Trinity School
December 2008
Dear Parents and Carers
The Chair of Governors says that there were a lot of words in the last letter …well, call me old
fashioned but …
However, here is a shorter more usual version of the monthly newsletter.
Shorter, but with big news …
Trinity School announces rebuilding scheme
We have done this before but now we can do it properly. Our preferred bidder for the work is Border
Construction and we are really delighted that a local company with the community of Carlisle at its
heart is the one chosen to work with us to bring the project about.
There is coverage of this announcement in the Press, and we think that it is splendid news all round,
and we hope that you do as well. We have held a brief meeting with the parents and carers who came
to the initial meeting all those months ago, and we shall be inviting you to meet the contractors and
see the plans in the New Year. There are many aspects of the scheme about which we also hope that
you will have an input, along with the staff and the students too.
Work begins we hope in April or May 2009 and runs for two years at least. Worth my saying again that
we shall not be moving any students off site during this project, and that we shall be able to see
incremental change to the school as a new block is built, and then we move in while an older part of
the school is demolished or entirely refurbished.
These are exciting days for the school and we are very grateful for the partnership with the Local
Authority with the Diocese of Carlisle with Capita and for the full support of the governors and the
Foundation in overcoming the obstacles to bring us to this point. Of course, we are not there yet, but
significant steps have at last been taken to set the project up and away.
All good wishes for Christmas, the holidays and the New Year.
Yours sincerely
Alan Mottershead

END OF TERM
th
Note the seamless link here …the term ends on Friday 19 December and as we usually do we
shall finish at 12.30pm, which students and families and staff like for a quick get away …if any of us

STAFF CHANGES
Two members of staff will be leaving us at the end of this term. Miss Hayes, who has taught Science
since September leaves to fulfil her career ambition of working in education publishing, and Mr.
Whelpdale, Year 7 Tutor and Teacher of PE, and of French, and organiser of the Friends of Trinity,
and so much else besides, retires (but only partly for now!) We thank them both for their service to the
school and wish them both well for the future.

40 Anniversary Cathedral Concert
Thank you to all who supported the concert in the cathedral – it was superb. Congratulations to all
involved and especially to Alison Richardson for the organisation of everything behind the scenes.
‘The Real Inspector Hound’
Thank you also for parents and staff and students who supported the Trinity Arts and Theatre
Company Staff Players’ production of the Tom Stoppard comedy thriller, which was great fun. Well
done to all and to Ms Southwell for producing the play.
Art
Congratulations to Jessica Robinson who won second prize in the Rotary Club Photography
competition, which had the theme 'Make Dreams Real'. The photograph has now entered into the
National Competition as one of three entries from Carlisle.
With Mrs Stead in Room 144, starting on Tuesday 13th January from 3.30 to 4.15 pm for 5
weeks. You will be using stencils, spray paints etc. to produce an exciting mural for display in
school. This should be a fun after school club learning new art skills, producing urban art in
the style of Banksy. Students should see Mrs Stead to collect a permission letter to take home.
All Year groups welcome.
FUTURE EVENTS
Year 7 Trip to Dumfries Ice Bowl
rd
Year 7 students are invited to Dumfries Ice Bowl on either Friday 23 or Friday 30th January 2009. A

hesitate to contact Mrs Wylie or Mr Whelpdale.
Year 11 Mock Exams
These have been taking place as usual during the closing fortnight of school. It is something we are all
pleased to get out of the way before the Christmas holidays. Once again, our Year 11 students have
done very well this year, taking their work seriously and working hard in revision and during the exams
th
themselves. We are holding a ‘Mocks Exam Results day’ on Friday 9 January, so that they will find
out how well they have done (so far) in a formal way.
Charity Events
Margaret Sewell Reception staff held a lost property sale in aid of Children in Need, they also sold
'Pudsey scratch cards' to staff and friends and raised a total of £231.36.

ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION
We aim to reduce the amount of paper copies circulated in and out of school and in the future plan to
move much more towards electronic communication. We are not quite ready to do this on a large
scale, as yet, but would like to begin the process. If, as a parent or carer you are willing to view
the copy of our monthly Newsletter via our website, in place of receiving a paper copy, and if
you haven’t already done so, can you kindly complete and return the reply slip below. The
Newsletter is produced and available to view on our website every second Friday each month.

ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION
I no longer wish to receive a paper copy of the Newsletter to parents/carers and will view the
Newsletter via the school’s website.

Dear Parent/Carer
Re: Ski/Snowboard Trip 2010
Trinity School is organising a Ski/Snowboard Trip to take 42 students from Year 8 to 10
(present year 7, 8 & 9) to Interlaken in Switzerland for the February half term 2010 (12 to 20
February). The trip is aimed at both beginners and more advanced skiers and snowboarders
and will be booked with a reputable company, Skiing Europe (www.skiing-europe.com),
which specialises in school parties. We plan to travel by coach from the school gates on
Friday 12 February 2010 and arrive by afternoon on the Saturday. Final details of travel
etc. will be given once I know exact numbers of students wishing to participate.
The total cost of the trip is expected to be £700 per student. This includes:
Return coach from Carlisle to Interlaken.
Full medical and travel insurance
7 nights’ full board accommodation (drinks with meals other than breakfast are not
included)
Lift pass for 6 full days
6 day hire of skis/snowboard, boots and poles
Ski/snowboard tuition of 4 hours per day : the tuition will be tailored to each
skier’s/boarder’s ability
Resort Representative service
N.B. Please note that, because of smaller tuition groups, snowboarding lessons will
cost an extra £40 for the week on top of the total cost.
We anticipate a programme of evening activities which could include swimming, bowling, ice-
skating etc. This will be finalised when numbers are known.
The idea of this letter is to give you advance notice of our plans. If you would like to register
your interest please email ski@trinity.cumbria.sch.uk or telephone Joanne Dickinson on:
01228 403562 with your name, child’s name, form group, address and contact number. At
this stage, we are gauging interest in the proposed trip. We will contact you again in the New
Year when we will be asking for a deposit to secure your child’s place.
Please note that it is the policy of the school to allow on trips only students
who display appropriate behaviour in school.
Yours sincerely
