Classify:
To put objects into groups
where members have one or
more characteristics in
common.
                         You can classify books, cars,
                         plants, and animals!

               What else can we classify??
In other words, how can we group
animals using their similarities and
           differences?

                    Let’s think
  Mammals or non- Vertebrates or
  mammals invertebrates

Species
                    Outer covering

  Size

                         Habitat
Wait, animals can be classified
according to if they are mammals…

   ….but what’s a
   mammal?
             Mammals ALWAYS:
Have hair or fur (even just a little)
                 Produce milk
Mammals usually…
          Are warm-blooded
           Have live babies
           Have four legs
Mammal Non-mammal

   Are the animals classified correctly??
Animals can also be classified by their
         outside covering!
          An animal’s outside covering
                   could be:
Fur or hair (like a cat)
       Skin (like an elephant)
       Scales (like a fish)
       Feathers (like a bird)
       Shell (like a turtle)

Let’s take a look at each of
these…..
                                                     Fur keeps the

                                                      covered with scales that
                                                      shed and are replaced by
