o Weber: I am doing this because the group already had two electronic mailing lists
and the group didn’t ask for this
o Grygiel: Anything they wanted to add finance committee was added by finance
o Voss: Logic of mailing list was they wanted advertisement instead but funds were
better used for mailing list
o Maly: Motion to refer back to finance committee
Roll Call Vote
15-14-0 Bill passes to go back to Finance Committee
Senate Bill 2010-2-034 F: “Special Allocations- MAYAS”
o Stille: Open forum for discussion
o Weber: I move to refer to back to finance committee to cut ISU Daily
Advertisement
o Gallery: Why?
o Weber: Has already received advertisement during regular allocations
Organizations were said to have only one advertisement due to budget
constraints
o Gallery: I want to keep it for our biggest event of the year
o Stille: What did you use the first advertisement for?
o Gallery: Dias De Muertas
o Stille: What will your sencond advertisement be for?
o Gallery: Our spring event
o Knight: Move me down
o Morrissey: Move me down
o Knight: How will you benefit from the advertisement?
o Gallery: By advertising the event as much as possible it will educate campus about
this cultural event
o Knight: What is the event?
o Gallery: Trying to find authentic food, different traditions, different art (dances),
try to bring in Aztec dance group (explains history behind dances)
o Knight: Yeild to Senator Morrissey
o Morrissey: When are the dates?
o Gallery: April and what spaces are available
o Morrissey: As of now for Night of Mexico you are spending $200 or more on just
advertising, why that much?
o Gallery: We are trying to advertise to the student body but also the community of
Ames, we are trying to educate these people on Latino traditions
o Morrissey: The ISU Daily is not going out of the student body
o Gallery: Our last advertisement was commented on in a positive way and we are
really trying to advertise this event
o Gallery: We need flyers and notes in building too
o Gallery: We need so much advertising because the diversity on campus is not very
high and there needs to be a learning experience for our community
o Tompkins: During last year special allocations you asked for $1000, why did you
come back this semester?
o Gallery: This year we have two groups of dancers and we are anticipating more
people
o Tompkins: Why do you need two dance groups
o Gallery: When you first do an event you figure out what works and try to enhance
the experience for the community and enhancing these programs cost money
o Tompkins: How will two dance groups be better than one?
o Gallery: Bigger event
o Choi: On bill as a whole?
o Maly: No to refer back to finance
o Knight: Not all ISU students read the daily, more effective to the Ames Tribune?
o Gallery: Not everyone checks emails but the advertisement will catch the eyes of
students and we try to reach the community by flyers
o Knight: For community outreach?
o Gallery: We want to reach the community on a more personal measure
o Baker: What did your dues go to?
o Gallery: We used our dues for the Iowa Latino Conference and registration fees,
things at meetings like decorations
o Baker: Is there fundraising?
o Gallery: Yes we went to businesses to ask money
o Brown: We are not trying to cut funding for bill, just cutting the ISU Daily
advertisement, seems like too much funding and money would be better spent on
Ames Tribune
o Vander Velden: Aztec Dancers, which are the two groups?
o Gallery: Off subject, not necessary
o Maly: Debate on Bill as a whole
o Ferlazzo: This is for any organizations
o Gallery: Two groups that don’t perform the same thing, the two dance groups have
different backgrounds and provide a cultural experiences
o Vander Velden: What is the cost of each group?
o Gallery: Travel and lodging are included in costs
o Gallery: These groups are hard to find since there is a small Latino populations
o Vander Velden: I just want the breakdown of the budget, refer back to finance
committee
Seconded
o Thomas: $250 DJ is a lot for most DJ’s, why?
o Gallery: When selecting DJ we need to choose by music for the event and bringing
own equipment
o Weber: Reminder to all Senators- we must be fair to all organizations and use same
guidelines for Spring allocations, still against advertising in ISU Daily
For two dance groups does the organizations pay for travel?
