Method Demonstration Plan
Title: Measuring with a Tape Measure
Purpose: To teach students how to effectively read and measure material that will be
cut.
Focus: Measuring is important in many areas of our life. Such areas include measuring
food when cooking, building a house, and measuring our height. Measurements are
used in every aspect of our lives. Today I am going to demonstrate how to accurately
read a tape measure in order to later make a cut.
Materials:
Tape Measure
Scissors
Yarn
Cardboard
Handouts

1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2
(Show lines on the tape measure)
Tape: Where numbers are
Box: Big part of the tape measure
Bold numbers: inches
Marks: increments
Lock: switch that holds tape in place
V: mark to show where to cut
Preview steps verbally:
Select material to be measured.
Select the measurement
Hold the box end of the tape measure while pulling the tape end.
Place the tape at the starting point and pull the box end.
Pull the box end a little past the desired measurement and set the lock to hold tape in
place.
Read the tape to determine the measurement to mark.
Make a mark using the pencil.
Pick the scissors up and cut at the mark.
Perform the skill:
Select material to be measured.
