Alumni Journal I Winter 2005
MESSAGE FROM THE President
Dr. Calvin W. Lowe
Another spring semester has arrived and it's hard to believe that five years have gone by. As
I near the fifth year anniversary of my presidency here at Bowie State, I am reminded of the
continuing transformation of our university in its physical appearance and campus
atmosphere. Two new academic buildings are now in use and a new student-housing
complex aids our transition to a more residential and traditional campus. Construction of
another academic building begins in June 2005 and the architectural planning for yet another
facility gets underway in July 2005. New art adorns our campus and landscaping has taken
us from having beautiful grounds to being one of the truly magnificent vistas of gorgeous
Prince George's County.
More recently, we partnered with Apple, Inc. and built a $1 million supercomputer. The
XSEED is a 224-node cluster based on Apple's Xserve G5 and to date is the most powerful
computer at any university in Maryland. This cutting edge technology places XSEED among
the world's top 100 most powerful supercomputers on the TOP500 list which serves as a
benchmark for ranking high-performance computing systems. The supercomputing cluster
will enable high-end graphics, animation, and complex computational problems among other
Dr. Calvin W. Lowe capabilities.
During the spring, Bowie State will team up with the American Cancer Society in sponsoring
the Relay for Life. I encourage all of you to begin forming your teams now. Join us in the
race for the cure and support cancer research on May 13th and 14th. Additionally, we've
purchased a subscription to the WeatherBug, a desktop software program that streams live
weather forecasts. As a fundraising initiative, we welcome alumni to purchase a license for
the software program for a nominal fee.
There's no doubt our university is rich in resources, all of which could not have happened without your support. With
that said, I challenge all of you to continue your investment in Bowie State. Take part in Relay for Life. Subscribe to the
WeatherBug. Continue to support the existing initiatives and those to come as we need your help in nurturing the growth
of our university. Thank you for all that you do.
VICE PRESIDENT External Relations
Maitland Dade
As we approach spring, the Office of External Relations is finalizing its operating budget
for FY'06. We are requesting a great deal of support from our colleagues and the university
leadership team. This year is crucial in that we will enter into the silent phase of a capital
campaign. The University of Maryland System will kick-off a $1.7 Billion Capital Campaign in
2007. Bowie State University has pledged to raise $10 Million as its capital campaign goal in
the system-wide campaign. The silent phase begins in July 2005.
BSU fell short of meeting its $7 Million goal in the last capital campaign which closed
in 2001. After much deliberation, the BSU leadership team is confident that we can reach
the $10 Million goal within the seven year campaign period. There will be some investment
necessary though. The Office of External Relations has established a development office
and has begun the process of recruiting and hiring seasoned professionals to assist in the
fundraising activities necessary to meet the challenge.
The results of a successful capital campaign will jettison Bowie State University to a higher
level within the educational community. The benefits are too numerous to list here but I will
Maitland Dade mention a few. Current facilities are in need of higher quality routine maintenance; our beautiful
grounds must maintain their excellent appearance; parking lot improvements can be made;
academic programs will benefit by additional funding to initiate and enhance activities to
better enhance and complement classroom instruction; and, a field house is high on our list
of facility needs. The university has come a long way but there are many paths left to traverse.
I know that you will want to participate in our next adventure. We will keep you posted.
