pp. 397-98 Triple space above and below headings.
Bottom of 348 Use a comma before quotations only after a verb expressing saying or thinking.
OTHER RULES NOT COVERED IN TURABIAN
• Avoid use of “this” as a pronoun. Such use often obscures meaning. Find a noun.
• Avoid excessive use of forms of “to be.” Find action verbs, and avoid passive voice.
• Use “they” and “their” only to refer to plural nouns. Do not use these words to avoid a gender
problem.
• Avoid “there is.” (1) “There” is meaningless. (2) “Is” is boring. Find an action verb.
• “However” is not a conjunction. It may not be used with only a comma to join two independent
phrases.
