   PREWRITING
 How do I begin writing?
Huh?
I have a topic, BUT…

How do I get started?

How do I generate ideas?

More importantly, how do I make the writing
process as easy as possible?
    Ways to Brainstorm
 Listing/Clustering – A “hodge-podge” of initial ideas
 Questioning – Asking & making demands of the
topic and your ideas with the topic (Interrogating
the topic – But no waterboarding…)
   Freewriting – Letting the ideas come out in prose;
the basic attempt of trying to say something
    (Writing is talking on paper)
 Outlining – Organizing the ideas; finding and
strengthening ideas by taking them to another level
    intellectually

BRAINSTORMING = IDEAS + ORGANIZATION
The Loathe Writing Assignment
- The next writing assignment will ask you to
define the word „loathe‟ through examples

- This will require you to choose something you
loathe, and develop reasons to support why you
    loathe this particular non-living entity

- Before that, you‟ll need to fully understand what
    the word „loathe‟ means
Things I Loathe (Listing)
- Cell phones
- Text messaging
- Apathy
- Disorder/messy places (cars, house, classroom)
- The smell of coffee
- Haircuts
- The sight of blood
- Crowded places
- Heights/flying
- When people rip cloth/clothes

Points to Ponder…
 Do you think you could write an essay based on
    the ideas clustered?
 Can you draw additional links between
    concepts?
 Are there ideas listed above that you'd reject as
irrelevant or too much to deal with when writing?
 Can you think of some ideas (or a whole set of
ideas) that should have been included but
    weren't?
 Can you come up with a Thesis Statement that
would be appropriate for an essay based on this
    clustering of ideas?

I loathe text messaging! I don‟t understand why people pay money for a service that mainly fulfills
the need to give a quick “shout out” to someone just because he or she can. I guess I feel a little
more secure in who I “roll with” that I don‟t feel an impulse to just remind myself that, “Hey, I have a
friend and his/her name is ________.” I find communication to be more important between two
people than simply hiding behind technology all the time. I‟ve heard people say, “I like text
messaging because some times I want to say something to someone, but I don‟t want to be around
them.” To me, that‟s not a friend then. You don‟t want to be around them! I sure hope my friends
don‟t say that! I have also heard people rationalize it for things like being picked up from practice
after school or asking mom if she wants to go out to lunch. I guess since I didn‟t grow up with this
technology, my parents and I had to work these types of things out in the morning before I left for
school. I still see nothing wrong with that. I understand things come up in life, but having
technology so accessible creates impatience. I value people which is why I value face-to-face
communication. Maybe the reason I am an organized people who makes checklists for what I have
to do during my day is because of this before school communication I was forced to do with my
parents. I never thought of that before…I guess it‟s just another impulsive behavior that humans
perform everyday just like buying on credit.

I noticed, after I reread my thoughts, that I have some
subtopics that I could explore for potential body
paragraphs…

Shotgun Outline
Thesis Concept: Why I loathe text messaging…

I. The most basic yet meaningful way to communicate
to a person is to his or her face, and text messaging
involves no emotional connection to the people and
       information.
II. Paying for useless communication is a waste of
money, and people are too willing to justify having to
shell out their money for this convenience.
III. Texting often relies on immediate feedback which
reinforces society‟s value on possessing information
over knowledge even when dealing with people in
which there are emotions involved. Immediate
feedback doesn‟t allow for analysis of information to
       occur.
