From IONS President and CEO Marilyn Mandala Schlitz, PhD
Humanity is now entering the rapids of accelerated change. Economic, environmental, and health challenges, along with the resource strains created by six billion people seeking a better life, have brought us to a crossroads. The collective shifts required are immense, but they also offer an incredible opportunity for us to evolve creatively—in beautiful and as yet unforeseen ways. At our 13th International Conference, “Toward a Global Shift,” we are excited to gather a unique collection of some of the most inspiring, thoughtful, and visionary people on the planet. Together, we’ll explore how to skillfully navigate personal, societal, and global change, marrying the emerging insights of science and new social innovations with the depth perspectives of our wisdom traditions. A collective shift toward greater consciousness, health, and wholeness begins with each of us as we expand our beliefs and conceptions about the world and our place in it. Through those individual shifts, a new story of human potential is evolving. The ability to seed positive collective fields will be essential for the years ahead. So we are especially pleased this year to go deeper into scientific and social experiments to better understand how communities of consciousness can facilitate healing and action. We welcome those of you who have pioneered with us as well as those who will be coming for the first time; Together, we can bring fresh perspectives to bear on the world we love and serve. Warmly,

About the Conference
“Toward a Global Shift” is calling forth wisdom from the four corners
of the earth and from diverse sectors of society to build a powerful field for positive collective change. Together, we will create a living experiment in personal, social, and global transformation. You’ll hear from fascinating scientists, inspiring spiritual leaders, and social entrepreneurs, as well as from the many brilliant individuals like yourself who will join in our innovative group explorations to create new frameworks for our shared future. This conference takes an interdisciplinary and integrative approach to change that will, in the tradition of the noetic sciences, weave together research experiments, groundbreaking ideas, passionate performances, transformative personal experiences, and community ritual. Through our main-stage events and breakout sessions, our goal is to bring the wisdom gained in our small groups back into the entire conference community to seed dialogues and deepen our experiential journey.
Together we will explore a variety of evocative questions:
•
•
•
•
•
How do we form our beliefs? How might we engage more effectively with beliefs different from our own? What qualities do we see emerging in our global culture today? What is being born now? In what ways can we dream together to bring a new culture into being that is healthy, sustainable, inclusive, and whole? What practices are essential for us as individuals and as members of our communities during this time of radical shift? How can we take the ideas and actions of our local communities and use them to help us seed the future we want?
4
Our goal is to create one of the most memorable and rejuvenating conferences of your life—complete with music, celebration, laughter, and practices to awaken a new way of being.

PT1 Working with Fields of Consciousness: Practical Strategies for Group Leaders—Chris Bache For reasons we don’t yet understand, the tendency to synchronize is one of the most pervasive drives in the universe. —Steven Strogatz, Sync Fields of consciousness spring up whenever we engage in sustained collective activities. Knowing this, how can we accelerate and deepen this natural process? How do we harness the power of these fields to teach, problem-solve, create, or heal? In this workshop, we will explore the dynamics of collective intelligence in group settings. Learn practical, hands-on strategies forged through 30 years of classroom experience: opening and closing fields, strengthening fields, visualization and meditation exercises, and managing episodes of spontaneous resonance. Chris M. Bache, PhD, has been a professor of religious studies for three decades, serving as adjunct faculty at CIIS and as director of transformative learning at IONS. PT4 Into the Heart of It: Navigating Humanity’s Rite of Passage—Anodea Judith Humanity is entering a rite of passage from our planetary adolescence to our future adulthood, from an operating system based on the love of power to one based on the power of love. This requires an internal shift from ego-based consciousness to an awakening of the global heart. The journey of initiation we will take together combines ritual, storytelling, poetry, and music, to ignite the heart within and carry the torch to the heart of the world. Be prepared to laugh, cry, dream, and hope as we navigate the perils
and possibilities of our time toward an inspiring vision of the future. Anodea Judith, PhD, is founder of Sacred Centers and author of the award-winning book Waking the Global Heart, as well as numerous books and videos on Eastern and Western psychology. PT6 Navigating the Great Shift: Unleashing the Creative Force of Mind and Spirit—Bruce Lipton A renaissance in the field of cellular biology has led to the discovery of the molecular mechanisms that bridge the mind-body connection. These newly defined pathways reveal how our thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs create the conditions of our body and our place in the world. Through an understanding of how consciousness interfaces with biology, we are empowered to evolve from passive victims to responsible cocreators. In the process, we are offered the key to personal growth and global transformation. Lipton’s animated and illustrated seminar provides knowledge that will enable you to take back creative control over your own life and contribute to the planet’s higher evolutionary destiny. Bruce H. Lipton, PhD, bestselling author of The Biology of Belief, is a cellular biologist and former medical school professor. His pioneering research on cloned stem cells at Wisconsin’s and Stanford’s schools of medicine presaged the revolutionary field of epigenetics, the new science of how environment and perception control genes.
PT7 The Ancient Wheel of Life: Rhythmic Cycles of Personal and Collective Change—David Patten When nature was revered, we engaged directly with our surroundings for clues of change and duration. Sacred Storytelling— Luisah Teish and Elena Avila Our ancestors sat beneath the full moon around a fire and explained the sacredness of life, nature, and spirit through the art of storytelling. Their stories provide the guidelines for inner peace, spiritual education, and communal action. The Aztecs told their stories through poetry that was born from a flowering need to express their soul. In the African Diaspora, myths and stories are housed in the body of cowrie shells, stones, seeds, and bones. When these are cast, the voice of the Divine is heard, and the community contemplates the mysteries of creation, applying to contemporary life the wisdom that emerges. Luisah Teish is a storyteller, performer, ritual priestess, and author of several books and articles on African and African American spiritual culture and feminist myth. She has been awarded a PhD in spiritual therapeutics. Teish is an initiated elder (Iyanifa) in the Ifa/ Orisha tradition of the West African Diaspora and holds a chieftaincy title (Yeye’woro) from the Fatunmise Compound in Ile Ife, Nigeria. Elena Avila: please see bio on page 17 The Temple Awards for Creative Altruism are presented to outstanding altruists whose lives and work embody the inspirational light of unselfish service motivated by love. In this plenary session, we will honor this year’s winners and hear about their award-winning work.
Toward a Sustainable Global Future—Edgar Mitchell Understanding the causes and impacts of our current global situation as well as our responsibilities and possible courses of action will allow us to help provide for our progeny a future that is sustainable. We will uncover the reasons why our planetary civilization is on an unsustainable course and discover what are the most urgent areas for improvement. (Edgar Mitchell: please see bio on page 9)
From the Heart of Africa: Healing the Planet One Story at a Time—Coumba Touré Celebrate with stories of inspiration and transformation from the heart of Africa. In this session, Coumba models the true meaning of global citizenship as she navigates between ancient wisdom traditions and modern Western worldviews. In this delightful dialogue, you will hear the stories of African social entrepreneurs and dedicated change-makers. (Coumba Touré: please see bio on page 18)
From Vision to Action— Marilyn Mandala Schlitz This will be a time to reflect together on what we have experienced in the past few days. What moved you? What new ideas were generated for you? How have you gained new insights into your worldviews, beliefs, and ways of engaging in the world? What are your next steps to deepen your personal transformation and that of the broader society? How can IONS support you in that process? (Marilyn Mandala Schlitz: see bio on page 12)

