Half-melt the butter and margarine. In one large bowl: stir both sugars, eggs, butter, margarine and optional vanilla. In another medium-sized bowl: mix flour, baking soda, and salt. About one cup/water glass at a time, stir dry ingredients into wet ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips and optional nuts. Press the dough into the baking pan with a spoon. (If the dough is sticky, dip the spoon in water to make easier.) Bake, checking at 15 minutes, but it could take up to 30 minutes.
