					Dear Parents

                                  JANUARY NEWSLETTER

Happy New Year to everyone!

School League Tables
National Primary School results were published in December and I am delighted to inform
parents that once again Cliffe Woods Primary came 1st in the Authority. 91% of Year 6 children
last year achieved at least a Level 4 in both English and Mathematics compared to the local
average of 67% and a national average of 73%.

Congratulations to all the children and staff for working so hard. League table information can
be found on the web (just Google 2010 Primary League Tables).

School Closure – Snow!
May I remind parents that details of our emergency closure routine can be found in December’s
newsletter, a copy of which can be found on the school website.

Latecomers to School
Towards the end of last term we were increasingly aware of a large number of children arriving
late for school. Children should arrive between 8.45 a.m. and 8.55 a.m. and not later than 8.55
a.m. Lateness really does disrupt and delay the start of lessons. The Education Welfare Officer
is visiting the school later this month and she will be informed of all persistent latecomers.

Parent Consultations
Parent consultations will be held on Tuesday 25th January and Wednesday 26th January from
3.30 p.m. – 4.30 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. – 8.00 p.m. on both days. You may make an appointment
to see your child’s teacher during these times by either coming into school and signing up on the
appropriate list which will be out from Monday 10th January, writing in your child’s Contact
Book or telephoning the School Office.

Additionally, Mrs Weallans, the school’s Special Needs Co-ordinator, will also be available for
those who wish to make an appointment.

School Pantomime
On Thursday 27th January we have a real treat for the whole school when a touring stage
company will perform Dick Whittington. The show will commence at 1.30 p.m. and should
finish by home time. There is no cost to parents for the pantomime as all costs are being met by
Ward Security.

After School Clubs
These will commence after the February break, details will be in the next newsletter.

Christmas Cards
I sincerely apologise for the non-arrival of the Christmas cards. We used the company
‘Fundraise 4 Schools’ (based in Poyntington, Dorset), a company we have used for several
years. Unfortunately, full payment had to be made before printing and the company banked our
payment of £1,500 in November. Despite numerous efforts, the company have ignored our
messages and e-mails. They are not answering telephone calls and their website is now not
available. We will continue in our efforts to contact the company and endeavour to secure a
refund. However, I am not very optimistic.
I understand that this is a disappointment and I am also concerned that the school could lose
£1,500 should we have to refund parents. I will inform you as soon as we have more
information.

School Funding
The outlook for school funding from April is rather gloomy. The Government has announced
that schools will receive a ‘pupil premium’. This effectively is an additional £430 for every
pupil who receives a free school meal. The Government are doing this as it believes that schools
in areas of high unemployment or deprivation need more funding to be successful. However,
whilst there will be some winners in this budget settlement, schools like ours (with low free
school meals) will lose out. Currently, we are planning for a real-terms cut of 4%
(approximately £45,000).

We are continuing to explore the possibility of other funding opportunities. However, may I
request all those who are entitled to free school meals, but who have not claimed yet, to please
complete an application urgently. The count for funding is 20th January.
