Flow
GO (SOMEWHAT) WITH THE FLOW
A riptide flows away from the beach. A swimmer (A) who swims directly toward the
beach will eventually become exhausted because the current of the riptide takes one
away from the beach and out to sea. The way to escape is to swim parallel to the beach
and away from the riptide (B). The riptide current will push you farther from shore at
first, but you’ll eventually swim out of the riptide and will then be able to return to
shore.
1. What forces are pushing you “out to sea”?
2. If you were to face these forces head on, what would happen? If you have tried this
approach in the past, what has happened?
3. If you were to do nothing, what would happen?
4. Reread the description of the riptide at the beginning of the exercise. Experiment with
doing things that are less direct than facing the problem head-on, and don’t give up.
List your efforts below.
5. What happened?
