Theatre Foundations II

Instructor, Melanie Durfee

Rules: The drama students will be expected to abide by all Cedar High School policies and

rules. Keep all cell phones out of sight (unless calendaring as directed by instructor).

Theatre Dress Code: Not only do students need to abide by Cedar High’s dress code, but they

also need to abide by the theatre dress code:

 comfortable clothing in which one can roll around on the floor (save pretty dresses for

B days)

 hair out of face

 close-toed shoes at all times (save pretty high heels for B days)—no flip flops

 distracting makeup

On Time: Each student is expected to come on time to class every day, prepared with paper

and a writing utensil. If a student is unprepared for class (no supplies or needs to use the

restroom), then the student can exchange a tardy for the hall pass. On time students will

receive bell work points. Late students will not.

Drama Club: Drama students are encouraged to join Cedar High Drama Club ($10). The

Drama Club will perform at Cedar High assemblies, attend other schools’ theatre productions

as well as perform service for the school and community.

Food and Gum: Food distracts and gum keeps one from speaking clearly. Avoid both in class.

Make-Up Work: Students who are absent can see what they missed by checking class web

site. Also, students are encouraged to attend as many local theater and fine art events as

possible. When student need to miss class for an excused absence, they can submit a theater

review to make up the points. If extenuating circumstances require students to miss more

class than available shows to see, students should arrange with me for a special project.

Mission Statement. This course will reinforce the mission of Cedar High, to cultivate

responsible citizens through lifelong learning and community involvement. Specifically, this

class will prepare students to problem solve, communicate effectively and make connections

to other areas of discipline.

Class Description: Students in this course will find meaning in works of theatre art through

the study and appreciation of theatre as an art form and constructing meaning in works of

theatre art through the study and skill development of theatre techniques in the creation of

that theatre art. To these concepts this course adds depth as well as breadth through the

study of production unity, character conflict, character motivation through movement and

voice, projecting mood and feelings, trust, the design concepts of visualization and

technology, researching a script, variety in art forms, assessing performance effectiveness, and

famous theatre professionals. The prerequisite for this course is Foundations II.
