Pleasanton Small Business Advocate Finds His Outreach Efforts Pay Off
For Eric "Otis" Nostrand, business is never dull in California, and the opportunities to enhance his business and his community through advocacy are as plentiful as the ales at his brew house. I decided to use my space this month to share an article with you about a member of our Chamber that acknowledges his contribution to our Chamber and our community. Thanks for all you do, Otis.

Over the 13 years that he has been in business, Nostrand has seen his pubs grow to become very popular places with diverse clientele where it's not unusual to see a mix of families grabbing a bite to eat, entrepreneurs conducting business and friends having a beer and some good conversation all at once.
Nostrand, a recipient of the California Chamber of Commerce Small Business Advocate of the Year Award, is the owner of The Hop Yard American Alehouse & Grill in Pleasanton and San Ramon.
"I get to hear from businesses large and small," he says. "I hear all the time, 'California is a great place, but they're making it tough on us!'" To run a business in California, "you have to be ready for anything," Nostrand says. "In the Tri-Valley, it's been a great couple of years. We've been thriving in terms of recovery."
That thriving economy has brought challenges, however, that demand both personal and community involvement. When Nostrand saw the need for advocacy, he got involved with the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce.
He first got involved with the Pleasanton Chamber as a small business person trying to keep his head above water. "I appreciated that the chamber was standing up for people like me." That advocacy on his and others' behalf was the real value of joining, he insists.

Small Business Advocate of the Year Award
As he has gained experience and become familiar with the needs and consistent problems business people face, "Now I am acting as a tail gunner to keep some of the things I don't want off my back."
His efforts have earned him the respect of his colleagues. David Bouchard, president/chief executive officer of the Pleasanton Chamber, says Nostrand is "a true leader who cares deeply about his community and always keeps the best interest of all residents in mind when advocating the business point of view on local and statewide issues."
Because he feels so strongly about political advocacy on behalf of business, Nostrand got involved with the creation of "Vision Pleasanton," a document that outlines eight characteristics the business community feels are important in maintaining Pleasanton as a "community of
Political Advocacy
"We have motivated folks to have a voice in the community," says Nostrand. "Politicians have hard time turning away from that." This work falls directly in line with what Nostrand sees as the chamber's main purpose: "The chamber's value to
"BACPAC deals with candidates and ballot issues that are directly related to Vision Pleasanton," says Nostrand. The committee has had a good deal of success recently in endorsing and electing candidates supportive of its goals.
While several of these traits are "mom and apple pie" things most people can get behind, others are a bit more apt to spark spirited discussion, including housing and transportation issues. To help move these issues forward, the chamber formed the Business and Community Political Action Committee (BACPAC), which Nostrand chaired during its inception.

place to live, and that work still needs to be done.
Reasons to Get Involved
A native son of Pleasanton, Nostrand has seen his hometown grow from its rural origins to a thriving and expanding city with excellent amenities. He always is working to let new residents and businesses know that their fabulous community didn't just spring up; a lot of people have worked hard to make it an inviting
"I've got a stake in the whole thing, and it benefits me because I get to hear about other people, and they get to hear about me," he says. "It helps open up doors from a business perspective."
As Nostrand has become more engaged in advocacy, he's found it's not as hard to incorporate into his life as he thought it might be in the beginning.
Nostrand stresses the great need for people to get engaged in their community: "Things can't happen without people getting involved! Any community is only as good as the folks who will dive in and get their hands dirty," Nostrand says. "People are scared away from it because they think there's nothing in it for them, but there definitely is. If people just take a little time to do something extra, they won't be disappointed," he says.
"You have to constantly be remaking yourself, making it the best it can be," he says emphatically. "We can't rest on our laurels. We have to be on top of it because it can go away."

New Pleasanton Consignment Boutique Gives Back to the Community
Savvy Seconds, an upscale consignment boutique, opened in downtown Pleasanton in November 2006. As a consignment store, Savvy Seconds shares proceeds on sales with the person who brought in the item. With the agreement of the consignor, Savvy Seconds donates all clothing not sold after 60 days to such community programs as Wardrobe for Opportunity, Shepherd’s Gate, and the Princess Project. During the winter, the store enticed customers to donate warm coats to Shepherd’s Gate by offering 10% off a purchase for every coat donated. Looking ahead, Savvy Seconds plans to open the store for private parties for charitable organizations with 10% of the proceeds going to that charity. Jamie Hintzke was chosen by Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi, D-Hayward, to receive the annual award that honors a woman from each of California's 79 assembly districts in recognition of March as Women's History Month.

Currently the City of Pleasanton has a massage ordinance prohibiting students of massage therapy from providing services at reduced rates in a student clinic and professional massage therapists from performing massage at local events. Through the efforts of World School of Massage and Holistic Healing Arts, the city is considering changing the ordinance to allow professional massage therapists to provide massages in clients’ homes and at events like street fairs with an offsite permit. The revised ordinance would also allow World School to start a student massage clinic, allowing people to try massage at a reasonable cost. The proposed changes to the City of Pleasanton Regulation of Massage Ordinance (Ordinance 6.24) will come before the City Council soon. Anyone interested in voicing an opinion can send comments to Mary Lou Campbell in the City Manager’s Office at mcampbell@ci.pleasanton.ca.us. As I watched this man’s kindness, I thought about how easy it would be for
Yes, the driver stopped to help a young man and woman push their stalled car to the side of the road. Did he know them? Probably not. Could he have easily driven around them? Yes.
slowed I down. The car ahead of me pulled over and the male driver jumped from his car. He walked briskly toward another car that Pamela Ott was in the middle of the street. That’s when it happened. That’s when I witnessed an incident not far from my own home committed on a quiet street in Pleasanton: A random act of community.
Random Acts of Community
After all, as a Community of Character, Pleasanton prides itself on exhibiting positive and healthy character traits. It’s who we are. Not long after the stalled car incident, I saw another random act of community by a woman walking with a friend. As they walked, the woman reached down and picked up a piece of litter.
any of us at any time in our day to commit a random act of community: Holding a door for someone, letting another go first, saying a kind word.
larly in Pleasanton, I’d bet we could all do a better job if we put our minds to it.
Need some more inspiration? A few months ago I heard about Brigid Carroll, Samina Collins, and Rachel Knowles— all fourth grade students at Lydiksen Elementary—who were conducting their daily assignment of picking up dropped jackets on the playground when they found a jacket on the tanbark. Hearing change jingling in the pocket, they reached in and discovered a girl's wallet.
A local version of the concept ‘pay it forward’ as described in the book by Catherine Ryan Hyde, these random acts of community will benefit us, one and all. So what do you say? As we enjoy this spring season, I invite everyone to contribute to the quality of life we enjoy in our city by committing at least one random act of community every week. As you do, email me and I’ll keep a record, and maybe share some of your stories in a future column. Thanks for reading
I was touched that this woman had so much pride in our city that she would take the time to do this, especially since she and her friend—who were walking at the time along First Street—were not near any trash receptacles.
While I'm sure such acts occur regu-
As they opened the wallet to check whose it was, they discovered over ten dollars in bills and assorted change. Responsible and honest, the girls committed an act of community by bringing the wallet to the main office where it was later delivered to an appreciative second grade girl.
