MIDDLESEX JAZZ ENSEMBLE AUDITION INFORMATION

The types of instruments that make up the instruments of the jazz ensemble are different from that of the

concert band. Instruments such as flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn are typically not part of the

traditional jazz ensemble. Students who play these instruments will be encouraged to audition on an instrument

more suited for the group. Rhythm section instrument such as piano, guitar, bass, or drum set, which are vital

instruments of the jazz ensemble are also part of the traditional jazz ensemble. Preference will be given to

students who currently perform in band or orchestra. Exceptions to this will be permitted only for

rhythm section positions such as piano, guitar, or bass only.

An important difference between concert band and jazz ensemble is that jazz music is written specifically for

fewer instruments, thus the group is smaller in size. Listed below are the number of instruments found in a

traditional jazz ensemble and the maximum number of instruments that will be accepted before compromising

the quality of the student’s musical experience:

Traditional Jazz Ensemble Middlesex Jazz Ensemble (up to, but not exceeding)

5 saxophones (2 altos, 2 tenors, 1 bari) 7 saxophones (4 altos, 2 tenors, 1 baritone)

4 trumpets 5 trumpets (double lead)

4 trombones 4 low brass

1 piano 1 or 2 pianos (alternating turns)

1 guitar 1 guitar

1 bass 1 bass (upright or electric)

1 drum set 1 drum set

17 total musicians 20 total musicians

Due to the fact that our size is limited, all students interested in performing with the group need to audition.

This includes previous members. The audition process is as follows:

All students need to:

 Bring his or her signed permission slip to the audition

 Perform a short jazz arrangement (one that has been selected for you)(bring the music)

 Perform the music designated for your particular instrument (downloadable forms)

 Sight read a brief selection

 Play a concert Bb blues with a straight and swing feel, and selected excerpts (downloadable

forms)

 *Percussionists only* will prepare various drum patterns including swing, jazz waltz, funk, rock,

bossa nova, etc. with fills in addition to selected excerpts .

 *Guitarists must be able to read and voice jazz chords, melody lines, and create accompaniment

patterns based on various music styles(swing, waltz, funk, rock, and Latin). Most songs are not

written for TAB only players.

Make sure to sign up for your audition date and time on the JAZZ ENSEMBLE AUDITION sheet located in the

music office. Write down your audition date and time and come prepared. Do not ask Mr. Carter for help

during your audition. He will gladly help students who ask well in advance of their audition date. All auditions

will be video taped for the sole purpose of reviewing and evaluating each individual’s performance and will not

be broadcasted to the general public.

Thank you in advance for your interest and good luck!!!

Mr. Carter
