STUDENT’S PLACE IN SCHOOL
Student level depends on a number of things. These include the level of competence in English, age,
past academic results in own country and subjects chosen.

Whatever year level the student is admitted to, the New Zealand students will probably be a year
younger than the international student. This is because our children start their formal schooling at a
younger age than students in most countries. Our school year begins and ends at a different time. All
this makes it difficult for us to judge exactly which form level the student be admitted to until the
student has been here a few weeks and we can see how they actually perform.

For this reason the class level we put on the “Offer of Place” is a PROVISIONAL one. If the work is
too hard (or too easy) for the student, we will change the class level.

SUBJECTS
Subjects chosen by the student depend on what course they wish to do at a University or Institute of
Technology. Mathematics and Sciences are required for many courses.

If the student is entering the school at Year 12 there are subjects that are unavailable unless studied
previously. These include languages, Physics and Chemistry. Other subjects may be taken for the first
time, however the student may find these difficult. Some subjects have entry restrictions, eg swimming
proficiency required for Marine Studies.

Please make sure to let us know what university degree course the student wishes to study, or details of
proposed academic pathway, so that we can give the best possible advice on subjects taken.

                                                                    MMC Enrolment Procedures 2012
