1901
King C. Gillette invents the safety razor with disposable blades.
1903
Gillette manufactures the first safety razor. By year’s end, Gillette sells 51 sets and 168 blades.
For thousands of years, men and women have been removing hair. But how did we get from sharpened stones and burning twigs to the revolutionary Gillette Fusion shaving system? As you can see above, the quest for a better way to shave has taken many twists and turns over the centuries.
Cave drawings indicate that man began shaving to do away with lice and fleas and because he found eating difficult without a clean shaven face. A thick beard was also associated with old age and death. Additionally, historians believe that men removed beard hair to enjoy an advantage in hand-to-hand battle — it was one less point of attack for the enemy. During the late Stone Age, men used razors made of stone or horn and crude tweezers to remove hair. Although tweezing was a painful technique, it allowed men to remove hair less frequently. Men also singed their facial hair with burning twigs.

Gillette introduces the Gillette Thin Blade.
In the Egyptian dynasties of seven thousand years ago, aristocratic men not only shaved their faces, but also their heads and bodies for a more fashionable look and as a defence mechanism in battle. The flint blades that were used ultimately gave way to copper and bronze blades. Meanwhile, the Sumerians and Babylonians were developing early versions of shaving cream. The Sumerians used a mixture of animal fat and wood alkali to prepare beard hair for shaving. The Babylonians placed such a high value on their beards that an oath was not binding unless it was “sworn upon whiskers.” But when they did shave, they used a mixture of fats and ashes to soften their beards. For the Greeks and Romans, beards initially symbolized wisdom, maturity and manhood. But as the practice of shaving spread throughout the Roman Empire, beards became the mark of slaves, servants and barbarians. In Greece, barber shops emerged and took on a social role, a place where men could talk sports and politics.

Gillette introduces the first blade dispenser – the Gillette Blue Blade Dispenser – and eliminates the need to unwrap blades.
1960
Gillette introduces an adjustable razor with three settings – light, medium and heavy – designed for men who want to match the angle of their blades with the toughness of their beards.
1957
Gillette applies a silicone coating to the blade edge to improve quality, safety and comfort of the shave. The new coated blade is called the Super Blue Blade and is considered the most significant breakthrough in shaving since the safety razor.
Flash forward to the 17th century. In Russia, Peter the Great so despised beards that anyone who was not clean-shaven was taxed! During this period, men and women throughout Europe and Russia shaved their heads so they could don extravagant wigs more easily. Well-to-do citizens carried wig wearing to the extreme — they dyed, curled, starched and shaped them, and protected the wigs when sleeping by enclosing them in special boxes. As the 18th century came to an end, so did wig wearing. But as wigs became obsolete, men in the U.S. and Europe ignited a beard and moustache trend. The years between 1800 and 1900 have been coined the “Golden Era” of the straight razor. Men went to barbers to have their moustaches and beards carefully trimmed. Interchangeable blade-razor sets and “seven-day” sets were popular in the 1800’s. But it wasn’t until 1901 that King Camp Gillette fundamentally transformed shaving with the invention of the first safety razor.

The Gillette Company: Transforming The Shaving Landscape – From King C. to Fusion and Beyond
For over 100 years, Gillette has been the source of virtually every shaving innovation, beginning with the safety razor invented by King Camp Gillette in 1901. With the advent of the safety razor, a man did not need to send his straight edge razor to the barber for sharpening. The idea of clamping a smaller version of a straight edge onto a handle was genius — the blade was easier to control, which resulted in fewer nicks and cuts, and was replaceable when it became dull.
Although innovation — including the Gillette Thin Blade, Blue Blade dispenser and adjustable razor — was frequent during the first 70 years of the 20th century, the pace accelerated noticeably during the 1970’s.
1976
Gillette introduces Good News!/Blue II, the first twin blade disposable razor for men.
1985
1977
Trac II / GII
Gillette introduces the first razor with a lubricating strip — Atra Plus/Contour Plus.
Gillette introduces the first twin blade shaving cartridge with a pivoting head – the Atra/Contour shaving system. The new head follows the contours of the face for a closer shave.
In 1971, Gillette introduced the first twin blade razor, Gillette Trac II, with two parallel blade edges housed in a single cartridge. Its development was driven by Gillette’s earlier discovery of the “hysteresis effect” — the fact that when a blade engages a whisker, it extends the whisker in the hair follicle before cutting it. If a second blade is added to the first, and positioned so that it cuts the hair at the precise moment before retraction, a closer shave results. With this revolutionary product, Gillette reinvented the way men shave.
Atra/Contour
Atra, introduced in 1977, built upon the innovative twin blade concept of Trac II to provide consumers with an even better shave. The first twin blade shaving system with a pivoting head, Atra followed the contours of a man’s face, ensuring a closer, smoother shave. Consumers responded by making Atra the best-selling razor in the U.S. by the end of its first year on the market.

