									YOUTH LESSON 2

Singing in Prison Name: _______________________

Acts 16
The Roman prison officer chained Paul and
Silas to the walls in the innermost cell of that black,
                                              foul-smelling jail.

In spite of the wounds on their backs and the
chains on their feet, Paul and Silas were full of
thankfulness to God. At midnight they burst out
                                              singing God’s praises.

The other prisoners listened, amazed. They
had never before heard anything but yells and
curses and angry threats in that horrible place.

Suddenly, a violent earthquake shook the
prison to its foundations. The doors were lifted free
of their hinges and the chains broke loose from the
walls.

The terrified prison officer rushed over from his own quarters. When he saw the prison
wide open, he was certain that his prisoners must have all escaped. He pulled out a sword to
kill himself.

But Paul called out urgently, ‘Don’t hurt yourself! We are still here!’

The officer called for a light and went straight to the inmost cell. He knelt in front of
Paul and Silas.

‘Please sirs, tell me what I must do to be saved!’ he begged.

‘Put your trust in Jesus Christ and you will be saved---and your whole family, too,’ Paul
told him.

                                                                                                        1
The prison officer gladly believed what Paul had to tell him about Jesus. He took them
both to his own rooms and gently bathed their bleeding backs. His wife gave them supper.
Then Paul baptized the whole family.

Next morning the Roman officials sent police to the prison with the message, ‘Let those
men go.’

But Paul replied, ‘We are Roman citizens, yet we have been publicly whipped and
imprisoned without trial. Tell them to come themselves to free us.’

When the officials heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens they were very
frightened. They had broken the law by treating them as they had. They hurried to the prison
to apologize and beg them to leave Philippi.

So Paul and Silas visited Lydia and the other Christians only again when on their way.