o Gallery: It is the travel and they stay in our homes
o Weber: Is travel included
o Gallery: No we need more funding for travel and nice lodging, we don’t charge
students for these events because it’s supposed to be a diverse campus, we are
doing a service to students on campus
o Weber: If the performers charge you for travel then its different if you pay for it
o Stille: We are asking questions for our job, I vote no
o Voss: We should not be spending student fees on advertising for Ames community
o Vander Velden: Last year the DJ was very helpful
o Gallery: DJ played appropriate music and helped the event flowing smoothly
o Tompkins: We have to do this with every budget, we have to fund students groups
I don’t think you need two dance groups and advertising to Ames
community
o Gallery: Last year we brought Aztec dancers but this year we want Omega dancers
which has a completely different history and dances more educational in the long
run
o Choi: This year they are asking for $2400, not much of a difference from last year.
Are both dancers from same company?
o Gallery: They are the same company but the groups are from two different places
o Choi: Not a big difference
o Gallery: Those aren’t there regular prices but they are very understanding and
generous with discounts
o Brown: I think we have a good finance committee, call a Question
Seconded.
Object.
o Maly: This is to refer to the advertisement and study the dancers-finance committee
has to look at budget again and then is referred back to Senate
o Hughes: Question called. Seconded.
Objection
Move on to vote, raise placquared.
23-6-0 now on a vote
o Vote Yes means to send it back to Finance Committee or vote No and continue
back to the bill
o 22-6-1, bill goes back to Finance Committee about advertisement and dancers
Senate Bill 2010-2-035 F: “Special Allocations- Skydivers”
o Stille: Skydivers and move to extend line items
o Hilgers: In what ways will this club help ISU?
o Gallery: Having a club well-funded by GSB will enhance the campus and make
ISU unique, we have increased membership
o Hilgers: What funding will you need in the future?
o Gallery: We will use this Special Allocations because our membership increased
from 1 member to 94 members and in the spring we will want about the same
o Hilgers: According to ISU website there are no dues paid
o Gallery: We realize that and our plan is to do fundraising to cover those fees and
semester dues
o Hilgers: Clarify because only $35 per student would cover this charge
o Gallery: The only thing that stops us from skydiving is the wind but the funding is
the cost in regards with skydiving, we want to provide the opportunity for everyone
without funding
o Maly: The group does have other things they are funding and will have to fundraise
for those
o Hughes: If members go on a trip, do you charge people?
o Gallery: No we don’t collect money, it is what ever the students pay
o Gallery: Most people are just trying it out, but try to do discounts with groups of
people
o Hughes: It seems like the perfect candidate for GSB to fund
o Knight: How many meetings this year and how many members at the meetings?
o Gallery: Almost every week at the beginning of semester but much less now, there
were over 100 people at first meetings and others were between 60-80 students,
meetings are done on campus usually in Carver
o Gallery: The official meetings are non-jumping but jumping is done daily
o Morrissey: More details on Spring Flying?
o Gallery: Basically the same as this fall, so organize a group of about 35 tandem
students and do a large group, so the fly in is to bring in a larger plane and to make
it more friendly
o Morrissey: I support this event as a student pilot
o Vander Velden: All students pay for fees to drop, just clarifying
o Gallery: $199 for first jump, and experienced divers is about $23 and so we want to
see more students go through certification process
o Brown: Love this idea and people are looking for crazy organizations to join, I
would consider at least $5 dues, all for this bill
o Voss: I move to pass the bill
Seconded.
Voting on bill as a whole.
Voting No is zero funding the group.
26-2-1 Bill Passes.
o Stille: Asking For bill 2010-2-032 Y to pull to table
o Stille: There must be certain positions that must be filled each year and it is the
responsibility of the President. So this bill is saying that the Director of
Sustainability become a permanent position.
o Knight: One of the goals of the university is to be sustainable, I encourage a yes
vote.
Questioned, Seconded
