									                        Employability Skills – Lesson #11
                             Theme: Work Attitudes
                             Teacher’s Lesson Plan
(Allow two days of 30-45 minutes for lesson)

“Take charge of your attitude. Don’t let someone else choose it for you.”
               H. Jackson Brown, Life’s Little Instruction Book

Materials needed for lesson #11
   students’ manila folders
 Want a Great Career sheet (new)
 Post-it notes for each student (2 colors)
   Lesson #11 worksheet

Day #1
1. Hand out student folders.
2. Introduce the theme for the day, “Work Attitudes” and introduce Jackson’s quote.
Allow time to do item one on worksheet #11, and then facilitate a discussion for
   the quote.
3. Direct the students to the Work Attitudes column on the Want a Great Career
sheet. Ask them to read the column to themselves and reflect what “person” (from
lesson #10 – Make it happen, Let it happen, or What happened – kind of person)
they are for each. Have them apply 1, 2, or 3 to each item, and if necessary, use
NA (not applicable). Attach to worksheet #11. Be sure to give instructions on the
color of each post-it note to use.
4. Give each student a post-it note and list their #1 Work Attitude. Collect. Make a
mini-bar graph on the board for the class to see. Facilitate a class discussion.
5. Ask the students to “X” the item they need the most work on and write it on a
post-it note. Collect and make a mini-bar graph. Facilitate a discussion.
6. On item #4, lesson #11 worksheet, ask the students to define deficiency,
developing, proficient, and exemplary for employability standards. Discuss.
7. Divide the class into groups. Assign 4-5 topics from the Work Attitudes column
that you feel students need to work on. Have each group prepare a skit based on a
specific career (to be determined by the group) and the assigned topic: i.e.,
“follows the rules,” etc. Each skit should show the worker going from “deficient”
   to “exemplary.”
8. Collect worksheet #11; Want a Great Career sheet, Skit evaluation, and student
   folders.

Day #2: Present skits. Fill out Skit evaluation. Discuss. Turn in Skit evaluations and
student folders.
