BMX PROS VISIT HICKMAN A BMX Pro Trick Bike team, Dyna Pep Performance on Wheels, visited Hickman Elementary and Middle Schools on April 21, 2009. The assemblies included age appropriate music, education about bike safety and lots of bike tricks. Thirty six year old bike pro Rob Nolli has been doing bike tricks for 24 years. He is one of only 3 who are allowed to do tricks with students. Robert Castillo has been doing tricks for 20 years and performed very difficult flatland free style tricks. Students Hailey Alcorn, Branson Angle, Hector Ortiz, Faith Dawson, Jesus Sanchez, and David Nall were student participants during the show. Rob and Robert shared the four rules of their profession: 1. Be the Best in the World Professional (dependable, on time, check equipment for best working order…) 2. Always use proper equipment and be good role models 3. Have a high school or higher education (80% of trick bike riders have a college degree) 4. Have a drug free and healthy life style for concentration and focus. Thank you to Mr. Wynn and Mrs. Choate for this great assembly. Everyone can watch these professional bikers as they perform during the Mavericks and Bulls basketball playoff this year.
HICKMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL 8TH GRADE Hickman Middle School 8th graders are preparing for their trip to Washington D.C. and surrounding historical areas. They will take their trip in May. To prepare for one of the best experiences of their life and ensuring that everywhere they go they will know as much as possible, 8th grade students are doing a significant project, Washington D.C. power points. Each place the students will be visiting in the D.C. area was listed and students, beginning with the highest grade, got to chose what they wanted to research and prepare an interesting power point. These power points included the history of the location, what students will see when they are there, the significance of the location, and three questions about what was taught during the power point. Students had laptops available to use during class 5 or 6 times before the project was due. Students interviewed agreed that the hardest part was finding the right web site to get pictures and information. The students will hear these power points beginning on April 27th in their Social Studies class. Carlos Pena is doing his power point on the National Zoo - "It was interesting to learn about special, specific animals at this zoo and what the zoo does to protect them." London Miller is doing hers on Williamsburg - "I'm learning about the history and why it was preserved. I like this assignment because it is easier to work alone, you can get done quicker, and it allows more self expression and creativity. We have been required to work in groups for all our other projects." Jenna Deardorff is doing her power point on Twilight Tattoo - "Twilight Tattoo is a pageant show, one of the most popular! It includes history and military in full dress." Thomas Angarole is doing his on the Bureau of Engraving and Printing - "I like this project because we learn so much. Like every little thing is engraved and there are only 14 people in this whole country who can do it." All students agreed that it is good to know more about where you are going even though it is a lot to learn in a short amount of time. DATES TO REMEMBER April 27 thru May 4 - Elementary Standardized Testing April 27 thru 29 - HMS 6th Grade "Camp Sea Lab" April 28 thru 30 - HCS Outdoor Ed.
