The British Library Application Profile for Sound

[Archival Sound Recordings 2 Project]

Title: The British Library Application Profile for Sound [Archival Sound Recordings 2 project]

Creator: Chris Clark, based on BLAP v 1.01 by Robina Clayphan

Contributors: Antony Gordon, Corine Deliot, Michelangelo Staffolani

Date: 2008-09-19

Identifier:

Description: This document lists all the elements and element refinements (terms) that can be used when creating metadata according to the BL

Application Profile for Sound [Archival Sound Recordings 2 project]. Recorded sounds typically comprise performances of works with no

components (a recorded song), works with components (a play in several acts and scenes) or the components in isolation (excerpts from

works). The cardinality of certain structural terms in this profile is therefore conditional. The proposed use for this application profile is to enable

standardised conversions of legacy catalogue data and the creation of new metadata corresponding to sound recordings selected for inclusion

in the Archival Sound Recordings 2 Project. This profile is based on BLAPSoundv1.3 used for the Archival Sound Recordings 1 project.

BLAPSoundASR2-v0-1 2008-09-16. First draft based on editing BLAPSoundv1.3 used for the Archival Sound Recordings Project 1

and the incorporation of dc:contributor refinements.

BLAPSoundASR2-v0-2 2008-09-17. Feedback from Antony Gordon. Addition of definitions for conductor, editor, photographer and

producer. Corrections of typographical errors.

BLAPSoundASR2-v0-3 2008-09-18. Feedback from Chris Clark. Modification of 'Description'

BLAPSoundASR2-v0-4 2008-09-18. Feedback from Michelangelo

BLAPSoundASR2-v0-5 2008-09-19. Changes agreed by Chris and Michelangelo

Structure of this Document.

The terms in this application profile are described using the attributes defined in the Guidelines for Dublin Core Application Profiles produced by

the CEN MMI-DC Working Group. The home page of this workshop and the guidelines can be found at: http://www.cenorm.be/sh/mmi-dc

BLAP-S Definition The title of the work or work component

Source Comments Typically, a Title will be a name by which the source is formally known.

BLAPSoundASR2 If no title is available construct one that is derived from the resource or supply [no title]. Follow normal

Comments cataloguing practice for recording title in other languages using the 'Alternative' refinement. Where data are

derived from the Sound Archive catalogue, this will equate to one of the following title fields in the following

hierarchical order: Work title (1), Item title (2), Collection title (3), Product title (4), Original species (5)

Broadcast title (6), Short title (7), Published series (8), Unpublished series (9).

name of the instrument. Where data are derived from the Sound Archive catalogue, this will equate to

Source Comments

BLAPSoundASR2 Default will be Sound or Image. Should not be used without encoding scheme for BL metadata creation -

Comments retained for use where existing records have no encoding scheme. Best practice is to use two instances of