2001
Gillette introduces the premium triple-bladed Sensor3 disposable razor to the Sensor family of razors.
2003
Gillette introduces MACH3Turbo and the new Gillette Series. MACH3Turbo, the Company’s next generation triple blade shaving system, delivers Gillette’s closest and most comfortable shave with less irritation, even when shaving against the grain.
Introduced in 1998, MACH3 was Gillette’s most significant men’s shaving advance since the launch of the Trac II twin blade razor. With its three progressively aligned blades and streamlined DLC™ Comfort Edges, which were thinner than any other Gillette blade edges, MACH3 represented a quantum leap in shaving technology and performance. The progressively aligned, spring-mounted blades, DLC™ Comfort Edges and innovative forward pivot action worked in concert to provide men with a closer shave in fewer strokes with less irritation.
Following on the success of MACH3, Gillette introduced its next generation triple blade shaving system: MACH3Turbo. Operating under 35 patents, the MACH3Turbo shaving system adds significant performance enhancements to MACH3’s breakthrough technologies. New Anti-Friction blades reduce the cutting force needed to slice through hair. An ultra-soft protective skin guard with thinner microfins engages beard hair and stretches the skin more effectively. The result was Gillette’s closest and most comfortable shave with less irritation, even when shaving against the grain.
The Science of Shaving
2004
Gillette introduces M3Power – the world’s first wet shaving system to use battery powered technology. This ground breaking razor features innovative technology making it easy to shave more thoroughly with one easy power stroke.
2006
Gillette makes another breakthrough in technology with Fusion. The razor features 5 blades to provide extraordinary comfort and a precision trimmer for tricky places such as sideburns and under your nose. The range is available in manual and Power versions.
The next step in the MACH3 family saw Gillette turn the shaving industry on its head by introducing the world’s first micropowered razor which emits gentle micropulses for an incredible shaving experience. The razor features a redesigned handle for better handling in the wet as well as PowerGlide blades to deliver incredible glide and shaving comfort.
The most recent addition to the Gillette range is Fusion which combines breakthrough technology on the front and back of the cartridge. 5 blades on the front are spaced closer together, creating a shaving surface to help reduce shaving force for incredible comfort, while a single precision trimmer blade built into the back of the cartridge is perfect for tricky places like sideburns, under the nose and around facial hair. Fusion Power is a power wet shaving system that combines revolutionary blade technologies on the front and back of the cartridge, while delivering soothing micro-pulses that help reduce friction and increase razor glide for Gillette’s best shave ever.
2007
Gillette presents Gillette Fusion Power Phantom, with great Fusion power technology and a sleek new design. Soothing micro-pulses help reduce friction and give excellent razor glide. With Gillette Fusion Power Phantom you’ll barely feel the blades; you’ll really feel the difference, versus Fusion Manual.
Most recently, Gillette has brought a flash of sleek design to the shaving market with Gillette Fusion Power Phantom – a shaving system combining the breakthrough technology of Fusion Power with a sleek new design. Today, Gillette remains the undisputed leader in shaving: At the forefront of product performance and technological innovation, and first in the minds of men.

