
Assessment: Each student will go to the computer and take a
comprehension test over the book RAMONA QUIMBY: AGE 8
This is a multiple- choice test or they will do the unit
worsksheet. I use it as part of their grade.
