Section 3203, Title 8 of the California

Code of Regulations requires every

California employer to have an effective

written Injury and Illness Prevention Plan

(IIPP).





To be Effective you must Communicate!

Your IIPP is a

Communication Tool



 It is the foundation of your safety program.

 Provides Guidance

 Provides rules & information.

 Provides procedures.

The 7 Elements of an

Effective IIPP

1. Designates a named responsible person

2. Provides a system of recognition & compliance

3. Provides a system of communication.

4. Prescribes procedures for identifying and

reporting workplace hazards.

5. Procedures for investigating injuries or illness

6. Prescribes procedures for remedy of

unsafe/unhealthy condition

7. Provides employee training & instruction

Responsible person





Named person responsible.

All of us are responsible.

Recognition & Compliance with

safe work practices.



 Everyone is responsible for their own choices.

 Employer responsible for ensuring a safe work place

and enforcing safe work practices.

 Employees responsible for following safe work

practices.

System of Communication



The DSR is the key

Provide communication of safety issues

Coordinates safety communications

Receives reports

Safety Meetings



 DSR organizes and conducts safety meetings

… monthly.

 Safety meeting topics ( in order of priority):

1. Injuries since last meeting

2. Property damage since last meeting

3. Near-Misses since last meeting

4. Identified Hazards

5. What will we be doing in the next month?

Identifying & Assessing

Hazards



 You will receive reports of hazards

 Reports can be verbal or written

 Investigate reports immediately

 Ultimately all must be written

 Any reported hazard can be made anonymously!

 Employees must be notified of identified hazards.

Reports from employees and public.

Supervisors daily inspections.

Formal scheduled inspections.

Immediate investigate all reported hazards





Communicate! - Look, Listen, Act,

 Interview everyone involved.



 To find cause and prevent reoccurrence.



 Don’t pre-judge cause… get the facts!
