MATTERS PRESENTED BY STAFF
Director’s Report
Melinda reported that over 4,200 more items were checked out in February 2010 from last
February. The visitor count has been incorrect because it was discovered that the gate counter
at the front entrance was not functioning properly. It has since been repaired by 3M company.
The Battle of the Books program held this past Saturday at Lakeview Elementary School was a
tremendous success. There were 60 teams with a total of 542 in attendance. Special thanks go
out to Julie Zeoli from Young Adult Services and Vickie Powell from Children’s Services for
an outstanding job of organizing this event.
The Welcome Baby program had a total of 85 people in attendance; however a large number of
these were parents and siblings of the infants. There might be some changes to this program for
next year due to the staff time involved in planning this event.
Melinda gave the Commissioners the new Spring Activity Guide for March, April and May.
The Commissioners were shown the preliminary brochure to be mailed to Yorba Linda
residents for National Library Week which begins April 11th. This brochure is a campaign tool
to make people aware of the services the Library has to offer. It will include a tear off portion
to be filled out and brought back to the Library for a chance to win a gift card from Trader
Joe’s. On the opposite side of that tear off will be a Library quiz with five questions asking
interesting questions about the Library. The Commissioners offered their suggestions on the
questions, and Melinda will finalize them. The mailer also offers a free DVD rental to any
person with a library card.
There might be a Grant opportunity for the library entitled “Transforming Life After 50”. Adult
Librarian Lynn Baden will be working on this application.
The Teen Film Festival will be held on Friday, March 5th at the Nixon Library at 6:30 p.m. This
year there were 33 entries from the teens which include animation, commercials, public service
announcements and documentaries. Last year’s event brought in 14 entries.
The Town Hall Meeting was held on February 9th. Melinda thanked Lori Katz and Carin
Benner for being there to represent the library.
There was an Environmental Impact Report meeting last night. Randie Noell reported that her
husband attended the meeting and said it was very positive regarding the Library. He said
several people got up to say that parking at the library is a huge issue.
The City Manager gave Melinda approval to go ahead with the request for a building program.
She will present the plan at the March 16th City Council meting. She estimates the cost for the
program to be anywhere from $15,000 to $37,000 depending on the amount of community
input.
In a conversation with Dave Christiansen, he stated that it’s possible to finance $21,000,000 to
$25,000,000 without the need for a tax assessment.
Presentation by Diane Standefer
Diane gave the Commissioners an Excel spreadsheet, along with a graph chart showing the
total number of circulated items by month and year from 1995 to the present time.
Anna Mollindo showed the Commissioners a new capability of the Iphone. The new
technology from AT&T has the option to upload barcodes from. The Library will allow patrons
to upload their library barcode and use at the circulation desk when checking out items, in place
of using their library card.
