Measuring Biodiversity
Part 1: Use the following website to answer the questions below regarding sampling and
measuring biodiversity.
http://www.countrysideinfo.co.uk/biol_sampl_cont.htm
1. What is the purpose of sampling?
2. How do stratified and random sampling techniques differ?
3. What is the difference between line and belt sampling?
4. Looking at the Simpsons Index, What two factors does this take into account?
5. What are the different ways data can be reported using Simpson’s index. Why is it
important to know exactly what index is being reported?
Part 2 Design a biodiversity study of the plant life North and South Banks of the Community
Park Marsh?
Create a clear purpose, hypothesis, and procedure for the experiment.
Include the sampling techniques to be used, with a diagram clearly designating
the sampling areas. (use google maps for pictures)
Include Data Tables and formulas to be used with the Simpson Diversity Index
Part 3: Indentify any threatened or endangered species that maybe present in our park area.
