Our fourth year in Santa Fe promises to provide an outstanding experience for everyone attending -
including compelling CLE topics and presentations, lively cocktail
parties, a special museum tour, a cooking school and the
presentation of our annual awards at the Saturday evening dinner.
This isn’t your usual CLE by any stretch of the imagination. It’s
informative, funny, thought-provoking and filled with information
delivered by prominent speakers in a way that will have you talking
about it long after you’ve pulled yourself away from the gorgeous
Santa Fe surroundings.

5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. - Opening Reception
Grab your name tag and head to the 5th floor of the Eldorado hotel. You’ll find familiar and
new faces, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a beautiful Santa Fe skyline to start your TEX-
ABOTA CLE Roundup. Sante Fe casual dress. Dinner at your leisure.
Friday, June 17
8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon (approx.) - Friday morning CLE program
Eat breakfast at 7:00 a.m. with other CLE attendees while your spouse/guest sleeps in for a
little while. Grab a cup of coffee and head to the meeting room for the first exciting day of
presentations. Speakers’ days and times will be determined closer to the event.
1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Georgia O’Keeffe Museum & Georgia O’Keeffe Research
Center Tour
One of the most significant artists of the 20th century, Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) was
devoted to creating imagery that expressed what she called “the wideness and wonder of the
world as I live in it.” The Research Center has an environment of quiet contemplation and study,
echoing the atmosphere of Georgia O’Keeffe’s houses in Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch. The
research library includes the libraries O'Keeffe maintained at her Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch
houses, archives with a wide variety of documents and correspondence pertaining to O'Keeffe,
and all of the personal property O'Keeffe owned at the time of her death in 1986, such as artist
materials and found objects. Museum is right behind the Eldorado Hotel.
6:00-7:30 p.m. - Cocktail Party at the home of Robin & Lela Gibbs
Houston ABOTA member Robin Gibbs and his wife, Lela, open their beautiful home at 421
Camino Manzano, Santa Fe, NM 87505 to our group for a lovely cocktail reception.
Transportation will be provided. Santa Fe Casual dress. Dinner at your leisure.

2:00 - 5:00 pm. - Santa Fe School of Cooking
Roll up your sleeves and join the rest of the class in making your own homemade tamales at
116 West San Francisco Street Santa Fe, NM 87501. Don’t sample too much, as dinner’s just
around the corner, back at the hotel.
6:30 - 10:00 pm. - Cocktails and TEX-ABOTA Annual Dinner & Awards
Presentation
Join fellow attendees for cocktails for an hour, then head into the Eldorado Hotel dining
room for open seating at the TEX-ABOTA Annual Dinner. We’ll present our prestigious
Lawyer of the Year, Jurist of the Year and Champion of the 7th Amendment awards right after
dinner. Santa Fe casual.

