War Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to the two dental students with the highest aggregate of marks in the Part 1
examination overall at their first sitting.
The A.H.R. Rowe Prize
This prize was endowed by a donation from Professor A.H.R. Rowe, former Dean of
the Dental School, to fund a prize in Conservative Dental Surgery. This prize is to be
awarded to the student with the best record of achievement in the phantom head
course as a result of the test at Christmas in Year 2.
1. The prize is awarded in the subject of Conservative Dentistry
2. The prize will consist of £100for the winner and a certificate of merit (no money)
for the runner-up
3. The prize is awarded annually to the Year 2 student with the best record of
achievement in the Phantom Head course. Candidates are selected from their in-
course assessment at the end of the term 2 practical test & associated presentation
plus a discretionary viva voce examination.
The J.A. Smith Scholarship for Dental Materials Science [Part 3A Examination]
This prize was established by Deed of Trust in 1926, to found a Scholarship in
Prosthetic Dentistry. Supplemented in 1999 by a transfer of the E M Tregarthen
Fund from the Special Trustees of Guy's Hospital.
1. The prize will consist of £100 for the winner and a certificate of merit (no money)
for the runner-up
2. The prize is awarded annually to the student with the best performance in the Part
3A Examination at his / her first sitting.
3. This prize is open to all Year 3 students from 1999 / 2000.
Scanlan Bursary
1. The bursary is awarded annually to a male or female student of the Medical School
or Dental Institute who plays rugby and has made a substantial contribution to the
rugby club as a player or official.

2. The student must have good academic credentials and have performed well in
Years 1 and 2.
3. Applications must be made in writing to Dr T. Gibson, department of
Rheumatology, Guy’s Hospital by 31st November of each year.
4. The prize will be awarded by the widow of Paul Scanlan, Dr Mark Kinirons
(Department of Geriatrics, Guy’s Hospital) and Dr Terence Gibson (Department
of Rheumatology, Guy’s Hospital).
The value of the prize is £1000.
The David Frank Sturdee Prize for Prosthetic Dentistry
This prize was established by Declaration of Trust dated 6 July 1939 to endow a prize
in Dental Prosthetics.
1. The prize will consist of £100for the winner and a certificate of merit (no money)
for the runner-up
2. The prize is awarded annually to a Year 3 student for excellence in clinical and
technical performance in the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry. Students will be
considered on the basis of a clinical presentation plus a discretionary viva voce
examination.
3 This prize is open to Year 3 Students at Guy's Campus for 2000-2001, and will be
open to all students from 2001-2002.
The School Prize for Human Disease (Part 3B Examination)
Awarded annually to the student with the best performance in the Part 3B
examination at his/her first sitting. This prize is open to all Year 3 students from
1999/2000.
The Lonnon Bursary
The Lonnon Bursary fund was established in 1923 by a legacy to found a bursary.
1 The prize is awarded in the subject of Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry
2. The prize will consist of £100 for the winner and a certificate of merit (no money)
for the runner-up
3. The prize is awarded annually to a Year 4 student at Guy's Campus on the basis of
the In-Course Assessment during their periods in the Department of Orthodontics &
Paediatric Dentistry plus a discretionary viva voce examination.

The Ronald Gain Prosthetics Prize
This prize was established in 1988 for a prize to be awarded annually for the best
essay on Prosthetic Dentistry.
1. The prize is awarded in the subject of Prosthetic Dentistry
2. The prize will consist of £100for the winner and a certificate of merit (no money)
for the runner-up
3.. The prize is awarded to a Year 4 student at Guy's Campus for the best essay
submitted in response to an annual competition concerning a topic of Prosthetic
Dentistry that will be published in the department.
The A M Clover Prize
To be awarded annually to the student(s) who have best epitomised the Guy's motto
"Dare Quam Accipere" by showing that it is better to give than to receive, in their
attitude and wholehearted involvement in all aspects of School life during their
student careers.
The Geoffrey Forman Prize
To be awarded annually on the basis of an essay in 'Oral Diagnosis'. The title of the
essay will be published one month before submission. The prize is open to all Final
Year Medical & Dental Students. It is also open to qualified Dentists studying and
qualified Doctors studying Dentistry (entitled to enter once during the secondary
training period).
The H. Arthur Cohen Prize
The Arthur Cohen Prize Fund was established in 1938 by a benefaction to endow an
annual prize.
1. The prize will be awarded in the subject of Anaesthetics & Sedation
2. The prize will consist of £100 for the winner and a certificate of merit and £45 for
the runner-up
3. The examination, consisting of a written paper, is held annually and is open to all
Year 5 dental students from 1999-2000.
The Jack Wheatley Carlton Hunter Prize (current regulations)
This prize was established in 1960.
1. The prize is to the value of £50

