                                      FROM THE PASTOR
                                      Labor Day Illustration
God has identified himself with our working lives. The fundamental dignity and value of our labor has
its source in his hands. Because God, through his Son, became a working man, he has lifted all
work, not least menial toil, onto a higher plane. Mark 6:3 “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary,
the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda and Simon?” The hands of Jesus were working hands.

If we go in our imagination to an upper room in Jerusalem, we see Jesus girded with a towel, taking
the dusty feet of his disciples in his hands and washing them. This was in those times an act of a
slave. His entire ministry on earth had been spent in serving others. The hands of Jesus were a
servant’s hands.

We are called to serve! Such Christian service is not to be limited to Christian vocations like
becoming a minister or missionary. The busy young mother in the home is a blessed service, giving
love to her children and nurturing into Disciples of Christ in the home and church community. So also
the hands that deliver “meals on wheels,” or the youthful hands that clean up the yard of an elderly
person’s home, and the hands that collect for the world’s hungry. Our Labor for God in Christ will
never be in vain.

                                                                  In Christ’s Love,
                                                                         Pastor John

                                     Sunday School Special
We will begin having a special youth Sunday School once a month beginning in
September. The first special Sunday School will be held on September 12. We
will have the children and youth join together for a themed program that will
include creative Bible lessons, and a rotating set of activities such as crafts,
activities, games, skits, music, DVDs, snacks, projects, field trips, etc. Several
people have volunteered to help with the program.

Be sure to invite your friends to attend this special Sunday School time. Anyone who wishes to help
teach various activities or help out, please let Kathy McIntire know and she will gladly take your help.

                    THANK YOU FOR THE DIAPERS
With the completion of August, we have completed our drive for diapers for children
and adults. We are very grateful to everyone who brought diapers or contributed
cash to the Interfaith Ministries Diaper Depot. We have a good number of baby
diapers, adult diapers, wet wipes, and lotion to deliver to Interfaith Ministries. Thank
you for your generosity.

We hope to begin another donation drive in October. If you have any suggestions, please let Cheryl
McQueen know so that we can include them in our mission. A possible ministry is for the Friends of
the Family. If approved, we will provide a list of items needed closer to October.
