When we welcome the child, we welcome the family
21 July 2011
Dear Parents, Grandparents, Parishioners and Children,
The last day of term is here again and what an end to the week we have had. The children have enjoyed
trips to Saltwell Park, the Sea Life Centre and Discovery Museum. All educational visits are exciting at
this time of year but I particularly enjoy children bringing their experiences back into the classroom. It
was lovely to hear Year 1 & 2 children reading recounts from their visit to the Sea Life Centre, Y5/6
pupils talking at length about their visit to Saltwell Park and Y3/4 children discussing the artefacts
from the Discovery Museum that linked to their World War 2 topic.
Today is also a celebration in that our Year 6’s move to pastures new – this should be seen as a great
achievement and we will miss them all. Haven’t they been wonderful this year? Jade, Grace, Sophie,
Josh, Brad, Jack, Eve and Kyran – we will miss you - but remember as I’ve said before ‘Once a Heart’
always a Heart!’. They have all developed in so m many ways and academically I know this is just the start
of great things to come!
Goodbye & Welcome
Today, we say goodbye to Mrs Leonard, Miss Osborn, Mrs Knox and Mrs Kain. We thank them for their
excellent contribution to our school community during their time at Sacred Heart. They have all been a
great asset and will be missed by parishioners, children, parents and governors. All three received a
great applause in assembly today – thank you girls and good luck in your new jobs.
At the same time I am delighted to announce that we have made new appointments across the school.
Firstly, our new Y5/6 teacher Mrs Dawn Scott who has spent all of yesterday and today getting used to
our school – will start in September for the new academic year. Mrs Scott was not involved in the first
round of interviews in July in which no appointment was made. Mrs Scott was successful in our second
set of interviews. The governors are determined to have only the best teachers at Sacred Heart and
thus Mrs Leonard’s replacement took some time. Mrs Julie Greenslade replaces Mrs Kain and has already
experience of administration on a number of schools. Finally, we welcome Mrs Quenet who is our new
learning support teacher from September. We wish all three the best of luck in their new roles and I’m
sure they will be welcomed by all our wonderful parents.
Today was also a chance to watch our Y5/6 class participate in what was a visually wonderful leavers’
assembly. The children performed so well and there was hardly a dry eye in the hall. Mrs Leonard
organised this assembly and the children responded so well. Thank you to the Friends for supplying the
leavers’ gifts. It was also a chance to say thank you to so many different groups of people who make our
school the success that it is. They included our Y6’s, all pupils, parents, governors, staff & pre-school,
helpers in school (Mrs Carter, Mr Fennelly, Mrs Arnell, Miss Phipps, Mrs Parker, Mrs Ward, Mrs Brough,
Mrs Stewart), All Friends, All governors, teachers, support staff, Miss White and finally Mrs Leonard,
Mrs Kain & Miss Osborn for all your efforts - Thank you everyone!!!!!!
Gold Book Assembly
The Gold Book assembly seems to get bigger every term – but the most important thing is that all
children received recognition of their achievements throughout the term. All trophies were engraved
ready for today’s assembly and I am delighted to announce that Grace and Kyran are our 2011 pupils of
the year. This Summer I had the pleasure of making three choices (due to being absent for much of the
year) which represented choices for the three terms. I spoke with all teachers to select pupils that
worked hard and have shown great progress in class.
Can I thank the Friends for contributing all the prizes and for the parents for attending in their
masses. The Friends raised over £200 which will go towards Autumn rewards for the pupils.
Reception Slide Show
Once again it was a great turn out for the slide show last week. Parents looked back on the children’s
first year of school (a few tears I think).
Thank you to all the Buddies who have helped throughout the year, they had a great afternoon last
Friday making pizzas! Yum
Thank you all who attended yesterday’s graduation ceremony. It was an emotional rollercoaster from
start to end. All children did so well. Congratulations go to Ella, Milly, Quincy, Amelia, Ava, Sassy, Lucy,
Luke, Ellie, Nancy & Jacob who move into Reception next year. Thank you all parents and grandparents
that packed the hall to see the graduation today and Gill, Anne & Lisa for organising this event. Little
Heart’s is two years old today and continues to make great strides across the school and local
community. We are officially the most popular pre-school in the inner west!!! The graduation cake was
also wonderful – thanks girls.
September - Reception and Y1
The arrangements for children entering and leaving school from September have not changed from last
weeks meeting. All children are to go to the main school playground at the beginning of the school day
and parents will collect them from this yard at the end of the day. Children will come down the ramp
from the Foundation garden to be collected initially. Many thanks for all your support in this matter.
Last Stop for the ’Walking Bus’
It is with regret that the ‘Walking Bus’ will cease to operate from September 2011. Mrs Williams, Mrs
Young and Mr McHugh would like to say a huge thank you to all the children who have travelled with the
‘Walking Bus’ whatever the weather over the past 3 years. We are extremely proud of your dedication
and commitment to this fantastic initiative promoting sustainable travel.
Thank you all parents to responding to our annual questionnaire – we had nearly 50% of parents & pupils
responding. We will endeavour to listen and make changes that you want to our school – I promise.
Well Done Toni
Congratulations and well done to Toni who had her charity stall at the summer fair last week. She was
raising money for a little boy (Ben) who needs special treatment for a rare cancer. The total from the
fair was £311.70 and finally with extra donations, £400.00!

A huge thanks to Miss Phipps our Foundation volunteer who has been helping in school for the last 10

resources in the classroom. We wish her well for the future.
