First Quarter Book Project
Name___________________________________
After finishing a self-selected fictional book, you will design a cereal box that presents
information about the story in a fun, creative format. Construction paper will be provided at school, but
students will be required to supply the cereal box and additional materials.
1. Choose a name for your cereal that sounds enticing and that relates to the story in some
way. Then, choose a shape for the cereal, as well as colors that also relate to the book. For
example, for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, you might invent a cereal called Wizard
Wands, a toasted oat cereal in the shape of miniature lightning bolts.
2. Cover an empty cereal box with colored paper or you may want to write and draw on
appropriately-sized sheets of paper and then glue them onto the box. Write a rough draft
and draw sketches before moving on to your final copy.
3. The guidelines for each part of the cereal box are as follows:
Front
Write the name of your cereal and draw a picture to go with it. You might draw characters or
other pictures to help sell your product. Make your cereal box look appealing and fun. Look at
actual cereal boxes for ideas.
Back
Pick up the pattern of the crystal ball from your teacher. Consider what big event might happen
next. Draw and color a picture of your prediction in the crystal ball. Then write a paragraph
describing your prediction on the lines provided. Cut out the crystal ball and glue it onto your
cereal box.
Right Side
Under the heading “Ingredients,” list the main characters, and write a sentence about each one.
Next, describe the setting (time and place). Remember to use language that sounds appealing,
as if you were trying to advertise the book. Then, list a word that you were able to understand
because you looked it up in the dictionary or the definition was stated within the text. Write the
word and the definition. Finally, write a word that you were able to understand because you
used a synonym/antonym to determine its meaning. Write the word and the
synonym/antonym.
Left Side
Write a summary of the book. Describe the main conflict and the resolution (the main problem
and how it was solved).
Top
Write the title and author of the book and your name.