2. The prize is awarded annually to the final year student adjudged to have set the
highest standard of exemplary conduct as regards courtesy, humanity and kindness in
the treatment of patients.
3. From session 2003/04 the prize will be awarded annually to the final year student
adjudged to have set the highest standard of exemplary conduct as regards courtesy,
humanity and kindness in the treatment of patients - selected on the basis of
nominations by the Dental Society, the Junior Dental Staff Committee, and the
Dental Institute Advisory Committee taking into account the "professionalism"
aspects of formative assessment plus an interview.
The Laurence Usiskin Prize for Orthodontics & Paediatric Dentistry
The Laurence Usiskin Prize was established in 1998 to bestow an examination prize
and an elective scholarship in memory of the late sub-Dean of the Dental Insititute.
1. The prize will consist of £100 for the winner and a certificate of merit (no money)
for the runner-up
2. The prize is awarded annually to the student who gives the best performance in the
Year 5 Applied Dental Science 5 (Orthodontics & Paediatric Dentistry) examination
at his / her first sitting.
3. This prize is open to all Year 5 students from 1999-2000.
The Malleson Prize
This prize was established in 1988 with a gift to endow a prize.
1. The prize is awarded for research
2. The prize will consist of approximately £100 and a silver salver
3. The prize is awarded annually and is open to clinical dental students.
4. This prize is open to all Year 5 students from 1999-2000.
5. Candidates are required to submit a report on some research work carried out
during their clinical years (excluding intercalated BSc courses) in which they have
taken an active part. Joint entries are not acceptable and the work must be sponsored
by a senior member of staff who is prepared to exercise general supervision.
The report must be submitted to the Dental Institute School Office by the given
deadline and the candidates will, at the discretion of the Examiners, be required to
present for an interview on the general subject of their report.

The Newland Pedley Medal and Prize (regulations operate until 2003/04 session)
The Newland Pedley Prize Fund was established in 1908 by a subscription in honour
of Mr F Newland Pedley, to endow an annual award of a Gold Medal for Practical
Dentistry. The Prize is funded by the Newland Pedley Trust Fund.
1. The prize is awarded in the subject of Operative Dentistry
2. The prize consists of approximately £100 and a medal
3. The examination is held annually and is open to final year students. The
examination will consist of: a) Clinical and practical work - the preparation and
execution of a treatment plan. b) Thesis on a subject decided by the Examiners.
Dates: the procedures to be initiated in July of Year 5 with the final presentations the
following May. Students must carry out all laboratory work personally, except
Prosthetic Dentistry.
The Parris Prize
This prize was established in 1931 by a donation to endow an annual prize for the
student who shows the greatest inventive genius.
1. The prize is to the value of £50
2. The prize is awarded to the student who has shown the greatest inventive genius,
by submission of a report (plus or minus apparatus) and an interview. The report must
be submitted to Guy's Registry by the given deadline.
3. This prize is open to all Year 5 students from 1999-2000.
The Peter Lunt Prize
The Peter Lunt Prize Fund was established in 1978 by Deed and Trust to provide an
annual scholarship and prize.
1. The prize is to the value of £3000
2. The prize is awarded on the basis of a special examination, which will consist of: a)
A discretionary MCQ, and for successful candidates to be followed by b) An essay
paper c) A viva voce examination
3. The prize is open to all Year 5 students from 1999-2000. Some candidates may be
invited to enter.

