Care Of DVD Drive

Use the right media for the drive.

Media Types: 80 & 120mm Media;

CD-R, CD-RW, HS-RW & US-RW 74min/650MB & 80min/700MBCDs;

DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R & DVD-RW

Keep Draw Close and use the power button to close the draw.

Care Of CD Media

Compact disks are sturdy and they last longer than most media, and are not affected by

magnetic fields. But like other media they can lose data too, and so need special care.

Recordable CDs—CD-Rs and CD-RWs are more delicate than regular CDs, and should be

handled more gently. Here are some dos and don’ts.

Temperature

Keep your CD-Rs and CD-RWs at room temperature. Since they are made from plastic,

exposure to direct sunlight or temperature higher than 48 degree Celsius can warp the

CD, making it useless.

X-Ray machines

Compact disks do not use magnetic technology to store the data, and unlike floppy

disks, are not affected by the X-ray machines in the airports.

Labelling

Avoid putting stickers, labels and tapes, or writing with regular pens on CDs. Use

labeling kits instead. Misuse of the label side can damage the data layer right under the

top surface. If you need to write something on the label side use soft felt-tip markers.

Contact

Be very careful while handling CDs. As their media area is exposed they are very

vulnerable. Protect your CDs against dirt and scratches.

Jason Bonaccorso 7900084390

Cleaning

Don’t use any solvents or liquid cleaners as these can harm the plastic casing. Never clean the label

side of a CD-R or CD-RW. This can cause more damage as the data is actually stored right under the

label of the disk. CDs should be cleaned radially. Start from the inside of the disk, move outwards

rubbing in straight lines and not circles. Cleaning in circles can cause long scratches over a single

section of the data track causing signal loss. But small scratches across many tracks can be handled

by the error correcting capabilities of the drive.

Moisture

Don’t expose your CDs to liquids. If you do happen to spill something on it, rinse it with warm

water, and wipe it off with a soft cloth. Don’t use hot water or a coarse cloth.

Flexibility

Bending a CD can be dangerous. They tend to shatter, sending shards of sharp plastic in all

directions.

Dust and dirt

Accumulation of dust and dirt can hamper the reading of a CD by a CD drive.

To use the DVD – RW Disk in another computer, Incd Software or reader has to be installed to read

the disk.

CD – DVD - RWS have to be formatted before use.

How To Formate CD Media

Guide To Burning CD ROMs In Nero Burning Program

1. Click on the Nero Icon on the desktop. This will open the program. The first window that appears will ask you

whether you want to copy files on to a CD from another CD or from existing files on the computer. For course related

audio resourcers select Compile New CD. Press next.

2. The next window will ask you what type of format you would like to burn in. The resource files for the Courses are

in MP3 format, and although they are music files they are considered to be data when you're burning them onto CDs.

Choose Data CD. Press next.

Jason Bonaccorso 7900084390

3.The next screen will ask if you want to create a new CD or burn more data onto an existing CD. Choose Create new

CD. Then press next.

4. Press Finish when the next screen appears.

Jason Bonaccorso 7900084390

5. When the wizard closes you will begin choosing which files will be copied onto the CD. Under the File Browser

window on the right side are the language files. Depending on which language and lesson the student requests you

will navigate into the LLRC-MP3 folder. In this folder is a series of sub-folders that contain the materials for each

course.

Once you have located the files needed simply click and drag them over to the left side into the blank column. This

will tell the computer that those are the files that you want to burn onto the CD.

After you have moved all the files you want to burn over the burn button will turn red. It is located on the third set of

buttons from the right at the top of the screen, on the left side of those buttons. By pressing that button you will begin

the burn process. Once you have started it do not stop it! The CD will be ruined if you stop in the middle of the

process.