Inner Engineering: Realize the Ultimate Potential Within—Sadhguru Of all human pursuits, striving to transform oneself into a higher possibility is considered the most sacred. It is this pursuit that fulfills the purpose of being human, and it is this pursuit that brings well-being to all life. “Inner Engineering” is an opportunity to know your true inner nature as a peaceful, utterly blissful human being. Come learn more about this ancient inner technology. Sadhguru, a yogi and profound mystic of our time, is a visionary humanitarian and a prominent spiritual leader. A contemporary guru rooted as strongly in mundane and pragmatic matters as he is in inner experience and wisdom, Sadhguru works tirelessly toward the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of all. Sadhguru speaks at some of the world’s most prominent international forums, including the World Economic Forum and the United Nations Millennium Peace Summit.
PS1 Indigenous Wisdom and Contemporary Challenges: Curanderismo in the 21st Century—Elena Avila Curanderismo, the traditional folk medicine of Mexico, is based on the belief that the body, soul, spirit, and emotions have equal importance and are intertwined in maintaining health. The key to this approach is the principle Corazon cura Corazon—Heart heals Heart. Integrating Curanderismo with Western medicine, Elena will demonstrate limpias, (spiritual cleansings), platicas, (heart-to-heart talks) and the use of soul retrieval for the treatment of susto (fright). Please bring pictures of yourself when young, of ancestors that have passed, of parents, children, and other loved ones. Power objects, drums, and rattles are also welcome for this experiential session. (Elena Avila: please see bio on page 17)
In this session, Stephen Dinan will lay out an inspiring strategic roadmap for the next decade, showing how dozens of major initiatives can work together across thousands of local groups to accelerate our evolution as a species. Learn how changes in media, leadership, sustainability, peace, health, and economics can work in tandem with scientific and political changes to create the larger shift we’ve been intuiting. His presentation and discussion builds upon three years of dialogues with leading luminaries and harvests some of their best solutions. You’ll have time to contribute your own ideas as well as spending time in groups to explore your unique contribution to a global shift. Stephen Dinan is the founder of the Shift in Action program, author of the book Radical Spirit, and cofounder of the Summer of Peace and the PartnerShift Alliance. He has an Internet radio show on VoiceAmerica and is a regular blogger at HuffingtonPost.com.

PS4 Technologies for Inner Well-Being—Sadhguru No other generation has been as comfortable as we are today, but we are still not any more joyful than those who have lived before us. It doesn’t matter how much we fix the external aspects of our lives; the basic quality of human life—of being joyful or miserable—remains the same. The way we are within is the way we experience our life. Just as we have a science and technology for understanding and creating external situations through our desires and choices, an inner science and technology is available to us to create our inner situation as well—a technology to take charge of one’s ultimate destiny. Join Sadhguru for a guided meditation and an entry into this ancient technology for spiritual evolution and healing. (Sadhguru: please see bio on page 20)
the world to contribute to decisionmaking and problem-solving in their respective societies. In this session, Touré shares African wisdom stories and traditions based on the indigenous value system. Learn about trauma, cycles of victimhood and violence, and the tendency for these to be passed on unless conscious choices are made to break those cycles. We strongly encourage you to offset the global-warming impact of an average attendee’s ground and air travel, accommodations, and waste. Simply check the “offset” box on the registration form to take real, effective action. A contribution of $12 per attendee assumes an average of 30 miles of driving, 1,740 miles of air travel, 3 nights in the hotel using EPA averages for electricity, and 4.4 pounds of waste per day. Thank you for your environmental stewardship and your ongoing commitment to the Institute of Noetic Sciences. For more information, please visit www.nativeenergy.com.