THE SCIE NCE
The Science of Shaving
Gillette researchers have studied skin and hair extensively in the quest for the perfect shave. For those of you who are not as immersed in the subtleties of hair removal, their insights into hair and shaving may be enlightening.
What Is Hair?
One strand of human hair consists of three parts: the cortex, the cuticle and the medulla. Human hairs are contained within hair follicles; the root, or papilla, is found at the base of the follicle, deep within the skin. It is the only living portion of the hair.
cuticle medulla cortex
How Does Hair Grow?
Once the cells that comprise hair are produced, they die and harden, forming the hair shaft. The hair shaft is then pushed up through the follicle opening toward the surface of the skin.
How Fast Does Hair Grow?
Hair grows at an average rate of one-quarter inch per month.
THE SCIE NCE
The Science of Shaving
How Does Shaving Affect Hair?
Contrary to popular belief, shaving does not alter size or color of hair. Nor does it cause shaved hair to grow back thicker, darker or faster. Shaving does, however, alter the tip shape of the re-grown hair, which may initially change the way hair feels as it grows back.
How Many Hairs Are In A Man’s Beard?
A man’s beard typically contains between 7,000 and 15,000 hair follicles, a number that is genetically determined. No new follicles are formed after birth.
Is There A Difference Between Men’s and Women’s Hair?
Yes. Men’s facial hairs are 50 to 60 percent larger in diameter and more irregularly shaped than women’s leg hair, which is primarily oval-shaped. The difference in diameter between men’s and women’s hair explains why the recommended pre-shave soaking period is different — three minutes for men, two minutes for women.
Gillette World Shaving Headquarters
Development of Gillette products is done predominately in the UK and USA. The Gillette World Shaving Headquarters in Boston, MA, is where hundreds of testers shave annually in the name of science, exploring new frontiers in hair removal technology. The depth of shaving knowledge within these walls and those of The Gillette Technology Centre in Reading, UK, has earned Gillette its star status in hair removal globally. The first blades to roll off Gillette’s production lines defined a new standard in hair removal and ultimately led to Gillette’s unofficial motto, “There is a better way to shave and we will find it.” Today Gillette’s tireless quest has become a science in and of itself — the science of shaving.
Cutting Edge Technology — Development of Innovative Products
The ultimate test for a Gillette razor is the reaction of a consumer when he shaves with it. After all, if the razor doesn’t fit comfortably in a man’s hand and the blade doesn’t glide across the skin smoothly, science and technology mean very little. But before Gillette researchers put potential products to the human test, they analyze, calculate, measure and take an “up-close and personal” look at hair and hair removal with a battery of proprietary equipment.
The Science of Shaving
So How Do You Achieve The Best Possible Shave?
There are three main objectives to achieve when designing a razor: • Closeness • Comfort • Safety
To achieve closeness, the hair undergoes a process called hysteresis. This is where the blade initially pulls the hair further out of the skin, which in turn allows the following blade to cut further down the hair shaft. By having multiple blades, this process is replicated thus giving a closer shave. However as history shows, simply adding extra blades is not a new idea and won’t deliver a great shave!
The problem with extra blades is that you also get increased drag and therefore irritation. The way to counter this is by spanning the blades across a smaller distance. This reduces the skin bulges created by the pressure exerted by the blades and places a more uniform stress on the skin. Of course, having 5 MACH3 equivalent blades packed together raises the problem of the razor clogging. Fusion gets around this problem by using narrower blade supports thus retaining excellent rinsing.