TEX-ABOTA CLE Roundup - Santa Fe Speakers - 2011
Jim Perdue, Jr. – Houston - One of the most successful young plaintiffs’ lawyers in
Houston – an acorn that did not fall far from the tree. He is has written several law
review articles with footnotes and is consistently graded as the top speaker at TTLA
seminars.
Steve McConnico – Austin - A “trial lawyer’s trial lawyer” – on everybody’s list of top
lawyers in Texas. Has tried over 200 cases to jury verdict. Cases tried include: breach
of fiduciary duty, theft of trade secrets, probate, breach of contract, environmental,
election law, class action, business tort, oil and gas, personal injury, and professional
malpractice defense. Past-president of TEX-ABOTA.
Richard “Racehorse” Haynes – Houston - Young, up-and-coming criminal lawyer.
Famous for numerous cases including the “Smith & Wesson divorce” defense of Vickie
Daniel, accused of murdering her husband, who was speaker of the Texas House of
Representatives and son of a former governor. Successfully defended multimillionaire
Cullen Davis, who was charged with murdering his stepdaughter and his estranged
wife’s boyfriend, and attempting to kill his wife. Davis was widely believed to be the
wealthiest man to have ever been tried for murder in the United States.
Harry Widmann - Metairie, Louisiana
Will be President of National ABOTA at time of seminar. He is a good speaker, but not
as good as Craig Lewis. Promises to, “Do the best I can with what I’ve got.”
Charles Babcock – Dallas/Houston
Selected as one of Texas Lawyer's "25 Greatest Texas Lawyers of the Past Quarter-
Century." Defended Oprah Winfrey in defamation case filed against her by Texas
cattlemen in Amarillo. Successfully represented Justice Sharon Keller, presiding judge
of the Texas County Criminal Appeals, in efforts to remove her from office.
Represented Supreme Court Justice Hecht on ethics charges. Considered one of the
top First Amendment lawyers in the United States.
Hon. Craig Eiland – Galveston
Has represented the Galveston area in the Texas Legislature since 1994. Honored as a
Legislative Superstar by Texas Watch and repeatedly chosen by Texas Monthly as one
of the "Ten Best Legislators." An active trial lawyer and a member of ABOTA
Jeff Eller – Austin - Award-winning television and radio reporter. Served in the Clinton
White House as Director of Media Affairs. At the White House, oversaw media relations
and daily staged presidential news conferences, administration interviews and other
major media events. Presently vice chairman of Public Strategies Inc., where he
orchestrates the media, lobbying and communications strategies for leading
corporations in high-profile crisis situations, including Firestone in their tire litigation,
Eddie DeBartolo and the 49ers during the corruption trial of Louisiana governor Edwin

Edwards, and the TVA when a retaining wall failed dumping over a billion gallons of coal
ash into the Tennessee River.
Barry Richard - Tallahassee, Florida - Listed in National Law Journal as one of "the
100 most influential lawyers in America" and was chosen as Lawyer of the Year in 2006.
Argued over 250 appellate cases nationally and has obtained successful appellate
decisions in cases involving some of the most significant constitutional questions and
some of the largest judgments in Florida history. Most notably, represented President
George W. Bush in the 2000 presidential election litigation. Managed 46 lawsuits and
personally argued several critical cases on behalf of President Bush.
Hon. Robert Junell – Midland - Appointed District Judge for the Western District of
Texas in 2003 by President Bush. Prior to taking the bench, served in the Texas
Legislature and was Chairman of Appropriations for five sessions. Was consistently
named as one of the top and most effective legislators. Prior to being elected to the
legislature, was a successful trial attorney in El Paso and San Angelo representing both
plaintiffs and defendants. One of two United States District Judges to have attended J.
T. Hutchison Jr. High.
Kathy Snapka - Corpus Christi - Lead counsel in landmark cases involving
crashworthiness, negligence and pharmaceuticals which have resulted in substantial
recoveries for her clients, including several eight figure verdicts. Tried a Fen-Phen case
which resulted in a 56.5 million dollar verdict. Tried one of only 5 cases where the
plaintiff prevailed in the Vioxx litigation. Nationally recognized speaker on trial advocacy
and product liability issues. Named one of the Top 50 Women Lawyers in Texas. Past-
president of TEX-ABOTA.
Eric Nichols – Austin - Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Justice for Texas Attorney
General. In charge of prosecutions of violent crime, crimes against children, white-
collar crime, and cyber crimes. Recently lead prosecutor in cases where men have
been tried for sexual assault of children at the YFZ Ranch in Eldorado, Texas and
obtained convictions on every case. Next will prosecute Warren Jeffs, "President and
Prophet, Seer and Revelator" of the FLDS.”
Hon. Suzanne Covington – Austin – Served as judge of the 201st District Court in
Austin from 1995 through 2010. Recognitions by the Austin Bar include the naming of
the Judge Suzanne Covington Pro Bono Service Award in her honor. She began her
legal career as a Legal Aid attorney, with DNA-People’s Legal Services, in Arizona, later
serving with Greater Boston Legal Services, Legal Aid Society of Central Texas, and as
Director of the Children’s Rights Clinic at The University of Texas School of Law.

double/king room rate is $229* (+ state & local tax). All nights to be paid by you upon check-out.
