Silent Warriors
Silent Warriors is the result of Eric Klemm’s travels
through Canada and the United States, taking
portraits of three hundred men and women over the
course of one year. Klemm explores the subject of
the North American Indian, recalling Edward Curtis’
photographic tradition of the early twentieth century.
Curtis’ pictorialist aesthetics created a romanticized
ethnography of North American Indians and 2 3 4 5
constructed a cultural memory rooted in sentiment.
Klemm deconstructs this grand narrative to reveal
a contemporary, straightforward and vital depiction
of reality.
While Curtis embraced pose and embellishment,
Klemm decidedly avoids this, and relies on the BIOGRAPHY
spontaneity of his encounters with his subjects and
the relationship fostered from that moment. Straying Eric Klemm, born 1939 in Germany, is a photo-