Shave Test Lab – The Relentless Pursuit of the Perfect Shave
In order to stay ahead of the game the scientists and engineers at Gillette ask themselves daily: “Where does the next breakthrough in shaving technology lie?” Gillette is its own harshest critic and constantly looks at ways to improve its products therefore delivering an outstanding shave.
Testing is a vital element of this process and nowhere is it more evident than at The Gillette Technology Centre. Every day, men enter computerequipped cubbyholes where lab-coated technicians hand off the latest product prototypes for test runs; around the corner, women shave legs and under arms in a bank of private shower rooms. On any given day, members of the public are invited to The Shave Test Lab at The Gillette Technology Centre to shave under recorded conditions and in the strictest secrecy. As they shave, they rate the product of the day on electronic keyboards. These scores aid Gillette in perfecting each of its products before it is produced in quantity.
Heading style...
But Gillette testing doesn’t stop in the lab. Gillette has long been committed to “real world” consumer product testing. Fusion, for example, was tested among thousands of men around the world before it was introduced into the marketplace. And it’s feedback from real men, shaving with real razors, which leads to innovation. In fact the positioning of the Precision Trimmer blade took into account the feedback from test panellists and combined it with the scientific research from The Gillette Technology Centre. Scientists and engineers realized the difficulty in getting a blade to cut things like sideburns accurately was due to the forward pivot action. By flipping the razor over and putting a blade on the back, the cutting action locked out the cartridge head, allowing the shaver to get precise positioning of the blade – thus resulting in the Precision Trimmer blade.
State of the Art Manufacturing Equipment — Ensuring Quality in Quantity
What makes it possible for Gillette to deliver superior shaving products in the quantities that consumers throughout the world demand? The state-of-the-art high-speed assembly lines mass produce consistently high-quality products cost-efficiently, utilizing machinery and technology that are proprietary to Gillette.
The Science of Shaving
At the Boston factory, six machines each assemble 600 cartridges a minute, or 10 a second. Consider the production process for Gillette blades: Visitors to Gillette’s 1.5 million square foot facility in Boston usually are surprised to find that technicians can safely handle long strips of blades. But that’s because a blade strip starts out as unsharpened steel, as safe to handle as a butter knife. After rapid heating and cooling have hardened each strip, spools of steel hundreds of thousands of feet long are fed into a sharpening machine. Proprietary Gillette machinery cuts each strip into individual blades that are sent to a treatment center where special coatings are applied. Then, with the aid of a blade assembly machine, each blade is secured to a blade support with 13 welds in less than a hundredth of a second.
Heading style...
Blade cartridges are assembled on a continuous assembly machine; a pre-assembly machine loads the blades and blade guards into the cartridge housing. Finally, the blades and cartridges are inspected with strobe lights and in specially designed testing machines. Only if they meet all specifications are the finished products sent to be packaged.
The Science of Shaving
Where Does It All Lead? A Quantum Leap in Shaving Technology
So, where does all of this research, development and testing lead? The result has been a series of technologically advanced products reflective of Gillette’s ongoing quest to improve upon the daily shave. The most recent — and undoubtedly Gillette’s most advanced — is the Gillette Fusion, which delivers Gillette’s most comfortable shave. Once again, Gillette researchers have changed the face of shaving worldwide, but their work is never done, and there’s no telling what tomorrow will bring...

Road Map to style... Heading a Perfect Shave Five Steps to a Perfect Shave
1. Soak Before You Shave
Beard hair is about as tough as copper wire; soften it by washing your face and neck with warm water and a mild soap, removing natural oils and perspiration that inhibit water penetration. After approximately three minutes of soaking, your beard hair will be optimally softened; in fact, the force required to cut beard hair is reduced by almost 70 percent after only two minutes.
2. Apply Plenty Of Shave Gel
Although water is an essential softening agent, it evaporates quickly. Shaving cream or gel moisturizes and softens beard hair, creating a protective layer of lubrication to maximize razor glide. In addition, using a shave gel such as Gillette Fusion HydraGel reduces friction between blade and skin, improving razor glide for a smoother shave.
3. Use Light, Gentle Strokes
Use light, gentle strokes whether shaving with or against whisker growth. For extraordinary comfort, use a Gillette Fusion or Gillette Fusion Power razor and rinse frequently to prevent build-up on the blade edges.

4. Shave Tricky Spots Last
The toughest hairs grow on the chin and around the lips. Save these areas for last as more time soaking in shave gel will soften them further. Use the Precision Trimmer blade on the back of the Gillette Fusion cartridge to reach those tricky places such as under the nose, sideburns and to shape facial hair.
5. After Shaving, Rinse Your Face With Cool Water And Pat Dry
At the end of every shave, rinse your face and neck with cool water to close pores and soothe freshly exfoliated skin. Pat dry. Rinse your razor thoroughly and shake off excess water before storing. Do not wipe the blades, as this can damage the fine shaving surface. Then use Gillette Fusion Hydra Soothe After Shave Balm or Hydra Cool After Shave Gel, which calms and moisturizes your face after shaving.

