MIDDLESEX JAZZ ENSEMBLE AUDITION INFORMATION
The types of instruments that make up the instruments of the jazz ensemble are different from that of the
concert band. Instruments such as flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn are typically not part of the
traditional jazz ensemble. Students who play these instruments will be encouraged to audition on an instrument
more suited for the group. Rhythm section instrument such as piano, guitar, bass, or drum set, which are vital
instruments of the jazz ensemble are also part of the traditional jazz ensemble. Preference will be given to
students who currently perform in band or orchestra. Exceptions to this will be permitted only for
rhythm section positions such as piano, guitar, or bass only.
An important difference between concert band and jazz ensemble is that jazz music is written specifically for
fewer instruments, thus the group is smaller in size. Listed below are the number of instruments found in a
traditional jazz ensemble and the maximum number of instruments that will be accepted before compromising
the quality of the student’s musical experience:

Due to the fact that our size is limited, all students interested in performing with the group need to audition.
This includes previous members. The audition process is as follows:
All students need to:
Bring his or her signed permission slip to the audition
Perform a short jazz arrangement (one that has been selected for you)(bring the music)
Perform the music designated for your particular instrument (downloadable forms)
Sight read a brief selection
Play a concert Bb blues with a straight and swing feel, and selected excerpts (downloadable
forms)
*Percussionists only* will prepare various drum patterns including swing, jazz waltz, funk, rock,
bossa nova, etc. with fills in addition to selected excerpts .
*Guitarists must be able to read and voice jazz chords, melody lines, and create accompaniment
patterns based on various music styles(swing, waltz, funk, rock, and Latin). Most songs are not
written for TAB only players.
Make sure to sign up for your audition date and time on the JAZZ ENSEMBLE AUDITION sheet located in the
music office. Write down your audition date and time and come prepared. Do not ask Mr. Carter for help
during your audition. He will gladly help students who ask well in advance of their audition date. All auditions
will be video taped for the sole purpose of reviewing and evaluating each individual’s performance and will not
be broadcasted to the general public.