The Robert Woodhouse Prize
This annual prize was established with memorial subscriptions.
1. The prize is in the subject of Oral Surgery
2. Prizes are to the value of £100 and £50
3. The prize is awarded annually to the student with the best results in the Year 5
Applied Dental Science 3 (Oral Pathology, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Dental
Therapeutics and Radiology) examination.
3. This prize is open to all Year 5 students from 1999-2000.
The Saunders Scholarship (current regulations)
The Saunders Scholarship was established by Deed of Trust in 1875 to found a
scholarship.
1. The prize awarded is a silver salver
2. The prize is awarded to the Year 5 student with the best record of achievement in
the Polyclincics. Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of formative assessments, and
their industry in the Polyclinics. There will be a practical test in Restorative
Dentistry.
3. The prize will be awarded to the Year 5 student with the best record of
achievement in the IRC facilities. Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of formative
assessments, and the quality and quantity of the work achieved plus an interview and
presentation of two patients (excluding case presentation patients).
The S.J. Kaye Prize
The Sidney James Kaye Prize Fund was established by a legacy in 1950 to endow an
annual prize.
1. The prize is awarded in the subject of Oral Medicine and Pathology

3. The prize is awarded annually on the results of the In-Course Assessment for the
Year 5 Applied Dental Science (Oral Pathology, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Dental

1. The prize will be awarded in the subject of Restorative Dentistry
2. The prizes are to the value of £100 and £50
3. The prize is awarded annually to the student with the best results in the Year 5
Applied Dental Science 4 (Restorative Dentistry) examination at his / her first
sitting.
4. This prize is open to all Year 5 students from 1999-2000.

Awarded annually to the dental student with the best results in the Part 1
Biomedical Sciences 1 examination at his/her first sitting.
The School Prize for Part 1 Biomedical Sciences 2 Examination
Awarded annually to the dental student with the best results in the Part 1
Biomedical Sciences 2 examination at his/her first sitting.
The School Prize for Part 1 Biomedical Sciences 3 Examination
Awarded annually to the dental student with the best results in the Part 1
Biomedical Sciences 3 examination at his/her first sitting.
The School Prize for Part 1 Biomedical Sciences 4 Examination
Awarded annually to the dental student with the best results in the Part 1
Biomedical Sciences 4 examination at his/her first sitting.
The Widdowson Prize for Biology
Awarded annually to the student with the best results in the Part 2A Biomedical
Sciences 6 examination at his/her first sitting.
The Baldwin Scholarship
This prize was established in 1933 by a benefaction to endow an award to the
student with the highest aggregate of marks in the four practical tests in
conservative dental surgery.
1. The prize is awarded in the subject of Conservative Dentistry.
2. The prizes are to the value of £100 and £50.

3. The prize is awarded annually to the Year 4 student at Guy's Campus with the
highest aggregate of marks in the written In-Course Assessment plus their first
sitting of the four Practical Tests in Conservative Dentistry, as at the end of the
year (July), plus a discretionary viva voce examination.
The Dolomore Prize
This prize was established in 1938 by a benefaction to endow an annual prize.
1. The prize is awarded in the subject of Periodontology.
2. The prize will consist of £100 for the winner and a certificate of merit (no
money) for the runner-up
3. The prize is awarded annually to a Year 4 student at Guy's Campus on the basis
of the In-Course Assessment during their period in the Department of
Periodontology. In the instance that there is more than one possible awardee a viva
voce examination might be held.
The School Prize for Dental Public Health
Awarded annually to the student with the best results in the Part 4 Dental Public
Health Examination at his/her first sitting. This prize will be open to all Year 4
students from 2000-2001.
The F.R. Moser Prize
Established in 1962 by a benefaction to endow an annual award to a Final Year
undergraduate student.
1. The prize will consist of £100 for the winner and a certificate of merit (no
money) for the runner-up
2. The prize is awarded annually to a final year student for excellence in clinical
work during their undergraduate course. Selection is on the basis of passing all
practical tests of competence at the first attempt, an "excellent" performance in
the case presentation (best from Applied Dental Science 6 exam at first sitting
reviewed) plus the highest aggregate marks in the practical tests. A discretionary
viva voce examination may be held.

The Harry Radin Prize
The Harry Radin Prize Fund endows a prize awarded for an essay on the dental
treatment of mentally or physically disabled patients.
1. The prize will consist of £100 for the winner and a certificate of merit (no
money) for the runner-up
2. The prize is awarded on the basis of an essay on the treatment of mentally and
physically disadvantaged patients.
3. This prize is open to all Year 5 students from 1999-2000.
