The University Governance Review Committee will meet on Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. in
Education 125. The committee will begin consolidating governance-related
recommendations from faculty, professional, and support staff made during the spring
2002 semester.
The Scientists of Color will have their first meeting of the year on Wednesday, Sept. 4,

Homecoming Parade Entrants Can Receive $$ - Student organizations wishing to
participate in the Saturday, Oct. 19, ENMU Homecoming Parade must register by
Monday, Oct. 7. Each organization interested in building a float and entering the parade
may apply to receive $100 in assistance funds on a first-come, first-served basis. Receipts
for expenses incurred by the floats receiving checks may be requested by the Alumni
Affairs office if deemed necessary. Organizations can apply at the Alumni Affairs office
located in the Administration Building beginning Monday, Sept. 30. Deadline to apply is
Monday, Oct. 7. Organizations can pick up their checks in the Alumni Office in Room
201 beginning October 14.
The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 19 at Abilene and Third, goes north to First
Street, and west on First Street to the ENMU Campus. This year’s theme is “Back in the
Day: Homecoming Traditions.”

Women’s Cancer Support Group - Sister Strength, Women's Cancer Support Group,
meets the First Thursday of the month at the First United Methodist Church, 14th and
Sycamore streets in Clovis from 7-8:30 p.m. The support group is open to women
dealing with their own cancer diagnosis or that of a loved one. (Group meets in Room
#20; enter building on east side of the church.)
Senior Meal Program Needs Volunteers - The Community Services Center Senior
Meal Site of Portales is in need of volunteers to distribute homebound meals. The home-
delivered meals route is generally divided among three volunteers. Volunteers would
assist in packaging and delivering meals. This would require two hours per day (10-noon)
Monday through Friday, excluding holidays and bad-weather days. These meals are
distributed to the elderly, disabled, and homebound that in some cases eat only one meal
a day. At this time, there are approximately 75-90 individuals that the meal site delivers
to on a daily basis. Mileage is reimbursed at .25 per mile. The Community Services
Center meal site is currently looking for on-campus organizations, that might be willing

Student Appointed to Parents Anonymous - Causey/Portales resident Sheila Stokes
Pettingill has been appointed to the Parents Anonymous, Inc., National Parent Leadership
Team (NPLT). The mother of three children and a student of Eastern New Mexico
University, Pettingill joins a diverse group of men and women from around the country
who are members of Parents Anonymous groups in their hometowns.
“I am very proud to be a member of the Parents Anonymous National Parent Leadership
Team,” says Pettingill. “It provides me with great opportunity to help others who might
be struggling with family-related issues. I have faced many daunting challenges and I’m
overcoming obstacles. I am eager to share my experiences and new-found knowledge
with other parents.”
Parent Leadership is a core component of Parents Anonymous Inc., the nation’s oldest
child abuse prevention and family strengthening organization. Its concept encourages and
supports Shared Leadership, which is a mutually respectful partnership between parents
and professionals in the delivery of family support services.
“We are delighted that Sheila has agreed to serve on the National Parent Leadership
Team, “ says Dr. Lisa Pion-Berlin, president and CEO of Parents Anonymous, Inc., “She
has shown excellent leadership skills, is very caring and has proven herself to be

Founded in 1970, Parents Anonymous, Inc., leads a diverse network of accredited
organizations that implement the Parents Anonymous program across the country.
Headquartered in Claremont, Calif., the organization is a resource for strengthening
thousands of families each year through weekly group meetings which are co-led by
parents and professionally-trained facilitators, and are free of charge to participants.

Webpage Directory Access - With the inauguration of the new website, units will now
have control over the content, maintenance, and development of certain levels of their
website. ENMU faculty or staff may request directory access for the unit that they are
charged with updating. Send emailed requests to Webmaster@enmu.edu with the words
“Directory Access Request” in the subject line. When these requests are received, the
Webmaster will contact the area executive administrator, who must approve all requests
for directory access. Once approval is given, directory access will be set up and the staff
member will receive an email confirmation, with a directory password. At that point,
pages in that directory can be changed or added, so long as the changes comply with the
web policies. Informational workshops will be offered about how to use webpage
templates and comply with web policies. If there are any questions about this process,

stories for the children to act out and embellish.

Dr. Michael Shaughnessy and Bill Gaedke have had "An Interview with Sonia Nieto:
About Multiculturalism" accepted for publication in the North American Journal of
Psychology.
Dr. Michael Shaughnessy, Dr. Scott Johnson and Dr. Fida Mohammed (now at
SUNY, Oneonta ) have had a paper published .
Dr. Manuel Varela, assistant professor of biology, presented a research paper at the
American Society for Microbiology (ASM) conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, this
summer. The paper, co-authored by graduate student Jonathan Burgos, was titled
"Multiple Antibiotic Resistant Enteric Bacteria from Dairy Farm Topsoil." The paper
drew significant interest, and a summary of the work was highlighted in the ASM
conference press room.
The College of Business is very pleased to announce that Dr. John Humphreys,
assistant professor of management, has had a business case published in the July issue of
the Harvard Business Review. The Harvard Business Review has a long and
distinguished record of publishing challenging scenarios, in the form of business cases,
which are used internationally in academic and professional education. Dr. Humphreys
adds to this prestigious collection with his case titled “The Best of Intentions,” which
addresses ethical dilemmas when dealing with issues of workplace diversity.
