I would update the nim−master to ML4 before creating the lpp_source (at least you´ll have to upgrade
bos.rte.install before anyway) and before creating the spot in any case.
"(using an idea from this list, break the rootvg mirror and install on one disk, if it fails remirror from the old
disk − apologies because I can't remember who to thank for this idea)"
I am 70% sure this wont work. If you have rootvg with hdisk0+1 mirrored and break the mirror and take out
one disk, you wont be able to boot from this disk anymore.
use alt_disk_install instead:
unmirrorvg rootvg hdisk1
#remove sysdumplv on hdisk1
reducevg rootvg hdisk1
alt_disk_install −C hdisk1
bootlist −m normal hdisk0
then you can screw up hdisk0 with MLs and so on and can always boot from hdisk1 to get the old state
btw. today disk is so cheap that I dont use installp_bundles anymore for separate ML.
I build a separate lpp−source and spot for every ML I want to serve through nim.

OK, the apparent path I'm going to take is as follows:
− create an installp_bundle of AIX 5.2 ML4 on the NIM master (I have CD's being shipped − 5.2 ML5 as an
install package is nonexistent
apparently))
− create the SPOT for ML4
− Update the NIM master to ML4 (using an idea from this list, break the rootvg mirror and install on one disk,
if it fails remirror from the old disk − apologies because I can't remember who to thank for this idea)
− create an installp_bundle of ML5
Re: Quick NIM question 1
AIX−L: Re: Quick NIM question
− create SPOT for ML5
− update NIM master to ML5
− update the installp_bundle and SPOT of ML4 to ML5 (? not sure about this part, I may just leave ML4
intact and create a new installp_bundle and SPOT for ML5 just for updates)
− install the p5's with the new ML4 (or ML5?) NIM files − if ML4 then update to ML5
The p5's are different in that they don't take the base 5.2 install, has anyone else dealt with this kind of
situation before? I have always seen the case where the new hardware still used the current, base O/S...
so having to install hardware at a particular ML is somewhat foreign to me.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

Little off of the NIM topic, but here is some info:
If you give IBM a call, they'll ship out the latest 5.2 ML05 CD set to you if you have a contract. I have pre
ML01 base CD's that have bugs which make installation a pain. I explained to them that this was the case and
the latest should be on my desk today. That way you have a complete set that installs all in one shot instead of
applying the base then the ML's and possibly missing something.

Use a complete CD set for the base and drop the ML package into it. The last CD set I have is ML3, but, there
are some pre−ML1's floating around as well. You will need some 0 level prereqs (ie 5.2.0.0) to install, and ,
that's the easiest way to make sure you have most of them. You need them for rte installs but not upgrades.

Another question I have is whether I should use the maintenance package for ML2 −> ML5 that I downloaded
the other day, or if I actually need the ML0 −> ML5 to create the lpp_source and all...

you don't need the ML5 version AIX CDs (but it never hurts to have them).
after you've upgraded your master to ML5 (or ML4), make a copy of your 5.2.0.0 lpp_source (just copy the
directory then create a new lpp_source ressource pointing to the new directory) and upgrade it to ML5 (or
ML4) using bffcreate (followed by a "nim −o check name_of_your_lpp"). then create a new spot from that
upgraded lpp_source. you should then be able to install your new machines with these new ressources.
if you want details on how to do each step you can check out the nim section of the aix installation guide:
