Sat Prep Mr. Troha 2011-2012
Course Description
The purpose of this course is to provide instruction in the format of the ACT and SAT
college entrance exams as well as in test-taking strategies, in order to help maximize
students’ scores on these exams. The students will engage in various vocabulary-building
activities and will be encouraged to develop a person plan for preparing for college entrance
exams. The students will have the opportunity to research on various colleges and
universities that they are interested in attending. This research will include collection of data
on entrance requirements, programs offered, and costs of attending these colleges and
universities. Verbal component also includes colleges essay writing.
Course Objective
The foundation of the course is based on the College Board Study Guide Book. The
standards include the following skills:
Create an opportunity for the student to become familiar with the format
of the SAT test
Practice on different questions types
Experience taking full-length practice tests, helping the student learn to
pace during the test
Provide opportunities to sharpen skills in writing effective essays
Expectations:
The students are expected to take responsibility for all course work
The students are expected to turn in all assignments on time. Late work is not
accepted.
After an excused absence, the student is expected to visit my website to check for
assignments or class work that he/she missed.
The student is expected to maintain a folder to organize notes and handouts. The
student should bring that folder every day to class.
The student is expected to come to class prepared. Every student should have
college-ruled paper, pen and pencil.
During the first week of school the student will pay the book fee
Grading:
Points will be awarded for class work, homework and quizzes/tests. Success in all
three endeavors will be necessary to achieve a good grade.
Class attendance is essential for the student to succeed.
There is no extra credit available.

USE OF VIDEO
During the year I will show video clips and excerpts from several different movies. I use
video to clarify and review the literature. If a movie is rated “R”, the clip will be edited to
remove any potentially objectionable material.