Summer Shaving Savvy
Spending more time outdoors during the summer means more exposure to the sun. Keep these summer shaving tips in mind to ensure healthy looking skin and a smooth face: • If you’re planning to spend the day at the beach or pool, it’s a good idea to shave early in the morning or even the night before; salt water, sand and chlorine can irritate freshly shaven skin. • Before you have fun in the sun, apply a non-oily, sweat-proof suntan lotion to help keep skin moisturized and to protect it from harmful ultraviolet radiation. • Sunburn can present a challenge when it is time to shave. To avoid irritation, it’s best not to shave immediately after being in the sun. • Want to highlight your tan? Shaving regularly can enhance your tan because you are removing the layer of dead cells that causes skin to appear white and flaky.
Cold Weather Skin Care
Winter’s winds and frigid temperatures tend to dry your skin. Protect your face during the winter months by following these tips: • Use a moisturizing shave gel before shaving. One to try: Gillette Fusion HydraGel Ultra Protection which features a moisturising formula to help hydrate skin. • Prevent dry, flaky skin after shaving by applying an after shave, such as Gillette Fusion Hydra Soothe After Shave Balm with soothing ingredients.

The Sensitive Skin Deal
Millions of men have sensitive skin, characterized by redness, irritation or dryness. Gillette recommends the following steps to minimize irritation: • Hydrate for three minutes — but no longer, as this causes the skin to wrinkle and can increase irritation. • Use a system like Gillette Fusion that reduces the number of strokes — all the better for men with sensitive skin. • Use after shave products that are specially formulated for those with sensitive skin, e.g. Gillette Fusion HydraSoothe Balm.
What Are Razor Bumps?
Pseudofolliculitis barbae, [PFB], is an inflammatory skin condition that can result from the re-entry of curved beard hairs into the skin after shaving or from the penetration of the wall of the follicle by hairs which have been cut below the skin line. The following tips can help in managing razor bumps, ensuring a more comfortable shave:
Shave Daily
Clinical research shows that shaving daily can reduce the frequency of re-entrant hairs, which cause razor bumps.
Prep Before Shaving
Hydrate hair for three minutes with warm water and apply a moisturizing shave gel such as Gillette Fusion HydraGel Sensitive Skin formula to help to revitalize and recondition skin.

Q: Is it better to use hot, cold or warm water to shave? A: Warm water is best for hydrating beard hair. Soaking in warm water softens
hair and causes it to expand, making it 70 percent easier to cut.
Q: What is the difference between shaving with shave gel and with A: Shave gel tends to be less drying than ordinary soap and water and
won’t clog your razor the way soap can. Shave gels help retain skin moisture, making hairs easier to cut. Gillette Fusion HydraGel is available in several varieties, for various skin types. soap and water?
Q: What is the best way to avoid razor burn? A: If the skin is not properly prepared before shaving or if the blade on
your razor is dull, you are more likely to end up with razor burn. Make sure to hydrate hair in warm water for three minutes and apply plenty of shave gel. Also, be sure to change the blade on your razor at the first sign of dullness or discomfort.
THE FAC TS
Grooming Facts Shaving Q&A / Grooming IQ
Q: Is it okay to let my girlfriend or wife borrow my razor? A: It’s not a good idea to share your razor with your partner. Women have a much
larger area to shave and you may find that after only a few shaves, your blade has dulled considerably, increasing the likelihood of nicks and cuts. Tell her to try a razor specifically designed for the way a woman shaves, such as Venus.
Q: Does shaving make your hair grow back thicker? A: Scientists at Gillette have conducted extensive testing on the effects shaving
has on both male and female hair growth, texture and color. This testing has proven that shaving does not affect hair growth, color or texture. Shaving does, however, alter the tip shape of the regrown hair, which may initially change the way hair feels as it grows back. But if hair is left to re-grow completely, it will return to its former state.
Q: In what direction should I shave to achieve the best shave? A: Men’s facial hair tends to grow in different directions. Most men find
using light, gentle strokes and shaving in the direction of whisker growth provides the closest, smoothest shave possible.

Q: What is the difference between disposable and refillable razors? A: The entire razor is discarded when you are through with a disposable razor.
With a refillable razor, only the blade cartridge is replaced. A refillable razor incorporates the most advanced blade technology and an ergonomically designed handle to provide men and women with greater control and a closer, smoother, more comfortable shave.
Q: What is the difference between a single, double, triple and 5 blade A: Gillette’s research has demonstrated that single blade technology, which
has been applied since 1901, is demonstrably inferior to twin blade shaving systems such as SensorExcel, and even more so to 5 blade systems such as Gillette Fusion. But the number of blades alone does not ensure an excellent shave. The 5 blade shaving surface of Fusion features progressive blade alignment, patented Anti-Friction blades and a flexible comfort guard which collectively provide the best manual shave from Gillette. razor?
