Abstract of Thesis Proposal Seminar
Stakeholder pressure as an antecedent to corporate environmental
responsibility – case of mining firms
By Sumita Sindhi
Abstract
Organization is a system of primary stakeholder groups and its survival and success depends on
the capacity to create value for these stakeholders by satisfying their demands and expectations.
In this context stakeholder pressure is distinguished as a central determinant factor for corporate
environmental responsibility and it is argued that all the other variables affect either the intensity
of this pressure or the company’s capacity to perceive it. Therefore, the basic question is ‘How
stakeholder pressure influences organizations to be environmentally responsible?’ The research
will focus on the influence of stakeholder pressure on mining companies in Orissa. A basic
theoretical framework is developed, applying institutional theory and stakeholder theory. Case
study methodology will be used to study in-depth relation between stakeholder pressure and
adoption of environmental responsibilities. The proposal delineates the research question,
research objectives and research design. Finally the significance and limitations of the study will
be discussed.
