                             We will also have Chief Kevin Sikes from the Dallas Fire Department who will
                             talk about the November Good Works Project to help install fire alarms in high
                             risk neighborhoods.

                                                   Service Project for the Dallas CPCU Chapter
                                                           Morning of Saturday, Nov 21
                                         Hi everyone. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates that
                                      about 22% of all homes in the U.S. do not have at least one operational smoke
                                      alarm. This means that in the city of Dallas alone, there are probably over
                                      600,000 homes without working smoke alarms, leading to more injuries and
                                      deaths due to fire. Most of these could be preventable if an operational fire alarm
                                      was in the home.
                                         For our service project this year, the Dallas chapter is teaming with the Dallas
                                      Fire Department to install smoke alarms in local neighborhoods whose residents
              are in need of these devices. (The neighborhoods chosen are ones in which Parkland Hospital has
              identified as having a high injury and death rate from house fires.) Each volunteer is teamed up with a
              fire fighter and spends the morning installing these alarms. I think this project would be a great com-
              munity service activity for our chapter, and it ties in so well with insurance and saving lives. What is
              interesting, according to my contact at the Dallas Fire Department, is that the recipients are often more
              thrilled to have someone to talk to while the alarms are being installed than getting the alarms them-
              selves. If we could get a group of 20 of us to participate, that would constitute the best size to work in
              conjunction with the fire department. If you want to bring a son or daughter (at least 10 years old) with
              you, he or she would be welcome to help. If you have an age 16+ son or daughter in need of commu-
              nity service hours for school, this would be another great opportunity to help. We can provide the nec-
              essary documentation. So we ask you to team up with your fellow CPCUs and volunteer for this worth-
              while community project on the morning of Saturday, November 21. To sign up, go to our online regis-

                  On another note, John Mullen, our President-Elect, has been working diligently at lining up an excit-
              ing slate of speakers for the 2009-2010 year. Our luncheon meeting this month is on Tuesday, Octo-
              ber 20, and it will feature Kimberly Yelkin, a partner with the law firm of Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP.
              Ms. Yelkin will be speaking about the latest 2009 Texas legislative session and will be making a pre-
              diction about the future of insurance regulation. To sign up for this 10-20 luncheon meeting, go to this
              link in our online registration form. In addition, we will have Chief Kevin Sipes with the Dallas Fire
              Department make a few brief comments on our November service project.
                  After the meeting, Edwin Wells, our chairperson for the education and scholarship committee, will
              teach a 2-hour CE approved class (1:15 pm to 3:15) on employment practices liability exposures. This
              program will cover the background on the evolution of this exposure, the need for coverage, loss pre-
              vention techniques, review of the coverage form, and a case study analysis. To sign up, go to this

                  And, lastly, don’t forget about the upcoming I-Day event at the Hilton Anatole on Tuesday, Novem-
              ber 24th. The theme will be a sports-centered one with Dale Hanson from WFAA television as our key-
